Rough start for 6 weeks

It took 6 weeks and three trips to the dealership to correct a faulty front parking sensor that randomly showed a distracting error message on both driver info screens. I still miss my 5th generation Explorers. Mine is the Platinum trim so it’s loaded. I didn’t need all the options but I wanted a V/6 because I tow often cross-country. Ford says the I4 can tow 5300 lbs. but I doubt it in the mountains. The brakes are weak compared to my last Explorer. Rear and side views are more difficult too. I do my own maintenance and this 2020 Explorer is challenging. Lifting the front for tire rotation requires two hydraulic jacks and pinch weld pucks because there is no crossmember reliable enough for lifting. A plastic oil pan and oil plug....really Ford? Worst of all, a cartridge oil filter! I’m 70 years old and haven’t seen a cartridge oil filter since the early sixties when spin-on filters became popular. I’m also concerned about carbon build up in the cylinder head combustion areas and valves because of an over pressurized PCV system with the twin turbo chargers. I drive very conservatively so maybe I’ll be okay? Time and a bore scope will tell me. Like many reviewers here I think the transmission is wonky. First to second shift is at times sloppy and drawn out. Other times too quick. The driving modes do change all shifting characteristics. Tow haul is my favorite by far for obvious reasons but I like it even when not towing. I like the automatic noticeable downshifting. Overall the very best advice for owners of the previous generation Ford Explorers is to thoroughly test drive the 2020-2021 models. They are nothing like the 5th generation Explorer, nothing! This might be the very last new Explorer I purchase.

Best ride of the SUV's I've owned.

This SUV has surprised me on all fronts great ride and handling. The twin turbo 4 cylinder exceeds all my expectations on performance. I was skeptical at first thinking I needed a V6 but not at all now after driving for a year.

The worst car I’ve ever owned!

Transmission on this car is no good! It has dumped the trans fluid 2 times and has had multiple transmission failures and irratic hard shifting. Multiple repairs have been made in less than a year of owning the car. Stay far away from this new 2020 Ford Explorer it’s not the same as the older models! I’ve owned 3 explorers the newest one is the worst vehicle I’ve ever owned!
