Sebrings and summer are like ice cream and children: There’s hardly a better way to enjoy warm weather.

The Sebring in question is Chrysler’s four-passenger ragtop which now accounts for about one of three convertibles sold. It replaced the LeBaron in 1996, and since then it has proven to be extremely popular with open-air drivers.

While mechanically similar to the Sebring coupe, and built on the same front-wheel-drive, 106-inch wheelbase platform as the Dodge Stratus/Chrysler Cirrus, the convertible has its own unique body.

There are three models, the JX, JXi and fully equipped Limited. The JX has a 150-horsepower, 4-cylinder engine, while the others use a 168-horsepower, 2.5-liter V6.

For 1999, DaimlerChrysler says model choices and options have been simplified to provide better value. Changes include the addition of low-power airbags, the winged Chrysler badge and new colors.

Our JXi test car had the V6, anti-lock brakes and the very attractive 16-inch alloy wheels. These larger wheels and bigger tires not only look better but improve steering response and agility both. The Sebring is not a sports car, but it does have a certain flair that makes it fun.

The V6 engine and automatic transmission are clearly the best choice. Chrysler’s AutoStick, which can be shifted manually, is an option.

Traction control is standard on the Limited but not available on the other two models.

Probably the best thing about the Sebring, aside from the ease with which the top can be raised or lowered, is its ability to haul four people in reasonable comfort, a task that many convertibles cannot accomplish. While the back seat is a tad narrow, legroom is certainly adequate. The moderate-sized trunk will hold enough luggage for two people on a weeklong trip.

Putting down the power top takes almost no effort and very little time, which means you will use it frequently. The cab-forward architecture means the cockpit never feels crowded, and the steeply slanted windshield provides good protection from windblast with the top down. With the side windows up and the top down it is possible to have a normal conversation at 60 mph.

The top is lined to absorb sound but it is still noisier than a sedan, which is to be expected.

A glass rear window and built-in defogger are standard.

The body structure has been reinforced to compensate for the lack of a top, but I could feel some minor shakes and wiggles through the steering wheel on choppy pavement.

The front seats are wide and accommodating, yet have sufficient lateral and lumbar support to make them comfortable. Seatbelts built into the seats are a nice touch since they always fit right now matter how the seat is adjusted. Getting into the back seat is less cumbersome, too.

Instrumentation is simple and easy to read, and the radio and heating controls are tucked together in a center pod. Typical of Chrysler products, cupholders are generous and within eas y reach.

Low-beam headlights were not very bright.

Price

The base price of our test car was $26,285. The only option was the built-in garage door opener and automatic rear view mirror.

The sticker price was $26,995.

  • Bought used and took 5500 mile trip

    It ALMOST made the 5500 mile road trip with no problems... with only 300 miles to go the lower ball joint broke / $750 towing & Repair cost - otherwise the 110000 mile Convertible ran and drove well

  • Good car. Problematic but fixable.

    Good car. Problematic but fixable. Stylish and good for sunny state. Very low, watch bumps. Buy if you want a car - convertible. Attention-grabber!

  • 99 Chrysler Sebring convertible

    I love it! It's small, reliable and easy to maintain. I love the reclining room. My kids enjoyed that the most!

  • Sleek ride

    I absolutely loved the sleek body style when I owned my Sebring. It has serious horsepower, handling is great and has some great features like the sunroof and the dash controls are easy to use without taking your eyes off the road. The down side is the seats aren't comfortable for long drives (road trips) and it's difficult to make tight turns. The outside door handles are plastic and broke frequently from being out in the blazing hot sun. Because of how low it is to the ground it doesn't do well with large speed bumps or big dips in the road. Scraping bottom is very common. I also got into the habit of backing into parking spaces that had a curb or concrete parking slab because if you get too close you can tear up the front end of the car. This car excels with looks, handling, horsepower and fuel mileage. It's not very practical for much else than showing off.

