Vehicle Overview
The 2007 GMC Canyon’s engines get a boost in horsepower, and General Motors promises improved shift quality for the pickup. There are also two new shades of blue and new red exterior paint options.

GMC introduced the Canyon pickup truck for the 2004 model year. Designed from the ground up, the Canyon is similar to Chevrolet’s Colorado pickup. Both were larger than the previous compact models they replaced — the GMC Sonoma and Chevrolet S-10.

GMC’s intent with the Canyon was to provide greater power, space and functionality than the Sonoma offered. Two inline engines are based on the Vortec 4.2-liter six-cylinder that was introduced in the company’s Envoy sport utility vehicle. “Inline technology produces an engine with exceptional power, smoothness and world-class fuel efficiency,” said product manager Jerome Thiebaud.

An optional sport suspension features 18-inch wheels. The CD player also gains MP3 capability, and box side steps are available on regular and extended cab models. A sunroof is optional, and a leather package is offered on extended cab trucks. GM’s Passenger Sensing System airbag technology is now standard.

Available with rear- or four-wheel drive, Canyons come in regular cab, extended cab and Crew Cab body styles. Two additional suspension packages are available: heavy-duty and off-road.

Exterior
For 2007, Sport Blue, Midnight Blue Metallic and Sonoma Red Metallic are new color options.

A distinctive front end that features a prominent red GMC logo on the grille gives the Canyon a strong family resemblance to other GMC products. The grille has a chrome surround and dark smoke-gray crossbars. Overhangs are short, and GMC promotes the body’s “chiseled” appearance.

Built on a ladder-type frame, the Canyon uses rack-and-pinion steering. Rear-drive models have an independent front suspension and a live rear axle, while four-wheel-drive and High-Stance Off-Road models use a torsion bar front suspension. All Canyons have front stabilizer bars. An optional ZQ8 sport suspension features a rear stabilizer bar, sport-tuned shocks and quick-ratio power steering. Canyons with the ZQ8 package also have new 18-inch aluminum wheels and a 2-inch-lower ride height. A 6-foot cargo box is standard, but Crew Cab models get a 5-foot box. Fifteen-inch aluminum wheels are standard, and fog lamps are optional.

Interior
GM says the Canyon’s interior trim has been revised to include chrome accents and is available in Ebony for 2007.

Regular cab pickups contain a standard 60/40-split bench seat upholstered in cloth or vinyl, but reclining bucket seats are available. Four-door extended cab trucks have two forward-facing rear seats with under-seat storage. Crew Cab models contain front bucket seats upholstered in cloth or leather and a 60/40-split flat-folding backseat that holds three adults.

Options include heated leather front bucket seats, an in-dash six-CD changer, and an electrochromatic inside mirror with a compass and an outside temperature gauge. GM’s OnStar communication system and XM Satellite Radio are available.

Under the Hood
The Canyon can be equipped with a 2.9-liter Vortec four-cylinder that produces 185 horsepower and 190 pounds-feet of torque, or a 3.7-liter inline-five-cylinder that generates 242 hp and 242 pounds-feet of torque. A five-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic transmission is available. Both engines operate with electronic throttle control, variable valve timing and coil-on-plug ignition.

Canyons equipped with four-wheel drive offer electronic shift-on-the-fly capability via a dashboard-mounted switch. On two-wheel-drive models, a standard traction control system includes a locking differential; this feature is optional on four-wheel-drive versions. Canyons come with a choice of three rear axle ratios.

Safety
A tire pressure monitoring system is standard for 2007. Four-wheel antilock brakes and dual-stage front airbags with a passenger-side occupancy sensor are standard. Side curtain airbags are optional. All seating positions have three-point safety belts.

  • Great mid-sized truck

Great midsized sized truck, excellent gas mileage, plenty of room and power, drives nice, excellent vehicle for a student as it has extra space behind driver but you cannot cram a bunch of kids into it. Handles well in all kinds of weather including snow.

