As is par for the course in these times of coronavirus quarantining and social distancing, Genesis has announced that the redesigned 2021 G80 sedan will be unveiled online via livestream Sunday. The G80 is the second new or redesigned model for 2021 from Hyundai’s luxury division, following the first major public appearance of the GV80 SUV in February at the 2020 Chicago Auto Show.

The unveiling announcement didn’t offer any new details or new images of the G80, but there’s still some meat on the bone for us to talk about — starting with the car’s new look. From the side, the G80 features a trio of dual lines (like “equals” signs) that unite the car’s styling in profile. Up front is a large five-sided grille similar to the one found on the larger, updated-for-2020 Genesis G90 sedan, which dips dramatically low, making the front appear as though it doesn’t really have a bumper. In all, the G80’s refreshed styling looks both classy and futuristic, minus the old-school five-spoke wheels we see in the teaser  images, but we can’t be sure if those will make the final cut.

Inside, we can make a few educated guesses based on what is seen in the GV80, starting with that infotainment screen. It stretches 14.5 inches across the top of the dash and can be split to perform different functions. In the GV80, the screen is a bit far away to be used as a regular touchscreen by the driver, so we’ll have to see if the G80 suffers from similar dimensional challenges — but luckily, the photos also show that the G80 will get a set of redundant multimedia controls between the two front seats.

As for insight into the rest, that’ll just have to wait. We’d hope that the G80 adopts some of the GV80’s safety advancements like lane changing with its Highway Driving Assist II system, a forward collision system that also detects vehicles approaching from the right or left at an intersection, and active blind spot monitoring with collision avoidance. Those are all incremental advancements on systems already found in Genesis and Hyundai vehicles, so if I were a betting man (which I am) I’d wager on those all being in the reworked G80 as well.
