The Kia Seltos has been one of our favorite subcompact SUVs since it arrived for the 2021 model year thanks to its winning combination of practicality, comfort and value. For 2024, a freshening brings improvements that make the Seltos better still, enabling it to beat out all competitors in our recent comparison test.

Related: 2024 Kia Seltos Review: Better Than Ever

Along with updated styling inside and out, the 2024 model adds new available 10.25-inch displays and a more rugged-looking X-Line trim. But what really sweetens the deal is a boost in horsepower to the available turbocharged engine, along with a conventional eight-speed automatic transmission in place of the old dual-clutch automatic.

What hasn’t changed is the Seltos’ quality interior furnishings, relatively roomy cabin and cargo area, and handy features not always found with competitors. It all adds up to a winning formula that tops an increasingly crowded assortment of subcompact SUVs.

Road Test Editor Brian Normile recently put a new Seltos in the top SX trim through its paces. While he found plenty to like, he still discovered some areas that could use improvement. Click the link above for his expert review; for a quicker look, read on for five things we like about the 2024 Kia Seltos and three things we don’t.

Things We Like

1. Power Boost

As a category, subcompact SUVs are not generally known for lively acceleration. A welcome exception is the Seltos with its optional turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, which gets a 20-hp boost for 2024. With 195 hp on tap, the Seltos has sufficient power to avoid unnecessary drama in most merging and passing situations; the SX trim proved quicker from 0-60 mph than any of its competitors in our recent comparison test.

2. Gear Up

Arguably the biggest improvement engineers made to the Seltos for 2024 is ditching the old dual-clutch automatic transmission for a conventional eight-speed automatic. Gone is the clunky feel of the dual-clutch auto; the result is a much smoother and enjoyable driving experience, with crisp and responsive shifts that help make the most of the turbocharged engine’s power.

3. Agreeable Cruiser

The Seltos’ handling and steering response are impressive for the class, offering a somewhat firm but still comfortable ride, as well as controlled body motions with some body lean in corners. But what’s really impressive about the Seltos is how quiet the cabin remains at speed; it lends a refined and premium feel to the driving experience.

4. Commendable Cabin

High-quality faux-leather seating and trim surfaces lend a premium feel to the cabin, and newly available 10.25-inch touchscreen and instrument panel displays are vivid and easy to use. The interior is also roomy for a subcompact SUV, although six-footers might prefer more rear-seat legroom. Cargo capacity is also impressive for the class — second only to the Volkswagen Taos at 17.4 cubic feet, according to our measurements.

5. Bonus Features

In the SX trim, the Seltos comes with some features not usually found in the category, including a power hands-free liftgate and front seats that are not only heated but ventilated, as well. These little touches are welcome and add to the SUV’s premium feel.

More From Cars.com:

Things We Don’t Like

1. Gas Mileage

One penalty for the Seltos SX’s relatively lively acceleration is disappointing fuel economy. The turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder returns just 25/27/26 mpg city/highway/combined, according to EPA estimates. We managed to get 28.4 mpg overall, beating that combined figure in our comparison test, but the Seltos still trailed all of its competitors. Lower trims with the 2.0-liter four cylinder and continuously variable automatic do slightly better, with an EPA rating of as much as 31 mpg overall when equipped with front-wheel drive.

2. Win Some, Lose Some

While the Seltos SX comes with some nice features not always found in its competitors, it also lacks others you might expect. A heated steering wheel is not available, nor is multi-zone climate control. And while Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, both require a wired connection even as competitors have gone wireless.

3. It’ll Cost You

In a price-sensitive category, our tested Seltos SX rang in about $2,500 more than the next most expensive entrant in our comparison test. While its features and upscale look and feel help justify that premium, it’s worth mentioning that our test vehicle’s $33,085 sticker price (including destination charge) puts it well into larger compact SUV territory.

We almost got in a wreck just now, the car in front of the car in front of US slammed on their breaks. Our Kia Seltos 2024 beeped and then my husband pushed the breaks...none of us hit each other!! Thank you, Kia!!!! It was scary, and I could tell our car noticed the sudden stop before we did!! Thank-you!!

  • Fun, sporty car for a minivan mom

I love my cute little Seltos! As a minivan mom of 19 years, it's been fun to switch it up. It has a sporty look yet is still practical enough to let my teenagers drive it. A couple things I wish the Seltos had that my basic minivan had (and probably available in other models): The driver side window doesn't roll up all the way without me holding onto the button the whole time. Definitely not a deal breaker, but I guess I used it in the van because I keep trying to do it in the Seltos. My biggest complaint is about SiriusXM. I know cars are starting to not even offer it, so I should be happy I still have it. My no frills, basic minivan's Sirius radio had it where you could select from three different screens. 1: The station name 2: The artist name 3: The song name. I loved being able to see a list of 6 artists per screen with 4 different screens and selecting the artist I wanted to listen to. It also let me save up to 40 of my favorite artists/songs, and whenever that artist or song played, it would let me know and I could switch stations to listen to. I used this often. The Seltos does not offer this. I can just see a list of stations playing. Of course I can see what artist and song are playing on the station I'm currently on, but it doesn't show me what's playing on the other stations. If anyone knows how to change this, let me know! I've spent quite a lot of time looking into this. This may be the end of my Sirius subscription because of this set up. Anyway, aside from the radio, I'm thoroughly enjoying my new ride and would recommend it to anyone!

  • 2024 Kia Seltos S

Honestly, I was skeptical about the Seltos. I initially wanted the Sorento, but happy that we decided on the Seltos. Absolutely love this SUV. It’s an amazing car for the cost and would highly recommend it to anyone in the market. Features that come with it are amazing! I have the “S” model and it is packed with some really neat and convenient features that meet all the needs.

  • Practical Choice

I owned a Cadillac before owning this vehicle, so I am trying my best not to compare the two. I miss my acceleration and driving that the V6 I had in my Cadillac provided. I am also 6 ft and the interior of the Seltos does not match the room I had in my 2014 CTS. I do like the updated technology and ride handling of the Seltos. I would recommend for a single individual or a couple who does not have to worry about hauling children around. The car looks great and no issues the 2 years I have owned my Seltos.

Overall a good vehicle. Great styling, nice range of color options, comfortable interior for daily commuting. Low beam headlights leave a lot to be desired. Not the most comfortable driver's seat on long drives.

  • Top in Class Subcompact

I recently purchased the SX after test driving several other makes and models, including bigger classes such as the CR-V. I love the way sedans and wagons handle and wanted something as close as possible. The new Seltos comes pretty close and it’s very sporty and agile. The turbo has more than enough power. I’ve been using the stop-go feature in the Washington DC commute and it’s been driving itself up 395 in heavy stop and go traffic. The vehicle feels a lot more substantial than what the price would indicate. It’s an awesome vehicle and can’t be beat for the money.
