When we first drove the redesigned 2022 Jeep Compass, Cars.com reviewer Brian Normile noted that the compact SUV’s high-quality cabin and upscale tech features were among its only redeeming attributes. I agreed in a subsequent review, placing much of the blame on its slow, awkward powertrain. Now it’s time to triple down: Even though the Compass got a new standard engine for 2023, this is still what’s holding it back from being good.

For 2023, the previous 177-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine has been replaced with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 200 hp. The new engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission instead of the previous six- and nine-speed automatics. The 2023 Compass has standard four-wheel drive, and a 10.1-inch infotainment screen, drowsy-driver monitor and rear-seat reminder are also newly standard.

On paper, all of these extra standard features sound impressive, and you’d think they’d help the Compass stand out in the compact SUV class — but not so fast.

The Little Engine That Couldn’t

I had high hopes for the Compass’ new engine, which adds an extra 23 hp and 49 pounds-feet of torque over the SUV’s previous lethargic powertrain, but it’s not enough. Weirdly, the new 2.0-liter engine manages to feel both peppy and sluggish.

From a stop, acceleration is definitely livelier than the outgoing setup. The new powertrain’s responsiveness is a big step up from the old one, but power delivery is a problem. It lacks smoothness; after a bit of lag, takeoffs feel abrupt and are tough to modulate. The combination of that lag and the Compass’ hair-trigger gas pedal makes it hard to accelerate smoothly. Stopping is no better thanks to a touchy brake pedal. The result is an unsettling jerkiness that’s compounded by the Compass’ shuddering engine stop-start system.

The previous Compass I drove had an unpredictable nine-speed automatic transmission, with shifts that were sometimes lazy and sometimes hasty. At no time, however, were they smooth. Like a bad case of deja vu, the new eight-speed automatic echoes this behavior. After rushing through the lower gears at takeoff, midrange power delivery was inconsistent and often left me waiting. The new eight-speed transmission sometimes holds gears too long, and its delayed shifts made me wonder if I was accidentally in manual-shift mode. (I wasn’t.)

What’s more, this new engine sounds very strange. At idle, there’s an unrefined clatter and vibration that’s reminiscent of a diesel. It quiets down once you get up to speed, but when you decelerate, it burbles like a wounded sports car.

One bright spot is the Compass’ fuel economy, which is improved for 2023. The new powertrain gets an EPA-estimated 24/32/27 mpg city/highway/combined, up from the 4WD 2022 Compass’ 22/30/25 mpg.

Those new gas mileage estimates put the Compass more in line with competitors, including base AWD versions of the Honda CR-V (27/32/29 mpg) and Toyota RAV4 (27/34/30 mpg). However, the 2023 Compass’ fuel economy is still well below the Nissan Rogue’s EPA-estimated 28/35/31 mpg with AWD.

It’s Not All Bad

As with the 2022 version, there’s a lot to like inside the 2023 Compass. I tested the Latitude trim level, and its cabin was lovely, with convincing imitation-leather upholstery and classy gray fabric trim with blue contrast stitching on the doors and dash. Everything looks and feels high-quality.

That carries over to the infotainment system, which has long been a favorite of mine. As with the 2022 model, the 2023’s Uconnect 5 touchscreen system is easily the best thing about the Compass. The bigger 10.1-inch screen is now standard, and it’s highly customizable, responsive and straightforward to use. What’s more, the standard wireless smartphone connection was seamless, and the system can connect multiple devices via Bluetooth for extra flexibility.

The Compass’ other controls are still refreshingly simple, with on/off buttons for the SUV’s safety systems placed under the screen and large climate-control buttons below them.

What’s Next?

With the new turbo 2.0-liter engine for 2023 after significant updates for 2022, it’s unlikely the Compass will see any more big changes in the short term. That said, the addition of an EV to the Compass lineup could help its powertrain woes, and there are signs that one might be in the works.

Chrysler, one of Jeep’s sibling brands under parent automaker Stellantis, has announced plans to electrify its lineup in the coming years. Though nothing specific had been announced as of this writing, there is a Compass 4xe plug-in hybrid available in Europe.

An electrified Compass would make sense; many competitors are adding hybrid and all-electric powertrains to their compact SUV lineups: The CR-V is available as a hybrid, the RAV4 can be had as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, and a Chevrolet Equinox EV is coming for 2024.

The previous Compass’ powertrain was long overdue for an overhaul, but the 2023’s new engine only creates more problems. This Jeep continues to lag its compact SUV competitors when it comes to drivetrain responsiveness and refinement, sending this Compass spinning in the wrong direction.

  • My wife and I bought a 23' Jeep Compass Limited with 15K

    My wife and I bought a 23' Jeep Compass Limited with 15K miles. We were looking for something small but also a vehicle that could offer 4x4. My initial impression of it at the dealership was that it has an awesome exterior paint color (granite crystal) and black wheels to compliment it. The car drives great on the highway and city. It's a very comfortable ride and the car can turn on a dime! I am currently averaging 30 mpg while commuting to work each day. I have noticed the car will sometimes have difficulty up shifting. As long as I apply more gas it eventually gets over it. Not a big deal for me as my last vehicle would do the same thing. The rear view camera is nice on the Compass, however it is completely useless at night. Overall we are very happy with our purchase.

