With the Honda Accord redone for ’03, it was time for the remake of the Acura TL for ’04 that’s built off the same platform.

That means new styling, which moves from bland to less bland, though for a brief moment, we thought the young man working valet at the restaurant was going to require a defibrillator when his eyes made contact and he became enamored with the TL we drove up in. Difficult to account for taste.

Have to wonder what designers for the Acura luxury division of Honda must think when they see the creativity that went into a Ford Mustang or Dodge Viper or Chevy SSR–or even a Chrysler PT Cruiser.

But we digress.

The TL gets new dimensions along with new sheet metal. Though the industry trend of late is to go bigger when redoing a model, the TL wheelbase was reduced by 0.2 of an inch while overall length took a hit of 3.2 inches.

Acura spokesman Mike Spencer said the shrinkage was the result of customer complaints the former TL looked “too big and bulky” so some of the rear overhang was lopped off without sacrificing cabin space. In fact, he said, the ’04 is nearly 2 inches wider than the former model.

Have to say the extra width is appreciated in providing some more wiggle room as well as space to stretch arms wrapped in winter coats. Those in the back seat, however, might not boast about wiggle or stretch room.

The TL also gets a power boost. The 3.2-liter, 24-valve V-6 now delivers 270 horsepower and 238 foot-pounds of get-away-from-the-line torque, up from 225 h.p. and 216 foot-pounds of torque before the engine was tweaked to generate more muscle.

The power boost in the TL helps explain why Acura has dropped the high-performance Type S from the lineup and let the TL handle the load.

It took only one hard kick of the pedal when moving away from the toll basket to feel the difference a few more horsepower and a little more torque does in improving launch.

However, be prepared for some torque steer, with the car moving sharply to the left or right, as a result of the added power in this front-wheel-drive sedan.

Acura gives you a choice of transmissions, 6-speed manual that’s new for 2004 or a 5-speed automatic with a manual mode option. While enthusiasts prefer manual, the 6-speed in the test vehicle was a tad notchy and the clutch just a bit temperamental.

And while the TL is rated at 20 m.p.g. city/30 m.p.g. highway with the 6-speed, the needle tended to move a lot faster toward “E” than you would expect from that rating and a 17-gallon fuel tank.

Ride is smooth, handling effortless and standard vehicle stability assist (VSA) prevents wandering to keep you in control. VSA had been offered on the TL Type S only.

Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes are also standard.

As noted, cabin room is good, and the perforated leather seats supportive, especially at playtime.

Gauges are excellent, with a blue background that makes the needles and numbers easy to see. The blue hue also is easy on the eyes–unlike red or orange which is considered decorative, but sometimes blurs at night.

Acura makes it easy to acquire a TL because everything but a navigation system ($2,000) and summer high-performance tires ($200) to replace the 17-inch all-season radials are standard.

New amenities for ’04 include a DVD audio system with six-disc CD changer and cassette, a hands-free phone system and XM satellite radio.

When given a choice between watching an arrow float across a map of Illinois on the navigation screen or listening to Jeff Foxworthy on the XM’s comedy channel, the map loses.

XM is standard, along with three months free listening. You don’t have to pony up the monthly $9.99 fee until month four to enjoy the billion or so static-free satellite stations that provide comedy, talk, sports and music in so many languages that some are tough to spell, much less understand.

Unfortunately, the test car must have been in service for more than three months because, when pressing the XM dial, a recorded voice said the only way to listen was to subscribe–online, difficult because we left the computer in the office, or by phone.

Because a hands-free phone is also standard, we simply pressed the phone icon on the steering column to learn how to bring Foxworthy into the cabin.

Another recorded voice, however, said the phone was not in service, either. So we opted to let the navi provide the entertainment.

The ’04 TL tested starts at $32,650. Standard equipment includes power driver/passenger seats (driver 10-way, up from eight-way in the past), power locks, mirrors (heated, too), and windows; power moonroof; dual-zone automatic climate control; rear-window defroster; side-window defoggers; and digital clock.

Also standard are dual-stage driver/passenger front- and side-impact air bags plus air-bag curtains front and rear; outside temperature gauge; Xenon high-intensity discharge headlamps; heat-rejecting tinted glass; trunk-to-cabin pass-through for skis; two power outlets; and pull-out storage compartments in the doors.

TL owners wanting a sportier look can opt for a new A-Spec package available at dealerships for $5,200 plus installation–figure $200 to $250 depending on location. It adds ground effects and performance-tuned shocks and springs.

Acura also has developed an A-Spec concept to explore an even higher-performance upgrade with a more than 300-h.p. V-6, 21-inch tires, track-tuned suspension, as well as adaptive cruise control that automatically applies the brakes if you approach a vehicle too closely. Stay tuned on that one.

  • The last car I owned- a silver 2004 TL.

