What it is: The original Mercedes CLS-Class revolutionized modern automotive design by promising the sporty dynamics of a coupe with a dash of sedan practicality. The four-door, four-seat CLS is available in two models: the CLS550 and the performance-oriented AMG CLS63. The CLS550 comes with a turbocharged 4.7-liter V-8, a nine-speed automatic transmission and a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive. The CLS63 packs a 5.5-liter V-8 and comes only with all-wheel drive.
Prime competitors include the Audi A7, BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe and Porsche Panamera. A redesigned CLS arrives for the 2019 model year.
A backup camera is now standard.
The AMG CLS63 performance car has all-wheel drive and is powered by a hand-built twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-8 engine that's rated at 577 horsepower.
