The verdict: The 2024 Nissan Sentra has a couple of things going for it — chiefly that it’s cheap. The compact sedan earned the third spot on Cars.com’s affordability list, with a decent list of standard features, no-nonsense controls and inoffensive road manners.

Versus the competition: While it’s among the most affordable options in its class, competitors have more driving personality, better fuel economy and alternative powertrain options.

For 2024, the Sentra got some updates, including a reworked continuously variable automatic transmission and standard stop-start functionality, along with slightly revised styling. See it compared with the 2023 version.

With the automotive market’s continued phasing out of sedans, the Sentra competes in a shrinking compact sedan class. It goes up against the likes of the Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Corolla; see the models compared.

Driving: It Does It

I tested the top SR version, which adds dark-chrome exterior trim, a rear spoiler, racy red “SR” badging, 18-inch alloy wheels and two-tone paint (buyers can choose a black roof paired with a white, dark gray, blue or orange body). The SR’s extras add some sportiness, but it’s racy only in Nissan’s dreams. Power comes from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 149 horsepower, and responsiveness is just OK. It never feels lively, but the Sentra does manage merges and quick lane changes with minimal struggle.

For 2024, Nissan says the Sentra’s CVT has been retooled for decreased fuel consumption and “smoother shift patterns.” It still sounds grouchy when pushed, but it has mellowed out. As with many CVTs, the powertrain’s groans are always present, but they’re now tempered by artificial gearlike steps that simulate the sound and feel of a traditional automatic. The result is a more natural acceleration experience, but you still get some of the rubber-band feel, as well as the droning sound, of a CVT.

The payoff for that awkwardness is a bit of extra fuel efficiency. A base 2024 Sentra is EPA-rated 30/40/34 mpg city/highway/combined; the SR trim knocks that down to 30/38/33 mpg. Those numbers are a smidge higher than the 2023 Sentra’s 29/39/33 mpg rating. Also new for 2024 is an idle stop-start feature that should also save a bit of fuel, but it’s an unrefined and shuddery-feeling system.

Even so, the Sentra’s numbers are lower than those of some competitors: The base 2024 Civic sedan is rated 31/40/35 mpg, the base Elantra is rated 32/41/36 mpg, and the base Corolla is rated 32/41/35 mpg. Those models also offer more efficient hybrid versions, which the Sentra does not.

While the CVT is memorable (and not in the best way), the rest of the Sentra’s road manners are forgettable — in the best way.  You won’t find driving fun here, but the Sentra does what it should: Bumps are decently damped, it’s fairly well isolated from noise, and it’s predictably maneuverable for its compact size. Thrill-seekers should check out the Honda Civic and its sporty Si and performance-oriented Type-R versions, or a Hyundai Elantra N sport sedan.

Controls: They Work

The Sentra’s cabin has a clean look and functional design, and despite its low price and copious amounts of plastic, nothing feels too chintzy. My SR trim added some pizazz to the Sentra’s otherwise black palette with red-and-orange contrast stitching on the seats and dash.

Base models come with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; SV and SR variants get an 8-inch touchscreen. Here again, everything works as it should. The screen is adequately sized, touch response time is quick, and the learning curve to figure it out is basically flat. What’s more, the two large tuning and volume knobs that flank the screen, and the straightforward climate controls under it, couldn’t be any clearer.

There’s not much by way of extras. The line-topping SR trim gets heated front seats and remote engine start, and a heated steering wheel is available on the middle SV and SR trims. The Sentra SR I tested was equipped with a $2,490 SR Premium Package that added a power moonroof, premium eight-speaker Bose stereo and power-adjustable driver’s seat. Other available features are pretty basic, including up to three USB ports, rear-seat cupholders and a storage pocket in the passenger seatback.