  • Attractive but heavy duty 4x4 truck

Bought used and very low mileage Canyon originally delivered in Canada. It is an SLE off-road configuration with the larger 5 cyl engine. Only one problem in 3 years - had a bad connector in the wiring harness and the local dealer fixed it at an outrageous price for the small amount of time and materials it took to fix. Won't use them again if I can help it.

  • 2007 Canyon 4cyl. 5 speed

Bought with 50k miles now at 96K. Only replaced water pump and brakes. When climbing drop to 4th gear for plenty of power. ZQ8 suspension, low profile with 18" wheels, handles great. Easy loading, I haul motorcycles often, never a problem. A heavy clutch, so a strong left leg is needed, mpg 18-24

This is my first truck and I love it. I have around 52,000 miles on it and have had no problems. I have the four cylinder (which has plenty of power) and get about 18 around town and in the mid 20s on the highway. I have had the truck for over 2 years now and it comes in handy all of the time. It works great in the snow and off road. It can also easily pull other vehicles out of ditches (which I have done numerous times).

  • awsome truck with an appetite

i bought my truck used with only 25,000 miles and have put about 45,000 on mine well all i really like going off road in it with a full tank. when you hit the gas you hit your gas tank to. its alright on gas on the highway when you put the cruse control on it will get about 20 to 25 mpg but when you get in the city you wont get over 15 with the in line 5. the 4X4 is GREAT for getting you out of ruts it will put you in one when going to fill it up.

  • Good, Dependable Truck

I bought a new 2007 Canyon in December 2007. I drove this little truck for three years and it was a very solid truck. I bought the 2 wheel drive, regular cab work truck version. I drove it through snow, ice, etc with very few problems and it had the four cylinder engine, so it got great gas mileage. These are great little trucks. I recently traded it for a used Colorado. The only reason I traded was I really need a four wheel drive for the places I have to travel. I stuck with these mid-sized GM trucks because they are really great trucks for the money.

  • best small truch I have had

I like driving my extended cab SLE Z85 2wd as much as my 525I BMW. Only have 6000km as yet but have had no problems. Tank goodness it has cruise controll or I would be getting tickets. The 2.9 4 cylinder has more power than I need.

  • Purchased sight unseen !

Bought my Canyon regular cab sight unseen, expecting the same quality I have enjoyed with my previous GM vehicles. The Canyon is Large, not the small truck I was led to believe it is. The speedometer is partially hidden by the steering wheel. There is no Oil Pressure guage. Don't know why an automatic has a Tach Meter, I've only needed them on standard transmissions. The seat is uncomfortable, and their is only 1 choice for the SL model. The climate controls are in an awkward position to use, requiring the driver to lean down to be reached. There is no console to hold a pair of sunglasses, pad & pencil, etc. The cup holders are fixed to the seat front, and I discovered drink cups fit loosely enough that they can tip over, spilling. The idle speed is such that the truck goes to 20 MPH without having to step on the gas. Perhaps I was spoiled by my GMC Sonoma, it was easy handling, comfortable, pleasant to drive, and size that fit my needs. If I had test driven the Canyon, I would still own my Sonoma.

  • Great Truck

This was the first truck i purchased. I had driven trucks before, and compared with the Ranger at my work, this truck is far superior. I have owned the truck for almost six months and haven't had any problems. I love the truck and wouldn't change anything about it. I'm averaging about 20 miles per gallon, and the 5 cylinder has some decent power. It responds well when I need to get around slower traffic. For a truck, it has a great ride quality. I would recommend this truck to anyone who is looking for a great midsized truck.

  • Great Truck - One you should look at

I am new to the midsized truck world as I have owned full sized trucks for many years. I was hesitant to go with a truck that has a 5 cylinder engine, but it does have good power with a smooth delivery when on the road. The truck feels rock solid and handles quickly. I think what I like the most about this truck is the way it handles 4WD situations. It gets me to where I want to go and I really have not put the truck to its limits, even on some serious 4WD areas. Lets just say the Z71 package does a great job. I will have to get used to less power as compared to a full sized truck, otherwise, this is a great truck for all around use.
