2019 Jeep Compass review: Our expert's take

What Is the 2019 Jeep Compass?

The Jeep Compass compact SUV was redesigned for the 2017 model year. It seats five and is powered by a 180-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that teams with a standard six-speed manual or a six- or nine-speed automatic transmission. Front- and four-wheel-drive versions are offered, and those craving off-road capability should check out the Trailhawk trim level. The Compass competes with the Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4 and other small SUVs.

What’s New on the 2019 Jeep Compass?

The Compass gets a standard 7-inch touchscreen multimedia system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, and the Advanced Safety Group Package adds adaptive cruise control. A Trailhawk-inspired Upland Edition is available for the Sport trim, and a High Altitude Package is available for Limited models.

What Features in the 2019 Jeep Compass Are Most Important?

Advanced safety features like forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist are bundled together in an option package. Leather upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen multimedia system are also available. Trailhawk models feature a lifted suspension, off-road tires, skid plates, tow hooks, hill descent control and Jeep’s Active Drive Low four-wheel-drive system with a low range.

Should I Buy the 2019 Jeep Compass?

This Compass improves on its predecessor in many ways, particularly regarding interior quality, and the Trailhawk trim delivers impressive off-road performance. However, acceleration is slow, and the available nine-speed automatic transmission's responses are lazy.

Lattie, the Latitude with an Attitude!

In my many years of car driving and ownership, I have rarely had a better vehicle than my 2019 Jeep Compass Latitude. It has been reliable, comfortable, fun to drive and, for its' size and type, very good on gas. In April, I will have been driving "Lattie"for 5 years. My upkeep has been minimal. She is pretty and still looks new. This vehicle is such a pleasure to drive. Handling and response are excellent. Controls are super easy to manage and absolutely love the heated seat and steering wheel. On a long trip, it is very comfortable (yes, I have ridden in the back seat, too) and fuel economy was just great...fully loaded with air-conditioner on and travelling at highway speeds gave me 30+ mpg. Really can't complain. My Neon didn't do any better. This is a great vehicle. Oh, and I had leased it new, and purchased it when the lease was up..that's how good this car is!

Untrustworthy dealership in Mobile Alabama

Auxiliary battery dies often. Which then causes the main battery to die often. Overall glitchy electronics. And the dealership service department are of no help. They only make excuses assuming I'm an idiot.

Compass 19

I really love my new Compass, I enjoy driving it. It handles very nice and for a 4 cylinder engine it moves. The interior is very beautiful and comfortable.
