2024 Toyota Corolla review: Our expert's take

What Is the 2024 Toyota Corolla?

The Toyota Corolla is available as a compact sedan or four-door hatchback. A 169-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder is standard, and it sends power to the front wheels via a continuously variable automatic transmission. Performance is fine for routine driving needs, though rivals like the Honda Civic and Mazda3 feel livelier behind the wheel. A fuel-sipping hybrid version is available, returning up to an EPA-estimated 50 mpg in combined city/highway driving. The Corolla Hybrid is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder that’s paired with an electric motor for a total output of 138 hp. It offers a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, in which case it gets a second electric motor to power the rear wheels.

This sensible Toyota economy car also has a seriously wild side in the form of a high-performance, racetrack-tuned GR Corolla hatchback. Motivated by a 300-hp, turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder, it comes solely with AWD and a six-speed manual transmission along with a performance-tuned suspension and exclusive body-styling touches.

What’s New on the 2024 Toyota Corolla?

The Nightshade Edition returns to the Corolla lineup for the 2024 model year. This special-appearance trim adds blacked out exterior badging and bronze-colored alloy wheels to the sedan. When ordered on the Corolla hatchback, it also includes a black roof and an available vented sport wing mounted on the roof. Meanwhile, the hot-rod GR Corolla gains a mid-level Premium trim that slots between the base Core and line-topping Circuit trims.

What Features in the 2024 Toyota Corolla Are Most Important?

Standard features include:

  • 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Satellite radio
  • Wi-Fi hot spot
  • Four USB ports
  • Automatic climate control
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane departure steering assist
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Traffic-sign recognition
  • Automatic high-beam headlights

Available features include:

  • Alloy wheels
  • Push-button start
  • Power moonroof
  • Heated front seats
  • Wireless device charging
  • JBL premium stereo
  • Navigation
  • Blind spot warning
  • Rear cross-traffic alert

Should I Buy the 2024 Toyota Corolla?

In its standard sedan form, the Corolla is a sensible, no-nonsense choice for anyone who simply wants affordable, economical transportation. Don’t assume the Corolla is bare-bones, however — even the entry-level trim comes with a solid range of safety and tech features. The hybrid is the mileage champ in the lineup, and the raucous GR Corolla is an absolute blast to drive if you’re willing to pay its significantly higher price tag and tolerate its stiffer ride. This wide variety makes the Corolla a highly adaptable pick for all kinds of driving needs and all kinds of budgets.
