Just as smaller passenger cars and practical-sized sport-utility vehicles are making a comeback, Chrysler Group brings forth the Dodge Ram Mega Cab, a pickup truck that’s the approximate size of a hotel lobby.

Maybe the Chrysler crew has it figured out. Lately, it has been making money while American rivals General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. have been shedding jobs and manufacturing plants.

The all-new 2006 Mega Cab’s bread-and-butter is a back seat area where even three huge adults can spread out in open space one normally associates with a stretch limo – a whopping 68.9 of the nearly 134 cubic feet in the tested Ram’s interior cabin was dedicated to back-seat comfort.

But the Mega Cab is so much more than its back seat; it’s big everywhere.

Consider these monster dimensions in the tested, rear-drive Ram 2500 Laramie Mega Cab: 247.7 inches long, a wheelbase of 160.5 inches, 80 inches wide, 74.7 inches high and weighing in at a tractor-traileresque 7,352 pounds.

Mega, indeed.

Climbing up into the driver’s seat of the Mega Cab – not the easiest feat – I had a magnificent view of my surroundings, including far horizons.

As for that Mega Cab TV commercial where everybody wants to ride in the back and the frustrated driver appears to lean over from his seat and push open the passenger-side front door: Give me a break!

I couldn’t have reached the passenger door from the driver’s seat if I had Shaquille O’Neal’s right arm and a tennis racket.

Big torque was evident in the tester, equipped with a 5.9-liter Cummins turbodiesel in-line 6. (The Mega Cab also can be had with a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 with 345 horsepower.) The diesel power plant is rated at a respectable 325 horses, but torque is a mind-blowing 610 foot-pounds, coming in at mere 1,600 revolutions per minute.

That’s a rock-grinding level of torque, and the muscle was particularly felt when getting up to speed from near-standing starts on freeway entrance ramps. Yet when the truck reached highway cruising speed, the ride was remarkably smooth and quiet – especially for a diesel. There was no need to scream at passengers to be heard.

With the smooth ride, lots of interior cabin space, easy-to-use comfort/convenience controls and a high ride height providing a good look at the road ahead, the tester was a pleasant, secure environment on the open road.

On city streets, however, it was another ballgame.

Getting comfortable with the Mega Cab’s bulk in close quarters takes time. Even after a week, I never felt entirely secure. I was constantly checking clearance on either side of the pickup. Its surprisingly light steering made me wary of drifting out of my lane.

Tight parking lots are the Mega Cab’s enemy, something to be feared. Turn your head for one moment and roll over a bump, and you’re never quite sure if you’ve just hit a pothole or crushed a Mini Cooper flat as a dime.

The Mega Cab’s extreme mass excludes it from federal fuel economy estimates, but Dodge estimates it gets 15 miles per gallon in city driving and 19 mpg on the highway. Suffice it to say that a Mega Cab buyer should set aside serious funds for fuel. The truck’s tank is a 35-gallon indoor pool, a pricey well to fill up at today’s pump rates – diesel or gas.

So, who wants this truck?

Suburban commuters and soccer moms are likely out of the mix, but the Mega Cab might be the prototypical vehicle for a big ranch or construction site.

In what else can you haul building materials and tools and still have enough space in the back seats for three guys with shoulders as wide as a Pontiac Solstice?

Oh, there’s a bonus: Tilting/folding features in the back seats enable Mega Cab owners to take advantage of multiple configurations to carry plentiful, odd-shaped cargo inside the pickup.

Want to carry some more stuff behind your Mega Cab? No problem; the tester listed a heavyweight towing capacity of 12,500 pounds.

Please note, the Mega Cab can be had in either cheaper or more expensive versions, including those with the aforementioned Hemi V-8 and four-wheel drive.

The tester started at a somewhat lofty $39,260 and was dressed up with another $10,000 or so in extras. If you just want the big-interior part of the Mega Cab, think in terms of $40,000 … and expansive parking lots with extra-wide parking spaces.

  • I bought the 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 SLT Mega Cab Diesel

    I bought the 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 SLT Mega Cab Diesel Heavy Duty as a dealer demo with 8,000 miles on it. Didn't need a mega cab but needed to replace my 1996 so they offered it to me for a deal I couldn't refuse. I have to say, it's a monster and I love it! Have had minimal issues other than the ECM going out at 110,000 miles and Dodge wouldn't warranty it. It tows anything I hook up to and with diesel prices in CA, I can brag about 17 to 21 mph around town and 27 to 30 on hi ways. Towing can cut mpg in about half, if you get stuck in slow lane up a grade, but still, who can boast about that with 195k miles on it today. I agree with the reviews on parking and turn ratio but I can back it in easier than doing a 3 point pull in at any parking lot. How's that for lady with a big truck!!

