Vehicle Overview
Acura’s RL luxury sedan is equipped with 290 horsepower, all-wheel drive and a host of standard luxury features. It competes with the Cadillac DTS, BMW 5 Series and Lexus ES. Little changed for 2008 besides an expansion to its real-time-traffic-monitoring coverage areas.

Acura calls the RL’s drive system Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. It can apply as much as 100 percent of rear torque to the outer rear wheel in curves in order to enhance cornering and stability attributes and dry- and wet-weather traction. Up to 70 percent of engine torque goes to the rear wheels under full-throttle acceleration.

The RL has an optional Technology Package that includes active headlights that swivel up to 20 degrees to better illuminate corners, as well as a rearview camera and a navigation system with real-time traffic monitoring. A Collision Mitigation Braking System, Adaptive Cruise Control and Michelin PAX run-flat tires are also optional.

Exterior
Acura says the RL has a “wide, muscular stance” and that the “dramatically sloping hood leads down to an aggressive front fascia with angular headlight treatments.” Aluminum is used for the hood, front fenders, deck lid, subframe and suspension. Riding a 110.2-inch wheelbase, the RL is 193.6 inches long overall, 72.7 inches wide and 57.1 inches tall. Alloy wheels hold 17-inch tires.

Interior
The five-occupant RL has an interior trimmed with wood and leather. A 10-speaker Acura/Bose DVD Audio system, XM Satellite Radio and an OnStar communication system are installed. Acura’s Keyless Access System does away with a traditional key for starting, locking and unlocking.

A wealth of standard features includes leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control and heated, power-adjustable front seats.

Working in conjunction with XM Satellite Radio, the optional real-time traffic monitoring system uses XM NavTraffic data. For 2008, AcuraLink expanded its traffic markets to 76 metropolitan areas. An 8-inch screen displays current traffic details, including flow, accidents and freeway construction. Drivers can then select the least-congested route. In addition, AcuraLink can relay maintenance and diagnostic information.

Under the Hood
Acura’s 3.5-liter V-6 generates 290 hp and 256 pounds-feet of torque and drives a five-speed automatic transmission with paddle-style shifters on the steering wheel. All RLs have Acura’s SH-AWD system.

Safety
Side-impact and side curtain airbags and an electronic stability system are standard. All-disc antilock brakes are installed. An optional Collision Mitigation Braking System uses a radar unit to measure distance to objects in front of the RL. If the system judges the distance to those objects is closing too quickly, it alerts the driver and, if necessary, applies brakes.

Driving Impressions
The previous RL was an excellent road car with a solid, heavy feel. That’s still the case, but it’s augmented by even stronger performance. A shortage of power is never a concern, and the automatic transmission shifts easily and promptly.

The ride is fine on smooth surfaces, but this sedan gets jittery on harsher pavement. Steering is firm and positive. The RL is extra-quiet but not eerily silent.

Space in the comfortable, supportive front seats is abundant, and snug bolstering holds occupants in place. Backseat space is less appealing, with marginal headroom and fair legroom and foot room. Trunk space is modest, but visibility is very good.

The RL’s rich-looking dashboard sports instruments that are large and easy to read. Some controls, however, are cryptic or hard to find.

Real-time traffic information is a valuable feature, but trying to spot traffic indications on the video map screen is somewhat difficult. The map also washes out in sunlight and is excessively reflective.

50 additional horses,19"/20" wheels, 10" dash-matching wood strip or carbon fiber on steering wheel, red brake calipers, 20% exhaust upgrade and Mercedes,BMW. and other luxury brands would be selling fewer cars. Absolutely beautiful.

  • Most Reliable Car i have ever owned.

This is a beautiful Acura RL. The vehicle drives extremely well for a luxury car, the way it handles and most importantly how safe it feels, especially in the snow.

  • Best car , luxury, sporty, technical

I bought used and I love it , it's got everything I was looking for with low miles. More comfortable and peppy than Lexus , just wish exterior looks more sporty but this was not the primary goal of this sedan

  • Best overall car I have ever owned

Best all all around car I have ever owned - the AWD is awesome, particularly in snow, and it is fitted with luxury amenities FAR ahead of its time - dual temp controls, dual seat warmers, built in rear window shades and power back window shade, back up camera, VTEC, XM, Navigation, etc etc.

  • Great Unloved Ride

you cannot beat the value of the RL - its under appreciated - unloved - this car has a ton of power - is really comfortable - has an awesome AWD transmission - rides smooth - great VTEC motor - all that and mid to high 20's MPG on the highway. I have owned a lot of Acura's this one is the best. Never understood why this car was not more popular.

  • Great car for the money!

This car has all of the features that you would want in a luxury sedan. Heated leather seats, keyless entry, power everything, navigation, back-up camera, and the list goes on and on. There are so much features on this car that I I haven't discovered everything there is to know yet. The car rides smooth and takes corners really well thanks to the super handling all wheel drive. The power is sufficient for this car at 290 horsepower. The gas mileage could be better as I only get around 23 mpg combined.

  • Solid as a rock!

I was looking to buy a 5 series but changed my mind because I didn't want to come off as pretentious. I'm so glad I did!!! I have to say I love this car. Why? First of all I love the power, efficiency, and reliability of this beautiful V6. Then there's the styling especially the rear of the car, beautiful! Now for the ride, it's solid but not to firm like you would find in a BMW or to soft like you would find in a Lexus, it's just right. Might have a lot to do with the Super Handling All Wheel Drive (SHAWD).

  • A good find

Let me admit that I am a believer in Honda products having driven the first one back in 1985 and have owned one ever since. There are four members of the household and we all driver honda products. I will buy second hand as against new because of the savings and also because I have an outstanding mechanic so Idon't have to pay Dealer service prices. The car I bought was a 2008RLTEC with 18500 miles on the clock. I made sure I took it to my mechanic to be assed by him and also purchased an extended warranty. The car is impecable inside and out except for the leather on the center console and the armrest on the drivers door that is showing signs of usage- this the mechanic tells me is a weakness of the 2005-2008 models. On highways I maintaned a speed of ten miles above posted and got an MPG three miles above rated. I am a technically challenged person so I am still having fun learning all the tec. features like the bluetooth, voice commands, backup camera, the paddle shift etc, etc.
