Expert 1999 Acura CL review

our expert's take

With its new ’99 3.2 TL, Acura regains the momentum it had all those years ago with the debut of the legendary Legend.

Since then Acura has:

Bought a sport-utility from Isuzu rather than create its own.

Switched a perfectly decent name like Legend and its other cars to alphanumeric monikers such as RL, TL and CL. That’s what BMW and Lexus do and Acura wanted to make sure it was a follower and not a leader.

Produced an odd-looking, under-powered car like the CL coupe and failed to quickly update its entry-level model, the Integra.

The new TL helps erase those past mistakes. It’s a fabulous car that’s priced to make a deep stab into the territory where BMW 328s, Lexus ES 300s and Mercedes C280s roam.

Even if price was the only story here, it would be a significant one.

This new TL sedan comes in two variations: a $27,950 extremely well-equipped version and a $29,950 extremely well-equipped version with a satellite navigation system.

Last year, Acura sold a 2.5 TL and a 3.2 TL priced at $30,700 and $33,150, respectively. That means the 1999 model costs $2,750 to $5,200 less than the 1998 version.

Instead of just being a price-buster, the 3.2 TL is a sensuously styled, refined luxury sedan. It’s fast, not quick. And it’s not a driver’s car in the way that a BMW 3-Series is. Like all the new TLs, our test model came equipped with Honda’s SportShift transmission. It allows you to drive with automatic shifting while stuck in traffic and to do a little flipping up and down on the gears, a la a manual shifter, when you’re looking for driving fun.

The 225-horsepower, 3.2-liter VTEC V-6 is a version of the one that Acura uses in the CL coupe and Honda puts it in its upscale Accord. In the TL, it’s a smooth, strong powerplant.

From its elegant front end to its sheered-off rear, the TL turns head. Viewed from the side, this might be the best-looking car in its class.

On the inside, buyers will find all the requisite luxury touches, from bunched leather seats to strips of fake wood in front and back. For an extra $2,000, buyers can add Acura’s satellite navigation system.

Although based on the Accord’s chassis, the new TL has a wheelbase that’s lengthened by more than an inch. That and a much more rigid frame results in a better ride. The longer wheelbase also means more room for back-seat passengers.

Unlike its BMW, Lexus and Mercedes counterparts, this near-luxury sedan is built in America, at one of Honda’s Ohio plants. That accounts for some of the price reduction.

Options are few on the TL — heated seats, a moonroof, leather and wood trim, an in-dash CD player, anti-lock brakes and a traction control system are standard fare. Others do offer side-impact air bags, while Acura does not.

Acura expects the new 3.2 TL to significantly boost sales over the previous model. With all-new near-luxury cars on the market in 1999 from BMW, Volvo and Saab , it’ll be a tough task. But, for the first time in recent memory, Acura has a car that seems up to the challenge.

  • Breaks went out, but it's never leaked oil

Mine is a 1998 with 156k on the ODO and it's 2024 and it's not leaking oil. Every car I've ever owned over 10 years old did. It leaks power steering fluid very quickly and I've never had that happen before. I had a 1975 AMC Hornet a few years ago and it leaked everything but power stearing. But to be fair it's not going to destroy the car if I don't replace it. I've driven the car for a year so far and outside of difficulty making tight turns, it's fine. The drivers door latch sometimes sticks and the door can't close, but 30 seconds with a screw driver and it's as good as new and the trunk latch does the sane thing once in a while. It's a 25 year old car and it isn't leaking anything but power steering. However, after I bought it a year ago the entire breaking system went completely out and cost $1700 to fix. So, there's that. Entirely new breaks and break lines all around. Everything except the master cylinder.

  • Good, dependable, durable

It got me where I needed to go. Good top speed. Held up to a fair amount of abuse. Body could have kept going, but the transmission could not after 20 years.

  • Solid car

The Acura CL Coupe is a reliable, solid vehicle. While I have had to fix a few things on the car (the ignition switch was recalled for example), overall, I have had to do very little to maintain this car. My biggest complaint is the mediocre gas mileage, but it is a V6 to be fair.

  • The Car That rescued me!

I was in need of a vehicle, and this young lady was selling her car it needed to be fixed up some. So I fixed the car up and that car was very good to me. Until I was in a car accident and my car was written off. But before my write off I enjoyed the time I was able to spend with this vehicle.

  • My Sporty, Trusty 2.3CL

I owned my 5 spd Black 2.3CL since 2006, when it had 68,000 km. Now, with 213,000 km on it, it keeps on going. Except for the odd issue, like starter, alternator, brakes, it hasn't given me any issues. I have done some custom suspension work on it as well as a cold air intake and chip to improve performance, and it hasn't disappointed. Honda was smart enough to introduce VTEC (variable valve timing) much earlier, in 1993 or '97 I believe, before any other manufacturers, like the Domestics, thus the fuel economy has been there and still is from the beginning. I average, 32 mpg or better any day, on a 14 yo car. I dare anyone to compare. Honda also didn't try to trick us, like the Domestics, into buying cars that don't actually get what they say, or misusing the highway mileage as the average. I am happy, I have to part with it because I would like something newer, otherwise it has been a great, fun car, with the little luxuries that Acura affords.

  • Great car.

We 're the second owner of this CL and we just love it. It is the best car and is so reliable. Never has it given us any kind of trouble. '99 for certain is definitly a good year for this car. We have never had a better car. This car is very comfortable, it has great visibility while driving, super strong Air Conditioning, great factory radio. Everything is top quality and design on this car. Drives and handles wonderfully. We are spoiled with it and are still not selling it. Have put on 150k miles and it still runs strong and like new. A real gem of a car and top-notch refinement and quality.

  • Loved the look of this car

Been leasing cars since the early 90's and the higher end cars hold their value so well, the monthly rates are most manageable. Loved the way the Acura included routine maintenance, like oil changes for 48 months while a Honda Accord you had to pay for them yourself. I took the 2.3 liter engine as it was most responsive and felt any more horsepower and I'd just be getting pulled over all the time. Loved everything about the car, particularly the extraordinary rear styling. Replaced it with the 2001 CL S and the 3.2 liter engine was phenomenal. Such a thrill to drive. Always keeping my eye out for a clean '99 CL - love to have another.