In the backseat, I struggled to install car seats for a couple of reasons. With just 35 inches of max rear legroom, the Sentra matches the Corolla but trails the Civic and Elantra by a couple of inches; rear-facing car seats took up a lot of space and impacted the front passenger’s legroom. Neither a forward-facing convertible car seat nor a booster fit well due to the Sentra SR’s fixed head restraints, which prevented the car seats from sitting flush against the seatback, as they should. In terms of trunk space, the Sentra is mid-pack with competitors. According to the manufacturer’s numbers, the trunk has 14.3 cubic feet of space, which matches the Elantra and bests the Corolla; the 2024 Civic has slightly more space. What’s nice in the Sentra, however, is its unexpectedly huge center console. Other small-items storage spaces are pretty compact-car typical.

Safety and Value: A Lot for a Little

The Sentra comes well equipped in terms of standard safety features but again doesn’t stand out from its competition. Nissan’s Safety Shield 360 suite is standard, bundling automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and automatic high-beam headlights. Adaptive cruise control and a 360-degree camera system are available.

The 2024 Sentra starts at $22,320, which is less than base 2024 versions of the Honda Civic ($25,045), Hyundai Elantra ($22,775) and Toyota Corolla ($23,145). My test vehicle was priced at $29,320. (All prices include destination.)

The 2024 Nissan Sentra may be one of the cheapest new cars you can buy today and the compact sedan earned third place on Cars.com’s affordability list, but that doesn’t mean it’s crummy. The Sentra is an affordable, practical compact sedan with straightforward controls and decent trunk space. If your bottom dollar is your bottom line, take a close look at it; if personality and fuel efficiency are higher priorities, other options in the compact sedan class might be a better fit.

    Love my 2024 Nissan Sentra sv I hit my hear mark with my baby I call her “Diamond” lol she’s great with mileage/gas and is comfortable for me and my daughter and visiting family in California I have no plans On trading her love the space inside and smoothness when driving Siri play “isn’t she lovely” lol I definitely recommend

  • I recently purchased a 2024 Sentra SV with the premium

    I recently purchased a 2024 Sentra SV with the premium package. I also currently own a 2020 Sentra SV (no upgraded package). I've owned that one for 4 years with 80k miles on it now. Great, reliable car. Very comfortable seats, great gas mileage, very good standard stereo system. I love the layout of everything for HVAC controls and radio. The dash display with speed limit sign recognition is great as well. I have had zero problems with the 2020 Sentra (I'm passing that car along to my daughter so not getting rid of it). For the 2024, the only notable differences are the transmission (it was upgraded in 2024) and the stereo controls. The transmission seems more responsive now in keeping rpms low without losing any acceleration. Very quiet car without the whining on the CVT. (there is some but not bad). The stereo on the premium package includes Bose speakers. I was hoping they would be a great upgrade but noticed no real improvement; maybe even slightly worse than the standard setup. In my 2020 Sentra, there is a sound adjustment for the midrange and a bass enhancer you can turn on/off. The new one does not have these selections. It sounds like too much midrange so kind of distorted and not crisp like I expect the Bose to be. Other than that, the car performs the same. It's a perfect reliable commuter car with enough features to keep you happy and comfortable on long drives. I have no issue with pickup or highway driving. I highly recommend.