    The last car I owned- a silver 2004 TL. I traded in my 1993 Vigor (after 11 years of Japanese car excellence- no issues or problems ever) for it and was instantly enamored. Looked great, handled beautifully, an absolute pleasure to drive. Gas prices were still reasonable in the mid-00’s and gas mileage was reasonable. I finally had to (very begrudgingly) sell it after 3 years as the combination of car payment, insurance and garage parking in downtown Philadelphia began exceeding $1,000/month. The model I had is now hard to believe 20 years old, but if given the opportunity I’d take it back in a second.

  • 10+ years of faithful service

    I bought my TL back in 2013 used. One of the most reliable vehicles I've ever owned. I have just over 246k miles on her now. The navigation system sucks. I had it repaired once and when it went out the second time, I just gave up. A bit difficult to get in and out of. Love the styling, performance and comfort. I'm retiring in Dec of 2023 and will be selling her.

  • Best car I've ever owned in over 50 years

    I purchased my '04 TL (6-MT transmission) in October, 2004. It has been a remarkable car, virtually problem-free. I've driven it 190,000 miles: all it has needed was: timing belt (x2); front and rear brake calipers/rotors, alternator. I replaced the water pump when they needed to replace the alternator. It has 99% of it's engine power. There is ZERO vibration from the engine. The A/C blows ice cold! A few things have developed into problems: Bluetooth connection no longer works; sat/nav is problematic on very hot days (DVR issue? Dashboard has some cracks in the vinyl. Radio speakers sound weak and tinny on cold days (once car warms up, radio sound strengthens). A/C/defroster/ventilator diverter needed replacement. I'm told my six-speed manual transmission probably has between 40,000 - 75,000 miles remaining before it might fail (that would be failing at anywhere between 230,000 to 300,000 miles)...leather interior is quite good...almost excellent, drives straight, goes like heck if you push it (it still CAN do 0-60 in under six seconds!)...I've owned over seven cars since 1970 and it's the best car I've ever owned. I've probably spent $13,000 in repairs and maintenance since I've owned it (I park it in an indoor garage in NYC). That's about $50,000 (purchase price + maintenance costs) over 20 years, or $2,500/year or just about $200/month. NYC roads have winter potholes, so I've purchased 11 rims over 20 years. I use winter tires in winter and ONLY ONCE was not able to proceed UP a steep mountain road with snow/ice at 30 degrees F. It's traction system works magnificently and it goes in snow when other cars cannot! It still gets between 31-34 mpg (highway) depending on temperature (summer: 31 mpg highway, winter 34 mpg highway (averaging around 26-27 mpg combination city/hwy)..The car is in excellent condition with maybe a tiny one-inch dent in the upper R fender and one tiny 1/8th-inch mark on the rear bumper. Everyone says it looks showroom new, as I've kept it clean and waxed and never allowed anyone to eat/drink it it (no kids or pets) so when I park it it shines and looks really nice. I get offers to sell it all the time!

  • BEST CAR I HAVE EVER OWNED!

    Fast. Reliable. Low maintenance. Everything you need. Only reason why I sold mine was my wife got a new car. They don't make them like they used to.

    It is is great condition for a 2004 Acura TL, shortly modern style and a great / powerful engine. It still has many year of low maintenance ahead.

    I am driving Acura TL over 10 years. Acura TL is very excellent, comfortable. Maintenance is not too expensive. I plan to buy next new Acura car too.

    Great car. I just brought one about a mouth ago,only problem that the owner before didn't took car of the trans.. it wet out 2 weeks later...thats really the only main problem I got when did research... As long as you change trans oil when should..trans problems going to be little to none... And I found out that the 02 -04 odessey van has same trans and some year Accord don't worry about sport mode it will work the only difference about the trans is the gear ratio...but still speed the same do the hole dash no problem ...like the original trans never left the car...

  • Beast of a car

    I would first like to note that I got a great deal on my TL. I have the manual transmission which is really hard to find for a good price. These cars hold there value very well bc they are a very popular and fun to drive. For me the key things are that I wanted the v6 Honda engine as it is extremely reliable and I have worked on them before (my wife owns a pilot), and I wanted 4 doors as I have 3 kids. The only way to get a manual transmission in v6 accord is to go with the 2 door coupe. The other big thing for me is that in the “luxury” brands the Acura’s are by for the cheapest to work on bc it’s driving components are Honda. Parts are cheap and there are plenty of videos on how to fix almost anything on YouTube. I would recommend to anyone, especially someone who wants to be able to work on their own car and that wants something sporty yet extremely reliable. Also there are not many cars in the standard transmission with this kind of power without going way up in cost, or sacrificing reliability. Great car I thoroughly love driving!

  • Best car I have owned

    This car is amazing it’s great for long travel and for luxury and they have the power for something sporty I love it and I don’t think imma get rid of it I have 250,000 miles before I did a engine rebuilt not because it was bad just because I needed a better engine for what imma be doing to it honestly I was thinking on getting a type s for a more sporty but this car is enough for me and the price the type s goes for is way to much compared to the TL there basically the same but just the exterior look if I had the chance to get one I’ll take it.

  • Smooth and fast!

    Plenty of room for 4 adults. Low maintenance. It wants to keep running forever! It charges forward on the on ramp with power to spare and sips gas on the long trips.
