2024 Kia Niro Plug-In Hybrid review: Our expert's take

By Jared Gall

The Kia Niro is like those toys that grow with your kid: The first step is the baby toy, the Niro hybrid; toddlers graduate to the second step, the Niro Plug-in Hybrid. Kia fully redesigned the Niro lineup for the 2023 model year, so the only change to the plug-in for 2024 is that Fire Orange Metallic paint is no longer available. (The regular hybrid is detailed here. The company has not released details on the all-electric Niro EV yet.) For 2024, the Niro PHEV starts at $35,615 (all prices include $1,325 destination).

Trim Levels and Pricing

With its 180-horsepower, 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine augmented by an electric motor and battery pack, the front-wheel-drive Niro PHEV is capable of 33 miles of all-electric travel and is rated at 108 miles per gallon-equivalent, according to Kia. A six-speed dual-clutch automatic is the only transmission offered.

The base EX trim level includes rain-sensing windshield wipers, keyless entry and start, remote start, synthetic leather and cloth upholstery, heated front seats, a power driver’s seat and dual-zone climate control. All Niro PHEVs also get a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and wireless phone charging.

The plug-in’s higher-tech powertrain relative to the regular hybrid is matched by more standard safety tech. All Niro PHEVs include lane departure steering assist, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, and forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking and additional functionality to assist at intersections.

To that, the SX Touring adds a power moonroof, power liftgate and the ability to use a paired smartphone as a key. Inside, it has an eight-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, perforated synthetic leather upholstery and ventilated front seats.

The 2024 Kia Niro PHEV is on sale now. Pricing for the EX trim starts at $35,615; the SX Touring starts at $41,365.