  • It’s a good 4x4 compact suv for mountain living.

    I bought a 2023 Jeep compass Latitude Lux. Wish they come with all the other specs in driver assists like wireless charging, power tailgate, dual zone AC control, adaptive cruise control etc.

    We like the Jeep because I have a good experience with those cars, the first one was a Cherokee, the Compass it is very economical on gas especially on the highway, the only thing is that it doesn't have to open the trunk from inside the car not even with the key, I like it.

  • I am enjoying my Jeep compass trailhawk.

    I bought a trailhawk, thought it would be the best for resale value. The new engine is terrific besides better gas mileage better air quality it feels just as fast as the six-cylinder I used to have in the Cherokee. The new interior feels like it was made for me. I fit in it perfectly. Easy to scoot around in easy to park!

  • Mostly Good With Some Drawbacks

    I've owned my 2023 Jeep Compass High Altitude for 3 months and have put 2,000 miles on it, and overall it's a really good vehicle but would be better with a few improvements. The interior layout of the car is excellent -- everything is easy to reach, navigate, and adjust. The center screen is bright, crisp, and snappy and was one of the major draws for me over the prior models. The interior in general feels much roomier than other small SUVs in this class. The ride is smooth and comfortable on long trips, though I do find the premium leather seats to be stiffer than the "standard" leather seats in the lower trim models, which is surprising. The gas mileage is quite good and the brakes are fantastic. I also like the exterior design because it looks even more like a baby Grand Cherokee, and the two-tone paint looks sharp if you're into that. Also, the moonroof is huge and really opens up the interior of the car. I haven't owned the car long enough to comment on reliability, but so far so good in that department. Now for the things that need improvement. First, the engine sounds like a literal go-kart and is quite loud inside the vehicle. Yes, the engine is small but I feel like they could have done something to alter the sound or at least dampen the cabin noise better. Second, there are rattles coming from various places in the car, most notably from the headliner around the moonroof. Considering I paid 42k for the top trim, this is disappointing and quite annoying. Makes the car feel a little cheap and/or hastily assembled. Also cheap feeling are the buttons under the center screen and the interior/exterior door handles. I came from a 2018 Audi Q3 and the fit and finish just doesn't compare in that regard. Overall it's a minor thing but worth mentioning. The last thing (and maybe my biggest gripe) that I'm really bummed the Compass doesn't have is an adjustable tailgate. I have a small garage with low headroom and I have to unload anything from the back of the car before I pull into the garage because the tailgate would most certainly bang into the overhead garage door when fully opened. I believe the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee both had the option to set the max tailgate height and I don't see why they couldn't include that feature in the new Compass. Overall, it's a good car with more positives than negatives, but with a few improvements it could be the perfect small SUV.

  • Our New Compass

    My wife wanted a new suv. She wanted one that was not real big, and not real small. And the Compass was just the right size for her when we went to look at it so she bought it. In early September we took it to Ocean City, Maryland and it handled the luggage of four people, it rode nice, and got good gas mileage. We are pleased.

    I am very impressed with this vehicle. The new engine was a significant improvement. The infotainment screen is a little touchy but overall it is a exceptional vehicle.

  • Not the Compass of the past

    I was looking for a new daily commuter that I would pass down to the kid in a few years and ended up going with the Compass after test driving just about everything in the subcompact SUV class. I almost dismissed it due to some of the mediocre reviews I had read but I honestly believe these reviews are spill-over from previous generations. Im not saying the Compass is the best thing on the market but it is way better than half the SUV’s that are consistently ranked higher than it. The Compass wins in looks compared to almost every other subcompact and now that it has the new 2.0T and 8speed it performs just as well. There were other subcompacts that I liked better in certain areas but the Compass was the best well-rounded pick. The Mazda CX-5 2.5Turbo was the better performance vehicle but the interior was outdated and the infotainment system was not good. The Dodge Hornet GT plus looked amazing and drove great but there was minimal technology and I couldn’t find one with leather. The Rav4 TRD Off-Road had a mean rugged look but everything else about it was lackluster. The Honda CR-V checked a lot of boxes for me (ie. Safety, space, MPG’s, etc.) but the Compass felt better. Pros: • Exterior design looks great, it literally is a small Grand Cherokee. • Interior design and materials are top-notch. • New engine and transmission make it a completely new Compass. • Tons of tech and safety features. Cons: • $$$$ My Compass (High Altitude w/ Driver Assistance and Elite packages) was $44K… that’s Grand Cherokee / Wrangler prices! • I didn’t notice it until I read a review but there is a significant amount of engine noise in the cabin although the Alpines take care of that. • Engine is better but wish they could’ve squeezed 25-50 more horsepower out of it. • It is on the smaller side of it’s class.

  • Excellent vehicle

    Easy entry and exit. Controls easy-to-use. Comfortable seating. Excellent handling. Engine is strong and gets excellent gas mileage. Fit and finish is excellent. Lazer Blue Pearlcoat is beautiful.