  • Got a 2024 SV, Aspen White Tri Coat ($400 option) all

    Got a 2024 SV, Aspen White Tri Coat ($400 option) all weather package (heated seats, heated leather wrapped steering wheel,heated mirrors, remote start, dual zone climate control, $590 option) proximity keyless entry and keyless start....for $20443. It's a freaking bargain! The interior is well laid out and comfortable even for me and I'm 6'5'. Everything is easy to access and understand and there's better soft touch materials everywhere they should be. Stereo is a pretty basic 6 speaker system with tweeters in the A pillars, 2 front door speakers and 2 rear deck speakers. Took about 2 weeks for the speakers to break in and deliver better sounding bass that's smoother. Clarity is pretty remarkable for a standard factory system. Performance wise...well it's a 149hp and weighs 3000lbs with a cvt. It's not winning many races but it's absolutely fine for any situation. You can easily pass cars and the cvt keeps the revs low on the interstate so your fuel economy doesn't suffer so much at higher speeds. Speaking of fuel economy,this thing won't get less than 40mpg. If I baby it in ecomode I've seen as high as 48mpg on my 24 mile commute to work. Running 50/50 rural roads and interstate I've gotten as much as 46mpg hand calculated (that's keeping the ac off and really trying for the best mpg I can get) normally though my tanks average 40-42mpg. The on board mpg readout is pretty darn accurate too. As far as saftey features, the blind spot monitoring has been perfect, rear back up automatic braking works well and the backup sensors let you know when you're getting close to stuff. Rear cross traffic alert works great too. I ALWAYS turn off automatic emergency braking for the front. Those systems are notorious for being overly cautious and intervening when not needed. We have the same type of system in our tractor trailers at work and they do more harm than good. Overall I'd highly recommend buying a Sentra. It's quiet, comfortable, handles better than it has a right to. Looks great and is cheap to own. The cvt for 2024 is a Jatco CVT XS. Look it up, it's meant to take way more power than a Sentra makes. Has a twin oil pump to keep pressures up and reduce slipping to reduce heat and wear. Has a multiplate clutch system for better lockup and again less slippage and it adds auto start stop which operates near seamlessly. Disregard the silly review complaining about the auto start stop system, there's a button to turn it off....its not the car's fault that person didn't read the owners manual. I'm not worried about reliability. Sentras rate a 4 out of 5 for reliability by warranty companies and companies that monitor repairs industry wide. They also have had and are projected to have less than average repair costs than other cars in the segment. Realistically a civic and corolla may be more reliable but you will never find one with this many options for less than $6000 more. Besides, if you're tall you definitely don't want a civic or corolla. They're ugly too lol. A base model corolla still has a torsion beam rear suspension while the Sentras get multi link independent rear suspensions and 2 sway bars. Sentras handle flat and active trace control keeps them from understeering in turns when pushed hard and trust me it works. Go drive one, you'll like it. Extended warranties are cheaper for these than most American brands. Throw a warranty on it and it's still cheaper to buy a loaded Sentra than a base civic or corolla. I wouldn't even consider a Hyundai/Kia with all the engine and transmission failures they're having now. Shop around and absolutely do not pay msrp. Prices are dropping and patience will pay off.

    Bought my son a new car at Rt.23 Nissan. Unreal experience from start to finish. Ezaz was outstanding!! Made sure we were comfortable while waiting for finance, was kind and courteous.   • 2024 Sentra SV with All Weather Package

    Bought the 2024 SV model. Black interior and exterior. All weather package included. Remote start is very nice. Heated seats and heated steering wheel work well. Passenger and driver can individually control the heat/air conditioner for their side of the car, which is nice. Front floor mats have hooks to keep them in place. Center console has a huge storage compartment. The blind spot warning light and the vibrating steering wheel when you drift from your lane are helpful. 4 wheel disc brakes are included. 6 speaker stereo with free 3 month trial Sirius Radio is included. Corded Apple Car Play works great. USB A and USB C compatible. USB A charge port for rear seat passengers as well. I think as long as you don’t try to drive like a race car driver, and perform scheduled maintenance, this will perform well for many years. The idle start/stop function can be overridden, thank goodness, because I get better gas mileage when I have that turned off. I push the ECO button on as well, and have gotten up to 39 mpg so far. And if you are like me and don’t want to hear the obnoxiously loud car honk when you lock it, you can program your remote to override that too! This car is quiet and has a good ride for the price point. I paid about 24,900. This includes some dealer add-ons like lifetime powertrain warranty.

  • Auto start/stop feature is not good.

    To our surprise, the car came with a feature that we do not like, which is the Auto start/stop. This feature was not listed in the sticker nor in the website. Nissan does not provide a way to disable it permanently, which makes matters worse as we feel that the company is forcing us to use it. We certainly would like to be able to choose and to be forced into a feature.
