Luxury’s Missing Ingredients

With options, the price topped $70,000. But it didn’t feel like a $70,000 car, and that was my problem with the Ultra Luxury version of the 2006 Lexus LS 430 sedan.

Seventy-thousand bucks is heady territory, a place where buyers expect more than fine quality and reliability, long the hallmarks of the Lexus Division and its parent company, Toyota Motor Corp.

Certainly, buyers of $70,000 cars expect comfortable rear seats. They should be able to ferry fussy family members and friends without hearing gripes about the back seats being “too small,” or being “nicely upholstered, but a pain in the. . . .”

I heard such complaints from rear-seat passengers on different road trips through the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions.

I heard it from people with big and small bottoms, from folks old and young, male and female. I heard it so much, I decided to sit back there myself — but not for more than 20 miles. They were right.

The leather was perfect. The stitching was impeccable. But the Lexus LS 430’s rear seats and my rear end were in constant disagreement.

The bottom-oriented discord brought this query from my wife: “Are you sure this is a $70,000 car?”

I was sure. I had the sticker and all related pricing information. The base price was $56,525. The price as tested was $71,590, including $13,570 for the “Ultra Luxury” package “with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control,” $800 for the “SP Euro-tuned Sport Suspension w/18-inch wheels,” and a $695 destination charge.

But competition and technology have changed our perception of luxury.

Take those rear seats. More comfortable seating can be found in a Buick Lucerne or in a Lincoln Town Car for substantially less money. I’ve driven both, and have ridden in both as a rear-seat passenger. I find it almost impossible to sit in the rear seat of a Lincoln Town Car for more than five miles without falling into a deep, pleasant sleep. I should have that same level of comfort in a car costing $21,000 more.

Automotive savants may argue that the Lexus LS 430 is technically superior to the rivals I’ve mentioned. For example, there’s the Lexus-trademarked Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, which helps the LS 430 driver avoid bumping into the car ahead. There’s the rear-view camera, traction and stability control. The list of the car’s technological goodies is seemingly endless.

So what?

Versions of the same technologies can be found in numerous other cars at lower prices. Consider General Motors Corp.

Beneath all of the opprobrium heaped upon General Motors is a GM truth that I’ve come to appreciate: The electronic gadgets installed in GM cars usually work exactly the way they were intended to work. They are simple, intuitive and highly functional. I have never had an electronic GM key fob that failed. But the key fob accompanying the LS 430 did. It failed to open the trunk; and it worked erratically for the side doors.

And there is this: Children nowadays expect a car wearing a luxury label to have rear video entertainment as standard equipment. They carry video screens in their pockets and book bags. They have them in their classrooms, and in their bedrooms at home. They have them in their Honda, GM, Ford and Nissan minivans. They expect to find them in a flagship Lexus car.

But the lone video screen in the LS 430 was the navigation screen in the front cabin; and that didn’t cut it with the younger set.

“Where’s the DVD screen?” asked godson Kyo.

“There’s only one screen,” I said, pointing to the navigation module.

“That’s it? Really?” Kyo asked. “This is a Lexus?”

I assured him that it was.

He didn’t believe me.

“We have a DVD player in our [Honda Odyssey] minivan,” he said with the kind of sarcasm that can only issue from the mouth of an 11-year-old.

Nuts & Bolts Lexus LS 430

Downside: The rear seats are uncomfortable. But that isn’t why I think the Ultra Luxury Lexus LS 430 is overpriced. It’s because the car world has grown more competitive, with many cars offering similar amenities found in the tested LS 430 for less. I mean, heck, this one didn’t even have a rear DVD screen. Harrumph!

Ride, acceleration and handling: The LS 430 has excellent acceleration and superior handling. From the driver’s seat, the car is an absolute joy, especially when its electronic suspension is set on the “Sport” mode. Unfortunately, not one of the nine passengers who rode in the car’s rear cabin on various trips enjoyed the ride. Not one!

Head-turning quotient: Nearly everybody mistook the Lexus LS 430 for an S-Class Mercedes-Benz. That may be flattering to Mercedes-Benz, but it does little to establish an independent LS 430 identity.

Body style/layout: The Lexus LS 430 is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive, large luxury sedan with a traditional notchback trunk.

Engine/transmission: The Lexus LS 430 comes with a standard 4.3-liter V-8 engine that develops 278 horsepower at 5,600 revolutions per minute and 312 foot-pounds of torque at 3,400 rpm. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that also can be shifted manually.

Capacities: The Lexus LS 430 has seating for five people. Maximum luggage capacity is 20.2 cubic feet. Fuel capacity is 22.2 gallons of gasoline. Premium unleaded is required.

Mileage: I averaged 24 miles per gallon mostly in highway driving.