  • Great runaround 3rd car

    Bought this as a 3rd car and a backup. It`s very roomy inside for a small coupe and has been great. I like the smooth 2.5 V6. Weak design in the front suspension, but it`s easy to replace parts.

  • Been an amazing car, but..

    I bought my 1999 Chrysler Sebring JXI in September of 2014 with my EX boyfriend at the time for our family. I still own my baby today and she has been a treat honestly to me. My favorite car company is Chrysler. Although I have owned a 1996 Ford Explorer, 2000 Ford Mustang, 2007 Pontiac Solstice and a 2004 Buick Rendezvous before splitting with boyfriend. I must say that my Sebring has been my most favorite car i have owned! I would be lying if I said I don't miss my explorer because the Chrysler has had an oil leak, and coolant problems since I bought it! I plan on fixing the problems and praying the car last 50.000+ more miles! at the moment it has 94.000 miles!

  • Fabulous Car!

    I love this car! Bought it new in 1999 and it currently (2012) has 92,000 miles. I've had to invest very little for repairs: --recently replaced the thermostat ($140) and --headlamp switch or relay(?) ($75); --It's received regular maintenance, including oil & filter changes every 4-5k miles; brakes; battery, etc. I find it very comfortable (driver's seat has great, adjustable lumbar support) and road handling is superb. I have very few issues, but they are: --squeaky brakes, usually when weather is a little damp; --the windshield is low, so a tall driver may have to crouch forward to see a stoplight for example - I'm 5'6", it's fine for me; --when the top is up, the blindspot is fairly large - not a problem, I just have to be diligent with lane changes and backing-up --cup holders, as another reviewer mentioned, the placement on the forward, center console makes them unusable anything other than a standard-size soda can or bottle. I love this car so much, that (even though the paint was in excellent condition), when I needed to repair a fender scrape, I opted to have the whole car repainted, because I didn't care for the color. I have no intentions of selling or replacing the car for many more years.

  • got more miles w/the less repairs then any car I e

    great value nice loking car have 180,000 miles very few repairs I know chrysler gets someknocks but not this particualr car mayeb i got very lucky looking for another

  • Very good used car

    This car is my first. It has never given me problems. It is wonderful to look at and although it is not a sports car it still has decent power behind it. A fantastic first car.

  • NEED TO KNOW!!!!!!!

    Just to let you know, when you go to buy these cars, you should but one that has been nicely used... Unlike the first review(with 23,000 miles) you shoule get one that has been driven everyday with about at least 50,000 miles or more due to the fact that if these cars sit in a garage, they tend to go really bad really fast... I would know because my grandmother did that with her Sebring and it totally died on her one day and the phrase "total internal destruction" was used to describe the condition of the engine.

  • 1999 Chrysler Sebring Convertible

    Purchased this vehicle with 23,000 miles in 2002. Great car in the beginning, but lots of problems since 2005. Repairs usually require tearing apart a large portion of the vehicle - even for usually easy repairs. *Dash lights went out ($500 to fix) *Radio no longer works *CD player no longer works *Right passenger door only opens from the outside *A/C does not work *Vehicle turns off while driving (very dangerous on the free-way!) Not sure if I got a lemon or if these problems are common with the Sebring. Has certainly soured my experience with Chrysler.

  • This car makes me feel good about what I'm driving

    I have driven this car for almost a year now. I love the way it handles and feels while I'm on the road. Others must like the way it looks becuase it's a real head turner. It's a great car for just an adult night out on the town as well as packing up the kids and the dog for a drive out to the park. There is more room on the inside than you assume. I would however liked to of had a better place to put my drink. While there is a cup holder , I like the bigger drinks and this cup would not fit. I did find a place in the middle console to wedge my drink without spilling it, but would rather of had that use for an arm rest. I would and have reccommend this car to friends and family. I let my sister and my mother drive it for the day over the summer so they could have the top down. They are both in love with the style and the comfort and in the process of looking for there new Sebring convertible.
