Full article

What Is the 2024 Toyota bZ4X?

The Toyota bZ4X is the brand’s first mainstream electric vehicle, launched for 2023 along with the Subaru Solterra (which is essentially a rebadged version of the bZ4X). Unlike the Subaru, which comes with standard all-wheel drive, the bZ4X is available with front-wheel drive or AWD in both its base XLE and upscale Limited trims. The single-motor FWD powertrain is rated at 201 horsepower, while the dual-motor AWD version makes 214 hp. The bZ4X competes with the Chevrolet Equinox EV, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Honda Prologue, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Nissan Ariya and Volkswagen ID.4.

What’s New on the 2024 Toyota bZ4X?

The bZ4X undergoes minor changes for its sophomore season. A dual-voltage charging cable is now standard on all grades for easier Level 1 and Level 2 charging. An eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and power liftgate become standard on the XLE trim, while hands-free parking assist is newly standard on the Limited trim. Remaining driving range and charging times are clearer in the information display.

How Much Range Does the 2024 Toyota bZ4X Have?

The Toyota bZ4X’s EPA-estimated driving range runs from 222 to 252 miles, depending on trim and drive wheels.

How Long Does It Take to Charge the 2024 Toyota bZ4X?

The Toyota bZ4X’s charging times range from an estimated 9.5 hours on a standard 240-volt Level 2 charger to go to a 100% charge, down to an estimated 30 minutes on a 350-kilowatt DC fast charger to go from a 10% charge to 80%.

What Features in the 2024 Toyota bZ4X Are Most Important?

Standard features include:

  • Leatherette and fabric upholstery
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Four USB-C ports, one USB-A port
  • 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity
  • Wireless charging pad
  • Digital instrument display
  • Rain-sensing wipers
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane departure steering assistt
  • Blind spot warning
  • Keyless entry and start
  • Safe exit assist

  • Smartphone digital key
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Heated rear seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • 360-degree camera system
  • JBL premium audio system
  • Automated hands-free parking system
  • X-Mode with deep snow/mud and downhill assist controls
  • Two-tone exterior colors
  • Rear roof spoiler
  • 20-inch wheels

Should I Buy the 2024 Toyota bZ4X?

Toyota was a little late to the EV game, choosing to focus on hybrids instead, but the bZ4X is a decent first effort. Though some drivers won’t like the far-forward location of the gauge panel or the lack of a proper glove box, the driving experience is pleasantly conventional overall, and cabin space is generous for both people and cargo. Acceleration is adequate if not rapid, but most competing EVs outclass the bZ4X in terms of both driving range and charging speed.

I found a 2017 Ram 1500 here. I was looking for exactly that trim for a long time. Fixed up the interior a bit, but mechanically it’s perfect. Serious truck, in the city it feels like a tank.

  • $35/month bump in electric bill, $220/month saved in gas.

$35/month bump in electric bill, $220/month saved in gas. Smooth ride, all the modern touches. Took a bit of getting used to not having a spare tire, but I could lug one around if it was a deal breaker. (The flat repair kit and roadside service say it isn't.) Love the adaptive cruise control, but sometimes it gets fooled when I move into a turn lane, so I tap the brake before that move. I rarely commute more than 50 miles a day, so no issue with charge. Took a 380 mile round trip and had no issue planning the ride to meet a Level 3 charger en route at lunch time. There are numerous apps for that. I added a home Level 2 fast charger for under 1k, and jumped on a discounted rate plan, so it's always at 80% when I get up in the morning. I like this car much more than I thought I would.
