2024 Land Rover Range Rover Velar review: Our expert's take

What Is the 2024 Land Rover Range Rover Velar?

Few SUVs are capable of turning heads like the sleek Land Rover Range Rover Velar. Despite having first gone on sale back in 2018, the Velar maintains a head-turning design that’s complemented by a choice of two powertrains, standard all-wheel drive and an elegant cabin that comfortably seats five. The standard 247-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder is efficient but underwhelming when passing power is needed. Optional is a turbocharged, 3.0-liter mild-hybrid six-cylinder that delivers 394 hp and an estimated 0-60 mph time of 5.2 seconds. Competing against the Velar are rivals like the BMW X6, Maserati Levante and Porsche Macan.

What’s New on the 2024 Land Rover Range Rover Velar?

A revamped dashboard is reaching for a minimalist look, with an 11.4-inch touchscreen replacing the previous dual-screen setup that featured physical buttons and dials. The infotainment system now uses Land Rover’s latest Pivi Pro software, which includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus over-the-air updates. Outside, revised headlamps, grille and bumpers bring the Velar’s look more in line with Land Rover’s latest design language. The powertrain lineup is pared down to two choices thanks to the previously available 335-hp inline-six being discontinued.

Should I Buy the 2024 Land Rover Range Rover Velar?

If making a style statement is important to you, the Velar is definitely worth a test drive. With its swept-back shape and elegant cabin, the Velar surprises by also being very capable off paved surfaces. It boasts up to 9.9 inches of ground clearance when equipped with an available air suspension. Performance from the standard turbo four-cylinder is tepid, but the optional inline-six adds noticeably more sizzle. Just be careful when adding options, because even a base Velar is a pricey proposition among mid-size luxury SUVs.
