2022 Toyota 4Runner review: Our expert's take

What Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner?

The Toyota 4Runner features rugged body-on-frame construction and is powered by a 270-horsepower, 4.0-liter V-6 engine paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. Rear- and four-wheel-drive versions are offered, and the 4Runner can seat up to seven with an available third row. Competitors include the Ford Explorer, Honda Passport and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

What’s New on the 2022 Toyota 4Runner?

Joining the lineup is an on-road-focused TRD Sport trim that features the cross-linked suspension from the Limited model for better body control as well as 20-inch wheels. A rear-seat reminder feature is also standard.

What Features in the 2022 Toyota 4Runner Are Most Important?

Should I Buy the 2022 Toyota 4Runner?

The 4Runner remains one of the last truck-based mid-size SUVs, and because of this it has a loyal following of owners who have a taste for the outdoors. With a respectable 5,000-pound towing capacity and nearly 90 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume, the 4Runner blends capability and versatility. It’s on paved roads, however, where the 4Runner feels crude compared with many of its rivals.

Simple, durable, rugged!

Not the most technologically advanced but that is what I was looking for, keep it simple! The features it has are the important ones, at least to me. This is my third one since 2011 and I love not having to bringing them in for repairs.

Last of an era

Amazing build quality…you can feel it in everything. The last of its kind. Buy one while they’re still around. Don’t buy if you’re concerned about fuel mileage. Trade off is drive it easily 20 yrs without replacing hybrid battery packs and CVT transmissions. Old school bulletproof reliability and quality.