Safety: Pre-collision system that automatically tightens safety belts, increases braking pressure and takes other defensive electronic measures to lessen the severity of an impending crash; Dynamic Radar Cruise Control; ventilated disc brakes front and rear; traction and stability control; side air bags, and head air bags for front and rear passengers.

Price: The Lexus LS 430 has a base price of $56,525. Dealer’s invoice price on the base model is $49,176. Price as tested is $71,590, including a total of $14,370 in options and a $695 destination charge. Dealer’s price as tested is $61,423. Prices sourced from Lexus and http://www.edmunds.com .

Purse-strings note: The Lexus LS 430 is an overall fine luxury car with many worthy, less-expensive competitors. Compare with Acura RL (V-6 engine but more horsepower and better fuel economy than the LS 430); Audi A8; Infiniti Q45; and Cadillac STS V-8.

    I assumed the hype was a bit over the top, I had high expectations and it still exceeded those expectations by many magnitude. The LS430 is as good as a car gets, and feels much more luxurious then many new BMW’s or Mercedes all while being dependable. Not much more you can ask for

  • The2004.. 2005…2006.. LS 430 is one fine car.

    No doubt one of the finest cars I have ever owned. And I have owned many since the 80s from small to large Luxury. This car ranks tops in reliability. It rides very quiet and handles the road well. I do like the softer 70s through 90s car seats, however. But it’s better than about any other luxury car of that decade. I’m at 125,000 original miles presently and I’m buying another LS 430 —2006 model year. Mine is a 2005 and I will keep it. I do not like the new Lexus nor any other cars. And no new Lexus is rated as well as the 430 from 04-06. 05-06 the best. Lexus peaked during these years and then with the 460 they went downhill fast, but still better than most other luxury cars. Then they came up some in reliability but they have never managed the reliability and quality of the 430 and I believe the future will prove that I am right because it already is beginning to do so now…. the 430 was the best that Lexus has ever made. Better than Honda on reliability, too.

  • Best car ever made?

    We bought a 2002 Ultra for our mom in 2006 with 30k miles. It has been the most trouble and hassle free car with amazing attention to detail, technology and engineering. The online forums provide very helpful tips - especially for so it yourselfers - and help keep the car relevant. We updated the lenses, puddle lights with the Lexus logo, lighting, and back up camera as additional safety features. Car had massage seats, heated and cooled, incredible audio, laser guided cruise control, with many additional limousine options. This level of quality will never be reached again due to modern production techniques. The cukture on the production floor at Lexus during the late 90s and early 2000s was truly magical. And it shows.

  • Absolutely awesome

    I served 28 years in the military with 16 years overseas, I retired and spent 18 years in the automobile business. I’ve owned over 75 vehiclesincluding Mercedes, Cadillacs, Acuras, Checker Marathon and Lexus Ls430. I’ve driven every car on the market up to 2017. Newer vehicles have made major improvements for longevity, dependability and reliability. I’m a stickler for appearance, performance and functionality. There is no vehicle on the road (bar none) that satisfies at the level of the Lexus LS 430. Think Four Seasons hotel or British Airways first class section...Lexus LS 430 is that impressive. I now own a 2006 Lexus LS in Moonlight Pearl with Parchment interior. The smooth, quiet and powerful engine has 44,800 actual miles. The window sticker in 2005/2006 on this model bumped $60,000. That’s without the overwhelming extra technology on vehicle’s today. That price was based on quality resulting from a billion dollar development cost by Toyota. Today the Lexus LS 430 is over $100,000 absence the pleasures of driving the 06 model. When I get a new Lexus loaner car while servicing mine I can’t wait to get mine parked back in my garage. There are fewer and fewer of these cars up for sale yet they still “ring the bell” in asking price. Don’t be cheap about cost with this LS 430 generations, they’ve earned their value in years of proven success. I see these on-line with over 300,000 miles on them still bringing $10,000. My advice is find a one or two owner unit with fair miles and pay up...it’s darn well worth it!

  • The best luxury car

    I bought this car as a cheap "get around" car. Paid $12k cash all in for a 14-year-old vehicle with 78k miles. My expectations were low. However, I have quickly fallen in love with this vehicle. Everything about it is amazing, and honestly, the technology is up to par with the newest models on the road. I can say with certainty I'll be buying another Lexus LS series in the future. If you can get your hands on an older model, definitely consider purchasing it.

