Expert 2011 Jeep Liberty review

our expert's take
Our expert's take

our expert's take

Vehicle Overview

The Jeep Liberty, which is related to the Dodge Nitro, comes in Sport, Renegade and Limited editions. One of the more interesting features in the five-seat Jeep Liberty small SUV is its optional Sky Slider movable canvas roof. Liberty competitors include the Nissan Xterra and Suzuki Grand Vitara.

New for 2011

For 2011, besides the new Renegade trim level, there are no significant changes for 2011.

Exterior

The Liberty features Jeep’s traditional seven-slot grille and trapezoidal fender flares that enhance the vehicle’s side profile. Unlike many panoramic sunroofs offered today, Jeep’s Sky Slider roof is made of canvas rather than glass. The fabric roof folds on itself as it opens, and Jeep says the top is leak-proof. Exterior features include:

  • Standard automatic headlamps
  • Standard body-colored grille, front and rear bumpers, and moldings
  • Standard remote keyless entry
  • Optional express-up windows
  • Standard power-operated and heated side mirrors that can fold
  • 16-, 17- or 18-inch wheels
  • Optional roof rails
  • Optional full-open canvas roof system
  • Optional chrome grille

Interior

The Liberty’s interior features a large floor console with cupholders, armrest and a storage area with a removable top tray.

Both the left and right rear panels in the cargo area have tie-down loops for securing items to the load floor. The left rear panel houses a concealed compartment for jack storage and tools. Interior features include:

  • Standard power locks, windows and mirrors
  • Standard floormats
  • Stain-resistant cloth or leather upholstery available
  • Optional heated, powered front seats
  • Optional leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls
  • Optional hands-free communication system
  • Optional navigation system

Under the Hood

The Liberty has a standard fuel shut-off system that turns off fuel when the vehicle is decelerating. There’s also a standard fuel-saving indicator that lights up in the odometer to notify the driver when the vehicle is being driven in a fuel-efficient manner.

All models come with a four-speed automatic transmission. When properly equipped, the Liberty can tow up to 5,000 pounds. Mechanical features include:

  • 210-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6 with 235 pounds-feet of torque
  • Four-speed automatic transmission
  • Trailer tow package that includes a full-size spare, Class III trailer hitch and trailer-sway control
  • Rear- or four-wheel drive

Safety

Safety features include:

  • Standard side curtain airbags
  • Standard all-disc antilock braking system
  • Standard electronic stability control with electronic roll mitigation and all-speed traction control
  • Standard smart key that immobilizes the engine in a theft attempt
  • Optional parking assist system includes a sonar-based warning system with audible and visual alerts

  • My best car yet!

This Jeep is undoubtedly the best of the cars that my fiance and I have owned. In the two short years since we bought it, we've taken it to southern Florida and back three times without any trouble. It's been reliable and for me, pretty comfortable. Love our Jeep!

  • Most reliable car I’ve owned

This vehicle met all my needs and has lots of space. I have dogs that ride in my car and it’s easy to clean and has a comfortable amount of space for them. All wheel drive is also super great to get around in the winter and I love it. Best car ever.

  • Impressive Jeep Vehicle

I have the Limited model 4X2 which is otherwise loaded with options and bought from my brother who’s daughter had since new and currently has 119,000 miles. After detailing the vehicle which didn’t take as much time as I normally would on a 8 year old car to bring it to my cosmetic standards, I realized that this vehicle’s exterior paint quality is impressive for being Black in color as well as other styling components being well made. I admired the vehicle after I put 8 solid hours into it and said to myself “What a kick “Butt” looking Jeep” - I have the Limited model (loaded otherwise) and bought from my brother who’s daughter had since new, currently has 119,000 miles. After detailing the vehicle which didn’t take as much time as I normally would on a 8 year old car to bring it to my cosmetic standards, I realized that this vehicle’s exterior paint quality is impressive for being Black in color. Yes you need to push the gas pedal a bit more just to get it moving from a stand still in a parking lot as an example, but come on, it’s 5,000 pounds and all muscle. Fuel mileage is HORRIBLE and worse then my 2015 E Class Mercedes V6 which shocked me. When I first took it out on the road, I could immediately feel the the solid all around quality of the suspension. I really like the thick leather wrapped steering wheel. The “Infinity” entertainment system along with the Touch Screen is an all around great system and very responsive with no lag when using the touch screen. The sound quality is incredible and the factory Sub Wofer mounted in the rear gives you the sense of being in a dance club. I do my own general maintenance and this Jeep is real easy to work on. I’ve read that the Transmission can go out around 100,000 miles but my brother has done regular service 2X previously and I just did it when I took possession at 119,000 miles. The leather seats are poor quality but I use Maguire's products to keep the seat surfaces from abnormal cracking and so far they are holding up. The dash has a small screen to scroll through different parts of the vehicle’s status like tire pressure on all wheels, etc.. The designers/engineers spent a lot of time on building a solid vehicle. It’s not a Toyota and you have to expect a higher repair rate, but if you keep on top of important general & regular maintenance, you will have a higher rate of reliability. I only use Mobil 1 Oil and Mobil 1 Oil Filters which is the most critical service of any vehicle. dal a bit more just to get it moving from a stand still in a parking lot as an example, but come on, it’s 5,000 pounds and all muscle. • By far the worst modern car I have ever driven

My wife picked out this car and got it before we got married but it is a Limited Jet Liberty and it was $30,000. This car is a trash heap. I can't believe the people at Jeep gave this car the greenlight for production. It is loud, horridly slow, cramped, has poor quality materials, and it is just an all around bad car. It now has 120,000 miles and it hasn't been horribly unreliable but it has already had a new transmission and a new radio which is pitiful. The front seats have absolutely no foot room and ours is a 2 wheel drive model so its not like there's a transfer case under the floor taking up space. The ride is atrocious, I have a 1993 Hummer H1 and it rides better than this hunk of junk. The engine absolutely HATES to rev. It sounds like its about to explode even at 3k rpm. Another weird thing is how much throttle it takes to get the thing to start moving. Most cars start to "creep" when you let off the brake but this Liberty requires some pedal to move at all. Oh, The driver seat also had to be re-upholstered already and my wife is a small person so that should not have been necessary. I drive a 2004 Lexus GX and it has 168,000 miles on it and it is in MUCH better condition than this 2011 Liberty that has not been driven hard at all. Save your money and buy something else, they really are that bad.

  • Proud new Jeep Owner

I've only had the vehicle for about a week, but I am pleasantly surprised by all aspects of it so far. I'm looking forward to using the 4wd during the upcoming winter. One has to wonder, why was this model discontinued?
