Vehicle Overview
Based on General Motors’ Silverado full-size pickup truck, the Yukon XL is the king-size version of GMC’s Yukon sport utility vehicle. The Chevrolet Suburban, which differs little in structure, is the corporate twin of the Yukon XL. Full-size rivals include the mammoth Ford Excursion and the Toyota Sequoia.

Like the automaker’s shorter Yukon, the Yukon XL comes in SLE, SLT and plush Denali trim levels. GMC aims this SUV at a more upscale audience with the Denali luxury edition, which includes leather upholstery and a premium sound system with an in-dash six-CD changer.

Half-ton models are labeled Yukon XL 1500, while the Yukon XL 2500 has a three-quarter-ton rating. A 6.0-liter or 8.1-liter V-8 powers the 2500 version, while the 1500 comes with a standard 5.3-liter V-8. Denali models — offered only in half-ton form — get a 335-horsepower, 6.0-liter V-8.

New Ultra Bright 17-inch wheels and a DVD-based touch-screen navigation radio are available, and GM’s StabiliTrak electronic stability system is standard. Several other notable features, including steering-wheel-mounted auxiliary controls, GM’s OnStar communication system and an electrochromatic rearview mirror, become standard for 2006.

Exterior
Built on a 130-inch wheelbase, the Yukon XL has four side doors. It stretches to 219.3 inches long overall, which is 20 inches longer than the regular Yukon but shorter than the Excursion. Denali models can be fitted with 20-inch seven-spoke wheels.

Interior
All Yukon XL models have three rows of seats, which yield a seating capacity of seven, eight or nine occupants, depending on the configuration. Bucket seats or a three-place bench go up front, and the second row holds two or three people. All models have a three-place rear bench that folds down and can be removed.

Cargo volume in the Yukon XL measures nearly 46 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 131.6 cubic feet when the middle and rear seats are removed. A rear-seat DVD entertainment system is optional. Denali models include XM Satellite Radio and adjustable pedals, which are optional in other Yukon XLs.

Under the Hood
The half-ton Yukon XL 1500 uses a 295-hp, 5.3-liter V-8, which can now run on a combination of gasoline and ethanol. Denali models are equipped with a 335-hp, 6.0-liter V-8 that produces 375 pounds-feet of torque. A 335-hp, 6.0-liter V-8 is standard and a 325-hp, 8.1-liter V-8 is optional in three-quarter-ton 2500 models. All engines team with a four-speed-automatic transmission.

The Denali has permanently engaged four-wheel drive. Other Yukon XL models are available with rear-wheel drive or Autotrac four-wheel drive that engages automatically when additional traction is needed. Yukon XL 1500 models can tow as much as 7,800 pounds, and the Yukon XL 2500 equipped with the 8.1-liter engine can haul up to 12,000 pounds when properly equipped.

Safety
Dual-stage occupant-sensing front airbags, antilock brakes and StabiliTrak are standard. Side-impact airbags are standard in the Denali and optional in other models.

My favorite car I have ever owned. I've had cars, trucks and a couple of small suv type vehicles. I thought it would feel like a big blazer. And boy oh boy was I wrong. I bought it ar 180,000 miles and it drives like a dream. All the power I could ever ask for. A bigger engine than my camaro had and almost as fast. My kids love it, I love it the wife hates the mpg but if we have a snow storm we take the denali, when we have the 4 kids me and mom and we can still fit another adult and any and all luggage. What is there to complain about. It's reliable and when you expect the instrument cluster panel to be wonky from bad wiring. Well it's nothing that stops me from getting where I want to go everytime. I love the vehicle and hope to keep it for a very long time.

  • This big cat corners well with power to spare

All the comforts of home in a dependable / capable / safe vehicle . 7 people can travel in style and arrive relaxed after a 4 hour drive ( with room inside for their luggage. )Lots of onboard entertainment options including a Panasonic blue ray player . I Repair vehicles for a living in a harsh Canadian climate and have been pleasantly surprised with the durability and toughness this vehicle has exhibited for 6 years . It’s base design stemmed from 2002 technologies that were modified with communication networks. It was totally redesigned in 2007 . I purchased mine with 246,00 k and currently have 308,000 k on it. With proper maintenance it drives like new . You can tell this vehicle was manufactured in the good old days nothing flimsy here .

  • Heard to believe it is American made!

One of the best I have ever owned ! Hard to believe it was American made! Over all it served my family well! I can only think of a couple of times that we had to put it in the shop! Once was for a water pump and once for the front blower fan and once for a new radiator !

  • Was sad to get rid of.

Probably my favorite vehicle I owned. It was a Denali with all the extras and a chameleon color of blue and green. Had to trade she the front frame broke on the country road I lived on. Still wish I had it

  • Great power and towing capacity

I thought it was a great ride and spaces truck. It has a very powerful v8 engine 6.0 rated at 335hp with 380 foot pounds of torque. Great towing capacity. It's also a comforting to ride.

  • Great multi purpose vehicle.

I am a Realtor and used it for showings and also to haul staging items. With the 3 row removed it had lots of storage. Was drivable in most weather conditions. The only negative was that average MPG was 15.

  • My Dream SUV

I've purchased my black Denali in early January with 55K. I knew in advance that it will be comfortable, roomy but was worried a bit about performance like acceleration, due to its size. I was totally shocked to find out that I NEVER drove or had a fast vehicle like this before. Flooring the pedal even at 50/60 mph pushes you strongly into your seat. If you do it at lower speed, you should warn your passengers to protect his/her neck from injury. It makes me wonder if all of them are like this or mine was specifically fine tuned by the pervious owner. I get 11/17 mpg -city/highway, as I expected. I love the luxory, nice drive it provides. I don' use it for daily commute. I LOVE , LOVE, LOVE it! If you can afford, you owe to yourself to get one.

  • no problems - very reliable

bone stock except for a K & N cone filter. no problems, no leaks, burns even the cheapest of off-brand gasoline. great looks, great power, 18.3mpg highway, heated-seats, a great comfortable ride. the NAV & Rear Entertainment DVD have separately gone from "sometimey" to "don't count on it" over the last year, but still a great truck....(I did not buy new)

  • Just bought and love it!

We are a family of five plus a black lab. We needed a bigger vehicle and the Yukon XL had it all. There is room for everyone with the 3rd row seating. Only downfall is getting in and out of the 3rd row. We learned you can't put 3 car seats in the 2nd row unless you want to crawl over the back seat to get to the 3rd row. We bought ours used and within a month had to replace the alternator (no biggie) and my wind-shield wipers stopped working. Something about a ground wire. All in all I LOVE the extra room we have for our family trips. And I found out you can fit about 17 bags of cedar chips in the back no problem!

  • This is one big SUV!

This SUV is amazingly easy to handle for its size. Easy to park - No. But after time you get used to it. Nothing beats the comfort of this SUV. All instruments including the XM radio, GPS, moon roof, etc. are within easy reach. This is the perfect family/tow vehicle. I have owned my 2006 for a little over a year and have had no problems. I have only owned Japanese cars in the past and this is my first American made car. The fit and finish isn't as perfect as my previous Toyotas, but this GMC is not bad.
