Expert 2002 Buick Century review

our expert's take
Our expert's take
By Cars.com editors
Full article
our expert's take

Vehicle Overview
Developed from the same basic design as the midsize Buick Regal, the four-door Century sedan has more conservative styling and appeals to an older group of buyers. Although sales dipped by nearly 9 percent during 2000, to 143,085 units, the Century has been a long-time rival of the full-size Buick LeSabre in the race to be the most popular Buick model.

Exterior
Although its styling is related to that of the jauntier Regal, the Century has a different grille, rear styling features, body trim and wheels. That makes it relatively easy to tell the two apart at a glance. Both Buicks are four-door sedans and ride a 109-inch wheelbase, but at 194.6 inches long overall, the Century is a little shorter than the Regal. Both models are 72.7 inches wide and stand 56.6 inches tall. Painted aluminum wheels are now available in a special Appearance Package.

Interior
Other than the Century’s bench seats and six-passenger seating capacity and the Regal’s sportier front buckets, these cars’ interiors are very similar. Both the Custom and Limited versions of the Century have a three-place front bench seat with a folding center armrest that includes storage space. Front buckets are available only as part of the Touring Package for the Custom Special Edition.

Standard equipment on both models includes dual-zone air conditioning, a tilt steering wheel, remote keyless entry, cornering lamps, an AM/FM radio, and power windows, locks and mirrors. The Limited sedan adds variable-assist power steering, cruise control, leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a six-way power driver’s seat, heated mirrors and a cassette stereo system.

GM’s satellite-based OnStar communication system is standard on the upscale Limited and the Custom Special Edition, and is a factory-installed option for the base Custom sedan. Trunk capacity totals 16.7 cubic feet.

Under the Hood
A 3.1-liter V-6 engine produces 175 horsepower and drives a four-speed-automatic transmission. The higher-performing Regal, by comparison, holds a 3.8-liter V-6.

Safety
Antilock brakes, a tire-pressure monitor and traction control are standard. A side-impact airbag for the driver’s seat is included with leather upholstery, which is standard on the Limited and optional on the Custom Special Edition sedan.

  • At our local car lot I had driven 2 cars and wasn't

At our local car lot I had driven 2 cars and wasn't satisfied with either I asked if the dealer had more in my price range..he said no...as I was leaving I saw a nice looking car I said hey there's no price on this is it someones? he said no it had just come in.. I asked could I drive it he said sure...As soon as I sat down I knew this was one great car! It was clean inside and out I said to my girlfriend ..if this starts right up, I'm buying it...well it started right up I left the lot for the test drive and it drove quiet, smooth as silk. I was in love but then I've always loved Buick's I've owned 5 in my 70 years. Super car. 2002 bought in 2024 with 120k. $4950.

  • Reliable, perfect car for commute, 22-25 M/G

I purchased a used 2002 Buick Century with 80,000 miles on it.. All options are similar to this car. I commute back and forth to work daily 70 miles. This car is comfortable, reliable, good gas mileage 23 - 28 M/G. I would recommend this car for anyone.

  • Car of amazing value

It’s 2019 and I just bought this car with just under 100,000 miles. Easily the best I’ve ever owned. Driving feels smooth and comfortable, the seats are amazing (so long as you’re lucky enough to get the car in the condition I was), and it runs extremely quiet. The only real complaint I’ve had is that for me it’s hard to read the mileage and which gear I have the car in. At this point I have it down to feel, though it would be nice to be able to see what I am in.

  • Just bought it, but I'm in love!

If you want a smooth ride, solid engine, spacious interior and trunk, consider one of these! I have driven sedans for years and years at a time, I just found my next car to keep and maintain for years to come!

  • Deal of a liftetime

This 2002 Buick Century Limited is as clean as they come. It's like it came of the showroom floor. It had 38, 845 original miles on it!! Less miles than some newer used cars. Leather interior. Everything was immaculate. It was an elderly ladies car who passed and left it to her daughter. It rides so smooth. Everything on the car is original. The only thing I did was tint the windows of course, due to the heat here in AZ. I am very happy and satisfied. I will keep it as long as I can. I would like to put in a new stereo when I can save up.

  • Great car. Low mileage.

I really liked my Buick and I would purchase a Buick again. Was a nice size sedan, comfortable and easy to drive. I did not have a lot of maintenance issues even for being a used car.

  • Nice clean comfortable 4 door sedan

It was used when I purchased it and I have enjoyed 8 years of ownership. It is clean and comfortable with plenty of leg room. Trunk space is huge. Drives smoothly and has had few mechanical problems. There are some cosmetic issues to deal with but the engine is good and the mileage is low for its age. It is time to pass it along.
