Whether a certain segment of Porsche enthusiasts like it or not, the German performance brand’s bestselling vehicle is the Macan compact SUV. Offering a sportier driving experience than its competitors, along with seating for five in an elegant interior, the Macan’s lineup was expanded with a new T trim for the 2023 model year that further sharpens the SUV’s handling while also adding subtle styling tweaks and features. (Little changes for 2024.)

Related: 2023 Porsche Macan T Review: Sportier Doesn’t Always Mean Faster

Previously offered only on Porsche’s 718 and 911 coupes, the T trim adds exclusive cosmetic bits, including gloss-black exhaust tips and a dark gray roof spoiler, side mirrors and other accents. You also get larger, dark gray 20-inch wheels that are not available on the base trim level, along with suspension enhancements. What isn’t part of the package is more power than the base version.

Cars.com Detroit Bureau Chief Aaron Bragman spent a week with the latest addition to the Macan lineup, and you can get all the details of how that went by tapping the link above. For a quicker rundown, here are five things we like about the Porsche Macan T and three things we’re not so excited about.

Things We Like

1. Distinctive Style

Only the most devoted Porschephiles are likely to notice the subtle styling differences that set the Macan T apart from other trims. But the restrained use of dark trim and larger 20-inch wheels in place of the 19-inch wheels on lesser trims lend a bit more aggressive look to further separate the Macan from competitors that include the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC.

2. Built for the Twisties

The Macan sits closer to the pavement than an average SUV, which helps lower the center of gravity for better handling. The Macan T takes things a step further, adding an adaptive suspension that helps deliver more agility and responsiveness without a penalty in ride comfort. Terrific steering feel and braking performance are part of the package, as well. And if that’s not enough, an adaptive air suspension with stiffer anti-roll bars is available.

3. Cozy Cabin

The cabin is not what most people would consider overly spacious, but it offers decent room up front and is extremely well made with top-quality materials. The front seats are firm and aggressively bolstered, and the Macan T gets an exclusive combination of fabric and leather upholstery with contrast stitching on the dash, doors and seats. The rear seat is not as spacious, but cargo room is decent for a compact SUV.

4. Informative Instrumentation

The three big dials in front of the driver offer a clean, informative design that’s appropriate for a vehicle with sporting intentions. The layout includes a conventional speedometer and tachometer, as well as a reconfigurable digital gauge that can provide a variety of information.

5. Boost Button

The Macan T gets a couple of tricks up its sleeve to maximize power from its turbocharged four-cylinder engine. A sport mode provides increased powertrain response, while a steering-wheel button can really crank things up for 30 seconds to make highway on-ramps that much more entertaining.

More From Cars.com:

Things We Don’t Like

1. Touch Controls

Porsche opted to forgo physical controls almost entirely in the Macan T in favor of touch-sensitive surfaces on the center screen and console. Both require taking your eyes off the road more than physical controls, and the center console buttons are small and easily washed out in bright sunlight. The dark, glossy surfaces also tend to get covered in fingerprints.

2. No Added Zoot

The Macan T gets by with the same 261-horsepower, turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission used in the base trim. While not exactly a slouch, it’s 0-60 mph acceleration time of 5.8 seconds is not particularly quick by current standards. The trade-off is a savings of 129 pounds over the front wheels compared to the V-6 of the Macan S, which helps with balance and agility.

3. Pricey Extras

In typical Porsche fashion, you have to pay extra for some features often found as standard equipment with other vehicles. The base price for 2024 starts at $68,150 (including destination), but it doesn’t include things like power seats, keyless touch entry, lane departure warning or a moonroof. All of these are available, of course, and the a la carte menu enables buyers to keep the price down by skipping features not desired.

