The number of cars that offer both sedan and hatchback body styles are barely existent anymore, but that number is about to grow with the new 2026 Kia K4 Hatchback that complements the already available sedan version.

Having options is great, right? The Kia K4 looks to be a compelling option right up there with the Honda Civic, which also offers both body styles, though the K4’s approach is a bit more aggressive than the Civic’s. We checked out the K4 Hatchback on the floor of the 2025 New York International Auto Show, so let’s dive into what’s changed.

Hatchback Shape

What first caught my eye was just how different the K4 looks as a hatchback versus a sedan, which is a different approach compared to the subtle differences that transforms the Civic from a sedan to hatchback. The Civic is almost indistinguishable between its sedan and hatchback body styles, while the K4 hatch embraces its hatchbackness with very different proportions versus the sedan.

The K4 Hatchback has a bold appearance because its wide styling and shorter body have an impactful effect; it’s up to 11 inches shorter than the sedan, which Kia says makes the K4 hatch more maneuverable. The K4 Hatchback’s muscular rear styling really sets it apart from the sedan, too, at least in the top offering GT-Line Turbo on display at the New York show. The K4 Hatchback will also be available in standard versions without the GT-Line appearance add-ons.

Backseat Headroom

The hatchback shape opens up an inch of headroom to backseat passengers, a welcome addition over the sedan that we’ve marked as headroom-limited for taller rear passengers. I’m nearly 6 feet tall and didn’t have any issues with the hatchback’s rear passenger headroom. Rear visibility will require on-the-road validation to confirm, but over-the-shoulder visibility appears to be pretty standard for the class, which is limited because of the aggressive rear styling that gives the K4 Hatchback its signature look.

Cargo Space

What the K4 Hatchback lacks in length versus the sedan, it makes up for in an open cargo area that expands with a 60/40-split, folding backseat on the GT-Line Turbo I sampled. I didn’t observe any underfloor storage, and the cargo area appears to be shallower and less roomy than the Civic hatchback’s, though we’ll have to wait for our official cargo testing to compare cargo volume.

Appeal Factor [To Me, Anyway]

The K4 Hatchback I saw at the auto show was the primo example: the GT-Line Turbo in its hatchback-only Sparkling Yellow paint. For my tastes, I found the K4 Hatchback more exciting than I expected considering it’s just a new body style. Instead, the whole character of the K4 has changed, which is saying a lot because many small SUVs and hatchbacks don’t have a lot of character as practicality and value tend to win in affordable utility vehicles.

Pricing, trim-level features and fuel-economy info are all coming later, though for reference, a current GT-Line Turbo sedan starts at just under $30,000, while the base K4 starts around $23,000 (prices include destination). But if personality is something that appeals to you, then the 2026 K4 hatch should be on your list to check out when it goes on sale in late 2025.
