What Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner?

The Toyota 4Runner is a throwback to classic SUVs of yesteryear thanks to its body-on-frame construction (a layout commonly used for hard-working pickup trucks). A 270-horsepower, 4.0-liter V-6 engine is standard, coupled with a five-speed automatic transmission and rear- or four-wheel-drive. Equipped with its optional third row, the 4Runner can seat up to seven. Rivals include the Ford Explorer, Honda Passport, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Subaru Ascent.

What’s New on the 2023 Toyota 4Runner?

Toyota 4Runner fans, take note: A 40th Anniversary Special Edition arrives for the 2023 model year. Based on the SR5 Premium trim, it has four-wheel drive and 17-inch bronze-colored alloy wheels. Three exterior paint colors are offered — white, Midnight Black Metallic and Barcelona Red Metallic — and each includes retro-themed red/orange/red exterior graphics; only 4,040 examples will be built. On a safety note, both blind spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are now standard on every 4Runner.

What Features in the 2023 Toyota 4Runner Are Most Important?

Standard features include:

  • 17-inch alloy wheels
  • Power-sliding liftgate window
  • Leather-trimmed steering wheel
  • 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning
  • Blind spot warning
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Adaptive cruise control

Available features include:

  • Power moonroof
  • Leather-trimmed seats
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Dual-zone automatic air conditioning
  • Navigation
  • JBL premium stereo
  • Locking rear differential
  • Selectable terrain management system

Should I Buy the 2023 Toyota 4Runner?

For SUV shoppers who intend to do plenty of serious off-road driving, the rugged 4Runner is worth consideration. It has an enviable reputation for traversing all types of terrain, but it’s on paved roads that the 4Runner stumbles: The ride is too firm, the handling too vague and fuel economy is poor. To its credit, the 4Runner has a roomy cargo hold, lots of active-safety features and a solid 5,000-pound maximum towing capacity. Its outdoorsy image has lots of appeal, but most of the 4Runner’s rivals feel much more refined in city and highway driving.

  • Just purchased by 3rd 4runner Limited.

Just purchased by 3rd 4runner Limited. Love that Toyota is reliable and I like sitting up over looking traffic. Toyota's hold there resale value. I did not purchase the extended warranty, I've never used it previously and think it's a waste of money unless you pur a EV. Also, the dealership might try to get you to buy windshield coverage....it's already in my auto insurance coverage. Shop around for rates, usually a credit union has pretty good rates if your credit score is good. Dealerships generally run higher interest rates. Also, make sure you get 2 key fobs. Just offering some general buying tips.

  • This vehicle is very expensive to repair/parts.

This vehicle is very expensive to repair/parts. I've been hit a couple times already and the paint alone is very expensive / orange is what it appears as..

  • It’s a 2023 so it only has 25’000 miles on it at this

It’s a 2023 so it only has 25’000 miles on it at this time, but I’m absolutely satisfied with the purchase. Sure, it’s not designed to be fast, ultra-comfortable, fuel efficient, but it excels in handling rough ranch roads and rough Dallas city potholes, nice narrow body for tight parking. It’s great as a highway cruiser, and the secret of the 4Runner is if you go 30-40mph over a fairly level road (AC off) you’ll hit 60mpg! Quite happy with it, a real urban assault vehicle, wish they came with a better selection of exterior colours though 👍

  • Toyota My first

Love the car My first 4Runner that I have owned sits higher than a normal SUV .I love the lights very bright lights up the road. I have a big dog she goes in the back with plenty of room she loves that the window opens. The two negatives that I have are that my lights are not auto and the lift gate is not powered I had those in my last vehicle so I have to mentally make some adjustments. But still love the car❤️

  • Why We Love Toyota`s and Shottenkirk Toyota!!

I absolutely LOVE my 2023 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium . Love the rear glass that rolls down for extra breeze with moonroof open. Only 4 stars on comfort as passenger seat in front has no lumbar support which wife needs. Also own 2015 Tacoma 4x4 crew Cab/ manual and 2018 Land Cruiser. We value Reliability, Dependability, and vehicles that are OVERBUILT for the job. Toyota/Lexus is the only brand that we will ever buy for our needs, and the only place we buy is from The Tracy Job Team at Shottenkirk Toyota in Quincy, Ill. Simply the BEST!!

  • 12 years/ 4 4Runners

The 2023 will be my 4th 4Runner. 2010, 2014 TRD, 2018 TRD, 2023 Limited. I have had no problems with anyone of them. All been great vehicles. Go where you want to go, and get back. I’ve enjoyed the ride, not a soft ride like some But it is a truck chassis and suspension. Interior accommodation is suitable for the vehicle. Holds up to daily use. Fold the seat down and carry what you want. Low 20’s on the road under 70 mph. High teens @ 85. I’ve had no regrets, never once in 12 years..
