Expert 2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class review

Our expert's take
By Cars.com editors
Full article

What it is: Mercedes-Benz focuses largely on road-going manners with its GLE-Class SUV, but the iconic G-Class is a hard-core off-road machine that seats five people across two rows. The G-Class was Mercedes' first SUV, and it competes with the Land Rover Range Rover and Toyota Land Cruiser. The G550 uses a turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine rated at 416 horsepower. High-performance AMG variants are also available. A redesigned G-Class arrives for the 2019 model year.

A Red and Black Edition of the G550 is available.

AMG G63/G65
Mercedes offers high-performance versions of the G-Class in the form of the AMG G63 and AMG G65. Both models feature twin-turbocharged engines — the G63 a V-8 and the G65 a V-12 — that are hand-built. Both include a sport exhaust system, high-performance brakes and unique styling cues.

What’s Special

  • 563-hp, turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8 engine (G63)
  • 621-hp, turbocharged 6.0-liter V-12 (G65)
  • Seven-speed automatic transmission
  • Unique grille design
  • Red brake calipers
  • Side exhaust pipes

  • Most "Solid" and "Comfortable" vehicle driven

This is the most comfortable and secure four wheel drive vehicle I've ever driven. Yes it is "Pricey" but it's worth every penny.