  • Lexus raised the bar with the LS cars

    My Father and later several of my girlfriend had LS 400's, 2 of them had little problems, 1 was the starter, I thought I could replace one for a gal and I find out it sits under the intake manifold, pretty trick but what a pain in the butt. I did not feel up to that job. The other car was about 15 yrs old with 170k miles on the original timing belt which broke and did damage the motor when it did break. My Grandfather got a new 2006 LS 430 UL and died 2 months later, I have had it since then and in 2021 it is just turning to 50k miles, it is mica gold and has the 18 inch chrome factory rims, a mouse ate the interior a tiny bit but on everything back in 2011 and it had the entire interior replaced at over $10k. I have had Rolls Royces, Bentley's, Cadillac's, Beemer's Audi's, Mercedes,Lincoln's, and the LS 430 beats them in every way except wind buffeting noise with the window down, the air makes a weird buffeting behind my head like the seat belt is vibrating or something weirder, it always does it since new, it also hates mltiple s hort trips especially if anyone sits and listens to the 250 watt Mark Levinson sound system, it really sucks juice, if you take too many short trips it will eventually not start all of a sudden, no warning like a slow stasrter the last time, it just goes click. The LS 400 set the bar first, it had tv ads showing a stack of champagne glasses sitting atop the motor on a dyno with the car doing 140 mph or a quarter sitting on edge atop the engine as the engine idles! The car has a 4.3 engine that is perfectly mated to the transmission, in auto mode the tranny shifts down right now to a perfect gear at all times. The 2006 LS 430 was the best they ever made as it was perfected by 2006, nothing matches it since.

  • By far, the best vehicle I’ve ever owned.

    I purchased a 2001 LS430 in 2013, a one owner with 122000 miles. I’m over 60 years old and have owned Mercedes, BMW, Cadillac, Lincoln and many others. It is the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. I cannot believe the quality and craftsmanship that went into this car. Now at 210,000 miles it still looks and drives the same as when new. Everything works, the paint still shines, and it rides like a dream. Other then a few batteries, new tires and brakes, I’ve not had to put another penny into it for repairs. The quality is outstanding and it’s still a beautiful vehicle. It will be a sad day if I ever have to part with this car.

  • Luxury and reliability at its finest.

    This is one of the best vehicles made by Lexus hands down. It has so many features that even many new vehicles don't have. Features such as adaptive radar cruise control and massaging seats are unheard of in the early to mid 2000s. The best thing is, everything works flawlessly. This car is built like a tank! 100k miles for these cars is a joke. These are known to easily go past the 200k mile mark with ease. The same cannot be said for BMW and Mercedes Benz unfortunately.

  • Bulletproof engine and comfortable ride

    I’ve had my LS 430 bought used since 2007. Currently have 95,000 miles. Thought about trading newer, but it still drives like a dream. Just started getting some air bubbles in dash cover material. Few maintenance issues. Had auto mirrors and pneumatic trunk opener repaired. All minor, no major issues. A very comfortable and still classy looking car. I would buy again. Will be driving till it drops!! Bulletproof engine so far. Go Lexus!!!!

  • Most comfortable car I’ve owned

    So far you cannot go wrong with an LS. The features you get for the money do not compare to any other car I’ve had. It also has the Toyota reliability so it makes it an easy purchase.

Options include voice command features, a navigation system, a killer sound system, and voice activated hands free phone connection. If these aren’t enough, the Ultra Luxury option package also tosses in a variable air-suspension system, adjustable and heated rear seats with memory settings and massager option.   • Truly a great car

    I bought my 2006 LX430 from a close friend a year ago to replace a leased vehicle that I just turned in. My friend owned the LS since new and preformed all required factory maintenance at the Lexus dealership he purchased it from. He also replaced the battery and timing belt at the 12 year mark, the car had 50k miles at the time, I purchased it with 50,400 miles. I only drove it 7k miles in the first year I've owned it, now it's my full time car. I have owned many cars, including BMW, Mercedes. Jaguar, Lincoln etc. The LS is very smooth, very quiet and very comfortable. The technology was ahead of it time, the bluetooth works well with my Samsung S10 plus with no problems at all! The cars engine is so smooth that I often look at the tachometer when stopped at a light to see if its running. The interior is beautiful, very comfortable and all the switches seem to be in the right places. This car was very well thought out. The exterior is almost flawless with excellent paint, not as sporty as its competitors but I can live with that. It handels great for such a large heavy car. I just switched to snow tires for the winter as I live in the Chicago area, I have 2 friends that have the same car and followed their lead and it does preform well in the snow now. Gas mileage in the city is around 16, on the highway I've seen ip to 28, I average around 20. I think I may be one of the best cars I've owned, I can't emphasize how quiet and smooth it drives, I love the car, mine is dark grey with black interior, beautiful combo. I highly recommend this fine automobile. Find one with good service records and a clean carfax and grab it fast. You know they say when you park your car and walk away, if you look back once or twice and smile its an keeper.....its true!
