Vehicle Overview

The five-seat Chevrolet Equinox small SUV has been on sale in its current form for six model years. At that age, a car is typically due for a full redesign, but that’s not what the Equinox gets for the 2016 model year. Instead, Chevrolet said in a statement that it has “contemporized” the Equinox with new styling and more features like a newly standard backup camera.

The base L trim level is only available with front-wheel drive, but LS, LT and LTZ trims can have all-wheel drive. Like its predecessor, the 2016 Equinox is powered by a standard four-cylinder engine or an available V-6. It hits dealerships this fall.

ExteriorNew front-end styling is the 2016 Equinox’s most significant exterior update. All trim levels get new projector-beam headlights, and the new twin-port grille has a larger lower opening and a slimmer body-colored bar. LT and LTZ trim levels add LED daytime running lights, and the LTZ has new fog lights.

Chevrolet has also reworked the Equinox’s taillights, and the chrome exhaust tips on V-6 models are new. Restyled 17- and 18-inch aluminum wheels are offered.

InteriorThe Equinox’s center control panel has a new storage shelf, and a 7-inch touch-screen stereo is now standard; LT and LTZ trim levels add Chevrolet’s MyLink multimedia system. OnStar with 4G LTE internet connectivity is available; it turns the Equinox into a rolling Wi-Fi hot spot whenever the SUV is running. A three-month/3-gigabyte data trial is included.

In recognition of the increasing use of tablets for in-car entertainment, the Equinox can be fitted with a tablet holder. The dealer accessory attaches to the back of the front seats and is designed to accommodate a variety of devices.

Under the HoodA 182-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is standard while a 301-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 is available. Both engines drive a six-speed automatic transmission.

SafetyThe Equinox includes federally mandated front airbags, antilock brakes and an electronic stability system. Available safety features include a blind spot warning system, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning and lane departure warning.

  • Do not buy the 2.

Do not buy the 2.4L Equinox. Timing belt suddenly broke, the engine is locked up and the car is worthless. No check engine light until the belt broke suddenly. I was told by Chevy dealer this happens on these older model years. Was a great car otherwise. Was told they fixed this problem in the newer model years.

  • Enjoyed it for the 10k miles I got out of it.

Enjoyed it for the 10k miles I got out of it. Then the awful design caught up with me. Takes 2 hours to change the battery because they designed it so you have to take several other pieces off to get to the battery slot. Then electrical system went, followed quickly by being told I had to replace the entire engine for $12k. Never buying American again.

  • Engine completely burns oil with NO warning.

Why isn’t there a recall for the engine burning up oil and then the engine getting completely ruined? I’m not the only one this has happened to either. Once is an accident, twice is coincidence. It’s 6500 to get a new one. That’s money I don’t have. I’m a single mom and now I’m out of a car and no way to get anywhere. I depended on my car. A lot. Highly upset.

  • No regales tu dinero.

  • What happened to Chevy

I like Chevy. The Equinox made me feel safe, I like the size, the way it handles the road, very comfortable ride,it's a good expensive looking auto until the paint falls off, it burns up oil,the seals are no good, you end up afraid to drive it with the noise under the hood. The pistons rap, timing belt comes loose, then the cam & crank shaft dont sync together, repair all that & the motor blows. Why do you continue to put this on the market?I am very, very disapointed. You totally get ripped off from Chevy with this one. Recall them. Im afraid to put my 93 yr old Mother & two granddaughters in it for fear of breaking down.

  • Bad transmission

Never got to have the car I bought for more than 2 hours. Picked it up and gave it back 2 hours later and that was over 3 weeks ago! Completely unable to drive-“transmission” in the end (I think-still waiting) but torque converter replaced and still bad. No desire to own this car and no faith in purchasing anything right now! Total buyers remorse UGH

  • Terrible vehicle

I purchased this vehicle in November 2021 at 80,000 miles. It has 82,000 miles on it now. This vehicle was suppose to be my daily driver. It has been in the auto shop over 10 times. This is the worse car I have ever owned. I've had a lot of cars in my life. I thought Chevrolets were good cars. This one must have came from another planet.
