Expert 2005 Kia Spectra5 review

our expert's take

After driving around comparing cars for the past year, the Kia Spectra 5 is like having a plain vanilla ice cream cone; no nuts, no toppings, no cherry on top. There’s not much to this car and there’s nothing exciting to write about. I’m sorry to say it, but it’s just another car.

The only thing I can commend the Spectra 5 for is that it has accommodating headroom. My tall, long-legged husband doesn’t look like a sardine packed in its tin; he actually fits and is happy his shaved head doesn’t rub against the top of the car.

As for me, I can’t find anything particularly outstanding. The cargo space in the back is very small, just enough room to fit the stroller and not much else. The lack of cubbies and storage compartments has me piling junk on the passenger seat where it all slides off when I hit the brakes.

One thing Mother Proof mom reviewers have voiced strongly is the choice of leather seats over cloth. Sure, it’s less than pleasant when my skin sticks to it in the summertime, but the benefits out number the negatives. Like that fact that leather is super easy to clean; just wipe it down with a cloth.

There’s nothing worse than the smell of spoiled milk that has been fermenting in the cloth seats of a car. Trust me, I know this smell all too well. I deal with it every day I get into my own car, which has cloth seats. I’ve scrubbed it with those oxy cleaners and the smell returns. I’m going to have to cough up the money to get my car professionally cleaned to remove the stains of spilled milk. Why didn’t I get leather? Well, some cars just don’t offer it, like the Spectra 5. Be prepared for stains and strange smells when the kids infiltrate this car.

The controls for the music and AC are nicely organized in one area, all reachable from the driver’s seat. While there are six cupholders for this 5-passenger car, two of them are in the front doors (typical), two are in the center console (good) and two are in the back of the center console near the floor (not so good).

So, yawn, it’s just another car. Until I look at the price sticker and realize how affordable the Kia Spectra 5 is, not to mention its high gas mileage. Then I discover the quaint tissue holder in the center console. Ah, things are looking up. There’s nice space for a tissue box and plenty of room for some CDs and other stuff. OK, that’s a plus, but it won’t have me racing to the dealership to buy the car, even if I catch the sniffles.

  • Great reliable car.

I bought this car used from one owner that took good care of this car. Now that it’s mine, I’ve been happy with the overall performance and easy maintenance to keep it running. Mechanically speaking, I say it’s easy and cheap to buy and replace the parts. Only issue it had when I bought it was the tps sensor and air idle sensor. I replaced them and modified the engine a little bit and the car has been running great and still runs like new. I thought about selling it because of the manual transmission but from the results I’ve been getting, I think I’ll keep it for couple more years or until it stops running definitely.

  • Great first car!

I’ve had this as my first car and it is great. Runs really well and has lasted me for over a year and I bought it at 194,000 miles and I use it daily. The only problem I’ve experienced is a problem with the gas tank.

  • 2005 Kia Spectra 5

We purchased this car in 2005 for my daughter after her car was totaled in an accident. At the time she wanted a Kia Sportage but none were available. However, she has been driving this car for 12 years with no major problems. The only thing she had to do was just routine maintenance. This was a wonderful buy. I would recommend this car to young drivers for their first car.

  • The Best Decision I made!

I bought this car beginning of 2006, because I needed to have something more comfortable than a sport car. Everyone said I was crazy to switch my luxury sport car for this fun sporty funny looking car.. I was looking for something that would not give me a headache and comfortable to fit the needs of my family. Best choice I have made.. it will almost be 10 years and I have never had any problems other than a gas tank problem that was fixed. Runs perfect!!

  • Keeps Going & Going

I bought my Spectra5 new in 2005. Now after 10 years & 250,000 miles, it is still running like a champ. Except tires & batteries, the only issues have been - new starter (changed under warranty), new rotors & calipers, and recently, new MAF & O2 sensors (after it started running rough). I wouldn't recommend it for long trips, but for travelling 100 miles per day, it was a perfect choice. It has enough oomph for passing and the handling is crisp (even after 250,000 miles)! It has been an enjoyable car. I plan on keeping it through 2015 and then consider trading it in...

  • 2005 kia spectra5

This car is a pretty nice looking car. But after owning this car I don't really think I will ever get another kia. Fuel economy is worse than most mid size sedans, about 18 city and 25 hwy. on cold days when its under 15 degrees F. the car won't start up right away, materials throughout the car (inside and out) are just darn right CHEAP! Slow acceleration. I have the kia 16" oem wheel, and 3 of the 4 wheels got bent due to pot holes, now I had to get aftermarket wheels. Expect to always dump money into maintenance, not allot, but it will add up. It seems like every other month something breaks down on it. I have owned this car for 3 years and have put 30k miles on it. Car only has 110k miles on it. I expected a better quality car from kia, i guess I was wrong.

I've had my car for over a year now and out of the 2 other cars I've had this is by far my favorite. It drives really good and I love the hatchback style. I will definitly have this car for a while.