  • 375,084 just warming up!!!!

    Im the second owner of a 2006 Ram 3500 5.9 CUMMINS CREW CAB SLT Bighorn SRW. It is a 4x4 with the 8ft. bed. I am currently at 375,083 miles. I can recommend this truck being one of the most solid and dependable trucks I've ever had the privilege of owning. My grandfather purchased this brand new in 2005 and I inherited it in 2017. I put at least 60 miles on it daily. This is on the original block, and has not been overhauled. The transmission however was overhauled at 250,000 miles. The fuel injectors were warrantied at that same service. I have had to obviously do typical wear and tear on the vehicle such as ball joints wheel bearings shocks Etc. However overall I would say the reliability has been outstanding. I would not have a single problem getting in the vehicle and driving across the country right at this moment without a single concern for reliability .

  • Awesome Truck!

    I have owned my 06 Megacab since October of 05. I purchased it with 3 miles on it and it now has 522k! There has been some repairs but still well worth the investment.

    Have owned my 2006, 3500 Dodge Cummins since new. After 18 years it is still a pleasure to drive and has never disappointed. So happy I bought this truck. Powerful, reliable and strong. Great truck! I love it!

  • The truck that could.

    I've owned it since 2006, 18 years and 5.9 is still bomb proof at 210K. I rebuilt and strengthen the transmission at 160K besides that I've had no issues besides wear and tear that was expected. New ball joints at 120k, new shocks every 80k. This truck won't let you down.

  • The Reason I bought a 2007 5.9 Cummins

    So my review will be a little different than some of the other ones. I just bought this truck a month ago, 2007 RAM 5.9 Cummins, quad cab. I specifically was looking for a 2006 or 2007 RAM because it has the new body style and the 5.9 more reliable engine. The second half of 2007 is when the 6.7 liter diesel with the first emission controls started with the EGR's. The reason that I got one of these amazing trucks is because they don't have the problematic and expensive to replace emission controls, many have deleted them but its a federal crime and I am not willing to take that risk of a 25,000 fine if I ran across the wrong person, even though I live in the free state of Texas. My Truck has been lifted 6" and has 37" tires, a SunCoast billet transmission. The owner that had it before me put in the transmission which is a known week spot in these trucks, he replaced the injectors with stock injectors and put a tune on it that gives it 450 horse power and some where in the 750 ft pounds of torque. Its fast! It does roll coal because of the tune, I am not a fan and will fix that. It is possible to get that kind of power while not fogging everyone out. I got this truck to tow a 5th wheel RV while waiting for a 2024 Ford F350 Platnium, Tremor, HO. I sold a 2020 Raptor when I purchased this truck so when I say its fast, its fast. I honestly have kinda fallen in love with this truck, its fun to drive but kind of a rough ride. My wife is NOT a fan at all. There is actually a chance that I keep it for the long run and avoid the $1,400.00 that I will have on the truck I ordered.

  • Best truck ever! (Owned 14 years)

    I have been driving this truck for 14 years. Great off-road, on road, pulling my gooseneck trailer. 150k miles and drives like new. Had to replace the bed with one from Texas after it rusted out but well worth the money. Still gets amazing milage with 20-22 combined city and highway with a manual transmission. If you find one in good shape BUY IT. You will love it.

  • LOVE the Cummins Diesel

    I will own this and drive it until it will not go anymore and that is said to be 1,000,000 miles on this engine. This truck can tow anything and does amazing offroad as well as onroad. With the large cabin we can fit a full sized memory foam mattress inside and camp anywhere.

  • Powerful Reliable truck!

    Other than having to replace all four ball joints at 41k miles the truck drives and handles good for the size. Interior is generic compared to the newer models but over all I really like this truck! Plenty of power from Cummins diesel engine and got 24mpg driving home from purchasing truck which is impressive for a 3/4 ton 4x4 truck! Last year of the 5.9 pre emission Cummins which is reason for purchase! Pulls like a road tractor and sounds like one too! Easy to change oil and filter Should last a long time!