  • Good with caveats

Bought 2023 Macan T. I traded in my aging 911 for it. I did not buy another 911 because they have become too big and expensive. The Macan T is a fun car to drive if you are actively trying to drive it. The back seats are tight. The PCM is frequently confounding or crashes and won’t play any media unless you stop the car, turn it off then open the door close the door and restart it. The fit and finish is excellent. The upgraded seats are good. I can’t activate the around view monitor unless I put it into reverse. The dealer wants 300.00 to connect the my Porsche app on iPhone to the car. Porsche corporate is helpful and has normal humans that answer the phone. The PDK is fun and the exhaust has some fun subtle sounding pops. It’s like a refined hot hatch car but not really a great highway car. The base stereo is plenty good enough. Styling is top notch. Adaptive cruise works but needs supervision while using. The rear wiper appears cheap and flimsy. Should have been mounted from the top of the rear glass. The guages in the day are too dark not lit up and hard to see. The back up camera has poor resolution and has a strange perspective making it less useful. It’s a fun, clever designed expensive car with tech flaws that you have to overlook to enjoy the car. If you buy a slightly used one from a Porsche dealer you can get your warranty close to 6 years. Service is expensive probably to pay for giving you a loaner.

  • regret

Just a not good experience and a poor value. The sunroof visor isn't blackout, you can't close the back hatch from the driver door button, 360 camera activation button is buried in a confusing head unit, when the park assist camera does come on and it starts beeping you're too close to something, it doesn't show you where the problem is, you have to hold the memory seat button the entire time the seat is adjusting, the sun visor doesn't pull out to make it longer, tiny apple car play screen, 3 distinct and loud rattles, AC vent part broke at 1500 miles, disappointing dealer experience, very expensive oil changes. Need I say more? I regret my decision to buy the Macan S. Oh yes it does handle fantastic and a $250 pedal commander solve the anemic engine but there is nothing else good about this vehicle. No more Porsche cars for me.

  • PCM Still Deficient

The Porsche Communications Management (PCM) system is a huge disappointment. Many, many issues from voice commands to telephone integration. My Porsche account required new pairing codes and again shows the weakness in general with Porsche electronics.

  • I love this car

I absolutely love the way this car drives. You almost forget it is an SUV. Interior amenities and technology are lacking compared to comparable vehicles. There is a lack of good storage in the cabin. The options a pricy as in the Porsche tradition. You forget these things once you start driving. Since I got it, I figured a way out to make my commute an additional 5 miles each way. My purchase experience with Redwood City Porsche was a joy thanks to my sales associate Sam Pham. I always look forward to my next drive!

  • Not a bad car at all!!

New to the Porsche family with a 2023, fairly loaded Macan base. I have had the vehicle for a month now without complaints. I have owned 40+ cars in my lifetime including Audi, Benz, and domestics. I live in Chicago and this is the perfect car for the city and my occasional jaunts to Michigan and Wisconsin. The driving experience does not compare to any other car I've owned. Tight, solid, quiet, and a joy to drive. Sure the connection to my iPhone is not working but never had an interest in connecting my car to the phone. For 75k, not bad. Don't need the speed or prestige of a T or GTS. So far, pleased with my purchase, kids love it too!!!

  • Macan S: Overpriced with Stone Age PCM

Beautiful car, which I purchased from Porsche Bethesda on 10/10. However, the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) is prehistoric and non-stop problems. I've had to hard wire to the USB port as the Bluetooth while recognized does not work. Where do I start: Radio comes on unless you turn the PCM off; No full manual; PCNA expects the user to use their phone or PC. Manual is so pathetic it odes not include where the 12V adapter (for dash cam in my case) is located. Not identified nor in the owner's manual written or digital. (It's hidden under plastic with no identification). Very few safety features and the one they have a pathetic. Bose sound which many await an amp does not have controls for the sound such as an equalizer. The manual is incomplete; as if Porsche's 13 city MPG might go to 12.999999 if a full manual were provided. Overall, my MSRP $83,380 Macan S is about $15K overpriced. I will sell when my BMW M440i convertible arrives (ordered last weekend) and I will go back to a non-performance Volvo XC40 with top notch safety features for SUV duties. Don't wait your money or time (orders now 4+ months and now Bose only available with GTS). It's hard to enjoy the vehicle when you can't pay one's music or spend 5-10 minutes when I get in the vehicle to get the PCM to work.
