Expert 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross review

Our expert's take
By Cars.com Editors
Full article

What Is the 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross?

The Toyota Corolla Cross is a subcompact five-seat SUV that competes with similarly pint-size, budget-friendly rivals, including the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Trax, Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, Nissan Kicks and Volkswagen Taos. Based on the same platform used in the Corolla sedan and hatchback, the Corolla Cross comes standard with a 169-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine coupled to a continuously variable automatic transmission. All trims are available with front- or all-wheel drive.

The Corolla Cross is also available as a hybrid that comes standard with AWD and features a 196-hp gas-electric four-cylinder that returns an impressive EPA-rated 42 mpg in combined city/highway driving. The Corolla Cross Hybrid’s closest competitor is the Kia Niro; it offers plug-in hybrid and all-electric powertrains in addition to its regular hybrid powertrain, but all come only with FWD.

What’s New on the 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross?

The Corolla Cross and Corolla Cross Hybrid carry on largely unchanged for 2024. A Nightshade Edition joins the hybrid lineup; its features include black exterior trim, gloss-black 18-inch wheels, a small rear spoiler and a two-tone red-and-black cloth interior.

What Features in the 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross Are Most Important?

Standard features include:

  • 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Two USB ports
  • Automatic climate control
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Rear-seat reminder
  • Lane departure steering assist

Available features include:

  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Synthetic leather upholstery
  • Wireless charging pad
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Power liftgate
  • Moonroof
  • JBL audio system
  • Safe exit warning
  • Blind spot warning
  • Reverse automatic emergency braking

Should I Buy the 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross?

The Toyota Corolla Cross is a great value for anyone looking for an affordable small SUV that’s good on gas. It comes standard with many desirable features, including wireless smartphone connectivity. Every Corolla Cross is also equipped with Toyota’s Safety Sense suite of advanced driver aids.  What keeps the Corolla Cross from being great instead of merely good is the coarse, underwhelming four-cylinder used in the gas-only model. Upgrading to the more powerful (but pricier) Corolla Cross Hybrid delivers a slightly more refined driving experience in addition to the expected fuel-economy gains, but you’ll pay extra for those virtues.

  • The side mirror is mounted too low with a stop gap

The side mirror is mounted too low with a stop gap between mirror and door being less than 1/8 inch. When the mirror closes it sits so low and close to the door (unlike most other vehicles) damage is inevitable. My vehicle has a dent from the mirror and Toyota denies culpability in the flawed design. Toyota would not cover the damages nor would they address the faulty mounting. Most vehicles have side mirrors that are mounted above the top of the door with a larger stop gap for folding, which prevents damage to the door/window. Manufacturing issues with something so simple are a red flag.

This is the first time in my life in which I purchased a medium-priced car and feel each time I am in a parking lot that there is no other car around me that I would rather have. It's an incredible vehicle for the price, functional in every way, reliable, beautiful, and so enjoyable to drive.

  • A great buy!

The car has been great. It is not “beefy” if you are looking for a rugged SUV, but it has the performance for gentle off road trails/country driveways. It is very comfortable, and gas mileage around 30mpg. The interior space is good, not a ton of leg room in the back seat, but for my wife and I, and the dog kennel in the back, it is ideal. From a cost perspective, we couldn’t be happier. It was well within budget and we feel the bang for our buck is tops and it’s a Toyota so I’ll be able to write another review at 300k miles.
