Expert 2027 Toyota Land Cruiser review

Our expert's take

What Car Shoppers Need to Know

  • No major changes for 2027
  • Standard turbocharged hybrid powertrain rated at a manufacturer-estimated 22/25/23 mpg city/highway/combined
  • Base 1958 trim starts at $59,375 (all prices include destination)

The Land Cruiser is Toyota’s version of the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen, a vehicle with dual personalities and a reputation for both off-road dominance and coddling luxury. Dating to 2024, the current generation rides on a version of the same frame that underpins the Toyota Tundra and Tacoma pickups. It has a standard turbocharged hybrid powertrain that pumps out 326 horsepower and 465 pounds-feet of torque. Related: 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Review: Readjust Your Expectations

What’s New?

The only changes for 2027 are two new options that perfectly encapsulate the Land Cruiser’s dual missions: a snorkel to provide the engine clean intake air while driving through water and thick dust and heated and ventilated outboard second-row seats.

Pricing

The 2027 Toyota Land Cruiser is on sale now. It eschews Toyota’s typical trim-level naming convention (LE/SE, XLE/XSE, Limited etc.). Instead, the entry-level trim is the 1958, named for the first year the Land Cruiser was sold in the U.S. The premium trim is simply dubbed Land Cruiser. Pricing is as follows:

  • 1958: $59,375
  • Land Cruiser: $65,450

Off-Road Features

The Land Cruiser’s capability is grounded in standard full-time four-wheel drive, with low-range gearing and locking center and rear differentials. A skid plate protecting the engine, transmission and transfer case is also standard, as are recovery hooks front and rear. The uplevel Land Cruiser trim adds an electronically disconnecting sway bar for increased suspension articulation, as well as Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Select, which includes drive modes that adjust stability control and other vehicle parameters to optimize traction on various types of terrain. Along with the newly available snorkel, rock rails and additional skid plates are optional on both trim levels.

Versus Competitors

The Land Cruiser’s 8.7 inches of ground clearance is less than that of hardcore off-roaders like the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco. Its approach and departure angles of 32 and 22 degrees, respectively, likewise trail that duo’s — as do those of most factory-stock trucks. However, they’re only a degree or two shy of the Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro’s figures — and you won’t get ventilated second-row seats in any competitive off-roader, not even the mechanically identical Lexus GX.

Vehicle Drivetrain Price Horsepower Combined MPG Standard Ground Clearance (Inches)
2027 Toyota Land Cruiser 1958 4×4 $59,375 326 23 8.7
2026 Ford Bronco Base (four-door) 4×4 $42,490 300 19 8.4
2026 Jeep Wrangler 4-Door Sport 4×4 $41,035 285 20 9.7
2026 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4×4 $45,365 278 21 8.1
2026 Honda Passport RTL All-wheel drive $46,445 285 21 8.3
2026 Lexus GX 550 Premium 4×4 $67,735 349 17 8.7
