Alfa Romeo’s little 2024 Tonale compact SUV is a charmer. The plug-in hybrid is attractive inside and out, rides comfortably and boasts one of the best infotainment systems in the business, and its engaging powertrain generates grins and fun noises as easily as it does speed. Now, EPA testing has netted the Tonale an official 29 mpg combined once the gas engine fires up and 77 mpg-equivalent while operating in electric mode. The Tonale also gets an all-electric range of 33 miles and a total of 360 miles of range with a full battery charge.
The Tonale’s 29 mpg combined figure tops those of model-year 2023 rivals the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and X2, and Mercedes-Benz GLA. The compact Alfa doesn’t have many direct competitors offering plug-in powertrains at its size and price points at the moment, but for further context, the Lexus NX 450h+ is rated by the EPA at 84 mpg-e and 37 miles of range, the Volvo V60 Recharge at 74 mpg-e and 40 miles, and the Mini SE Countryman at 73 mpg-e and 18 miles.
In the Tonale, a 180-horsepower, turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine powers the front wheels, while a 121-hp electric motor sits at the back axle and sucks electrons from a 15.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. Total system output is 285 hp and 347 pounds-feet of torque, and Alfa claims the Tonale will squirt from 0-60 mph in less than 6 seconds. Add efficiency to this compact Italian’s list of attributes.
