Expert 1992 Nissan 240SX review

our expert's take
Our expert's take
By Jim Mateja
Full article
our expert's take

There`s not enough room in the rear seat to seat your rear.

When you look behind before changing lanes, a blind spot obstructs what`s coming up from behind.

The head rests are so hard that each time you lie back you fall victim to what feels like a self-inflicted whack with a 2×4.

And there`s neither an air bag nor anti-lock brakes.

A very nice car, that 1992 Nissan 240SX.

Of course what makes it nice, or at least more than tolerable despite the annoyances and aggravations, is that this is the convertible version of the Japanese automaker`s compact sport coupe.

There`s a saying among collectors that when the top goes down, the value goes up-and so does the enjoyment. The ability to drop the top makes up for a variety of other 240SX shortcomings-at least in the summertime.

We test-drove the 1992 240SX that went on sale in May. It and the 300ZX represent the first new softtops from Nissan in more than 21 years.

Anyone considering a LeBaron convertible should check out the 240SX before signing on any bottom line. In craftsmanship alone there`s more attention to detail with the 240SX, not to mention such a snug fit that you don`t get any more wind noise than if you were in a hardtop coupe.

Bear running backs should move as fast as this top does. Unlatch the top at each side of the windshield, push the button marked “top down,“ and by the time you finish a blink, the top is folded and resting in its stowage container waiting for you to slip on the tonneau cover.

The swiftness sure beats a manually operated top and is many times quicker than most power tops, but it does present one drawback. If you don`t keep your hands planted firmly at your side when the top is moving, you`ll spend the rest of your life limited to counting to the number 9.

The return to the closed position is equally fast.

Speaking of quick and fast, the 240SX`s 2.4-liter, 16-valve, 155-h.p. 4- cylinder engine is no slouch in responding to your command. Some will enjoy the engine growl when you kick the pedal, though others will wonder why the need for sound effects in a car meant more for laid-back cruising than off- the-light power.

Standard equipment includes power brakes and steering, power windows and door locks, AM/FM cassette with power antenna, cruise control, tilt steering, leather-wrapped wheel, and driver/passenger vanity mirrors. Air conditioning and a compact disc player are the only options.

Base price is $21,995.

Nissan says to keep the 240SX convertible a limited edition it will build 20,000 copies and then no more. Through Aug. 7, sales were at 10,521 or just past the half-way point.

Strong point: It`s a good looking convertible. Weak point: Basically only one strong point, plus no air bag, no antilock brakes, no room in back seat, blind spots. >>

Got it for my daughter, she loved it but the car was too much for her! So I got it back and have loved the 240 ever since. Only freeway driving! Has only 150K Did normal maintenance every 3000, and new clutch, air cond. pump, radiator, top end and NEW PAINT! I am restoring it for future! If you find one buy it! NEVER REGRET IT!

  • My baby

Got this car as a gift in 1992. Brand spankin' new red convertible. yahoo! She has been a joy ever since. I have changed the oil, tires and new windshield wipers. she has 135,000 miles on her and runs like a champ. Just started her up yesterday. In the garage of course because she does not like the snow and ice! If you can find one, buy one! I am not selling however.

  • If you can find one...get one!

This is the 2nd 240SX I've owned, the current '92, was bought used and surprisingly is in immaculate condition for being 16yo, and with 284,000 miles on the odometer, she still runs strong, plenty of get-up-and-go, excellent gas mileage, and extremely fun to drive! You would swear it had more than 155hp, with the speed-limiter out you can easily hit 140-150mph. Like someone else said below this, the interior is simple, but who needs all the extras when you have an awesome car anyway! At 6'2", there comes a point that if i scoot the seat back far enough, its hard to reach the pedals. Trust me...once you own a 240SX...you might not want to own any other car, I know I don't!!!!

  • 15 Years and counting!

I'm the second owner of my 240sx, and I just had it turn 208,000 miles. It's been kept in outstanding condition, and it shows. A fifteen year old car, that has only had to replace things due to normal maintenance. It even has the stock clutch, and yes, it still has bite. The engine is like a tank. It doesn't burn oil, miss-fire, or seem weak. It still pulls to 6000 RPM, then the torque curve starts to fall toward the 7000 redline. Like spirited driving? Good. This car is perfect for that. Just the right amount of power to swing the rear out if you want it to. Worried about the snow? You should be. You will be all over the place with the 240sx... But if you know how to really drive a RWD car, it will be the best time of your life... The interior is simple, but still nice. While small to the large and stall, I fit quite nice! I'm 5'8. The backseats are not really accommodating for anyone. But more people in the car is more weight, and that's not always good... ;) Great car. Great experience. It's becoming a rare car, so if you get one, please, take care of it. You might have the last...

  • best car

I thought this car was the best. It handled very well, and had enough power for the size. Everything always works, no problems. The only thing was the back seat was small but thats ok cause I didn't ever have to sit back there
