Expert 2005 Volkswagen Passat review

Vehicle Overview
Volkswagen’s midsize sedan and wagon went on sale as freshened 2001.5 models. A TDI turbo-diesel engine became available during the 2004 model year.

For 2005, Volkswagen has dropped the costly Passat W8 model. Leatherette seating surfaces replace cloth in the GL and GLS models, and the GLS gets heated front seats as standard equipment. The Passat is available with either front- or all-wheel drive. A redesigned Passat is expected for 2006.
(Skip to details on the: Passat Wagon)

Exterior
Body-colored bumpers have a black lower section, and the sharply raked black grille contains a pronounced center logo. Halogen projector-lens fog lamps are integrated into the front bumper.

Helped by a space-saving hinge, the sedan has 15 cubic feet of trunk capacity; space decreases in sedans with all-wheel drive. Steel wheels on GL models hold 15-inch tires, but the GLS now has standard 16-inch tires and the GLX moves to standard 17-inch alloy wheels.

Interior
Up to five occupants fit inside the Passat. Reclining bucket seats are installed up front, and a 60/40-split folding bench seat goes in the back. The gauges have brushed-aluminum accents and the familiar Volkswagen blue lighting at night.

Under the Hood
The Passat can be equipped with either a 170-horsepower, turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder; a 190-hp, 2.8-liter V-6; or a turbo-diesel 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 134 hp and 247 pounds-feet of torque. The turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder can be equipped with either a five-speed-manual transmission or a five-speed Tiptronic automatic that permits manually selected gear changes, but all other engines are available only with the automatic.

Safety
Six airbags, including two for front-seat side-impact protection and two side curtain-type airbags, are standard. All-disc antilock brakes, daytime running lights and child-safety seat tether anchorage points for rear outboard seating positions are standard.

Driving Impressions
Volkswagen’s Passat is one of the smoothest-riding sedans in its league. The suspension is taut, but it absorbs moderate bumps handily with no sense of overreaction.

The exceptionally quiet V-6 delivers more than ample acceleration. Automatic-transmission response is crisp and positive. Volkswagen’s turbocharged four-cylinder is coarser during hard acceleration and isn’t especially powerful at lower speeds; but otherwise, it’s as energetic as many V-6s.

The Passat steers with moderate effort and excellent precision, but at times it’s a trifle slow to respond. It displays minimal body lean in curves. Every element of assembly comes across as A-1.

Because Volkswagen has used diesel engines for years in its smaller Jetta, one would expect the Passat diesel to be wholly satisfying; sadly, that’s not the case. Performance is acceptable, if tame. You can clearly hear the diesel-engine sound when a window is open. More important, the diesel-engine powertrain in two early Passats stumbled periodically.

Passat Wagon
In wagon form, the Passat differs little from its sedan counterpart. Cargo capacity is 39 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 56.5 cubic feet with that seat folded down. All-wheel-drive wagons have slightly less cargo volume. Back to top

  • Already broke down.

I like the leather interior. A little outdated, but it is an 05'. Engine issues, so not as reliable as I thought it would be. Already in the shop and the mechanic says I may need a new engine after 130K miles.

  • Best value and love the classic look

We have owned a few of these Passats from the 2001 -2005 body style. If you take care of it and wash it during the winter these cars do not rust. Very comfortable interior and I love how it drives. I have the V6 engine and I been told by many that the engine is bulletproof, but you do have to follow the service schedule. Some repairs are expensive, but long term it's worth it. I have the 4 motion 2005 model and it handles beautifully in the winter. We also still have 2003 v6 GLX and it's running great. I plan on getting another 2005 GLX if I can find a low mileage one. They are reasonable pricewise and last forever.

  • Most dependable and efficient vehicle I have owned

Car drives like new thanks to Shocks and Struts being replaced so recently. Great ride! Dependable, and Efficient gets about 33 to 42 miles per gallon on diesel.

  • I still love mine!

I love the comfort of this car it was very well made and solid. I purchased it in 06 with about 25k on it for commuting 120 miles a day. I sold my Honda Civic because it felt so cheap, the seats were hard and I could hardly keep it on the road on a windy day. I had the glow plugs replaced on recall about 10 years ago. Two months ago the car started a little slow and I googled battery problems and ran across a article that my recalled glow plugs were recalled but that it had expired. I contacted a new dealership in Grand Junction Co and the service manager agreed to replace them for free. Other than that, the only problem is that the door locks are starting to act up, you never know if they will work so you have to check them, it locked me out twice when the key was in the ignition so I carry a spare now. Overall I still love this car and now have 245k on it . I can drive from Co to Idaho on a tank of gas which makes me feel safer when traveling alone without my husband. I will keep it till one of us dies.

  • Solid Car

I purchased this 2005 Passat GLX just before they changed the body style and have owned it through 235k miles. It is a solid car. It still drives smoothly. As with all VW, the only issue I have is you are better off taking it to the dealership (or someone who specialized in VW) for service, or you will be sorry. It is not high maintenance, but when needed you need to just bite the bullet. That said, I would highly recommend and have just purchased another Passat...and still held onto the 2005.

  • Most Comfortable Vehicle I've Owned

I absolutely love my new (to me) Passat. It has black leather seats, which are heated, and have electronic control. There's a new stereo and sound system (which the seller provided all instructions and boxing for me as well). The car is gently used, only from commuting to work, so there are little to any interior details that are not perfect. For performance, this car is so smooth on the road! Sometimes I sense that first and second gear are worn from the Northern Virginia traffic commute but the car does not hesitate after third gear! Minor scratches on the exterior; however the car is looking really good for its 12th year of life. Once again I love my passat!

  • Yes, it's a station Wagen, Yes, it's fun to drive.

It's a German engineered station wagen. It's all wheel drive, It has a V6. This all equals fast and fun to drive. Plus the bonus of being able to move stuff without owning a truck to do it. I had previously owned a Passat VR6 4 motion wagen and had sold it. after a few years, I really missed it. So I let my friend at the German car dealer know to keep an eye out for one. He came through and I have enjoyed having this version of Passat back in my garage. It's very comfortable, and drives fantastic.

  • This VW is roomy, lots of power and fun to drive

The 2.0 L turbo diesel is the best ! it has power, 38-48 mpg and being maintained will last ( not uncommon 400,00 miles ). Lots of room inside the car and handles like a sports car. This was going to be a gift for ( my wife ) but did not work out, and I'm a truck guy so It's garaged until sold.

This is a good wagon that drives like a car. Love the leather interior and the front seats being heated! Following Volkswagen's maintenance and service schedule can drain your pocket book, but will keep this car running for a long time.

  • Power, safety, well-built, long lasting

You have to watch it on the freeway, somehow it goes faster than you feel it going! Such effortless power. Diesels also last so much longer. ONly flaw is that dratted torque converter likes to go out.
