BMW X6

Coming off a significant refresh for the 2024 model year that saw the pair gain new mild-hybrid powertrains and overhauled interiors, BMW’s X5 and X6 are otherwise little changed for 2025 with the exception of a special edition for the X5.

Silver Anniversary Edition Details

Marking 25 years since the first X5 rolled off its Spartanburg, S.C., assembly line, BMW is launching the Silver Anniversary Edition of its popular SUV for the 2025 model year. Doubling down on the off-road capability the X5 first brought to BMW, the Silver Anniversary Edition debuts an xOffroad Package that the automaker notes is currently limited to the special edition.

The xOffroad Package features a height-adjustable air suspension, mechanical locking rear differential and skid plates; General Grabber all-terrain tires are available for an additional cost. To help drivers make the most of that hardware, the package also includes four additional vehicle modes for sand, gravel, snow and rocks. Reprogrammed exterior cameras remain active up to 21 mph to aid in wheel placement and obstacle avoidance, and a special off-road screen on the infotainment display shows ground clearance and current longitudinal and lateral inclination angles.

Based on the straight-six-powered X5 xDrive40i, the Silver Anniversary Edition is sprayed in Lime Rock Grey metallic paint and features 20-inch wheels, black exterior trim, Silver Anniversary Edition badging and carbon-fiber interior trim that’s normally reserved for the V-8-powered X5s. Standard luxury features include a trailer hitch, remote start, the Parking Assistance Package, and heated front seats, armrests and steering wheel. BMW will only build “about 1,000” units, priced at $81,075 (all prices include $1,175 destination fee).

Odds and Ends for the Rest

For 2025, full LED front lighting with cornering lights are now standard on both the X5 and X6, and the Driving Assistance Professional Package adds Active Lane Change with eye activation, in which the vehicle will suggest lane changes to the driver when operating in its hands-on semi-autonomous mode. All the driver has to do to initiate the lane change is look at the appropriate mirror; the car will then activate the turn signal and perform the lane change itself. The Climate Comfort Package on lower trim levels of both SUVs now includes massaging seats, and the Silver Anniversary Edition’s air suspension — but not the rest of the xOffroad Package — is available on six-cylinder X5 40i variants.

Powertrain Specs and MPG

The 2025 BMW X5 and X6 are largely the same mechanically, the latter trading some rear-seat headroom and cargo space for a stylish fastback roofline. The base 40i versions of both are powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with mild-hybrid assistance that makes 375 horsepower and 398 pounds-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard. The X5 sDrive40i is rear-wheel drive, while xDrive all-wheel drive costs an additional $2,300; AWD is standard on the X6. The X5 returns an EPA-rated 23/27/25 mpg city/highway/combined with either RWD or AWD, while the X6 is rated at 23/26/24 mpg.

X5 buyers can also get the xDrive50e’s detuned version of the turbocharged inline-six, which is paired with a plug-in hybrid system that boosts output to 483 hp and 516 pounds-feet. A 19.2-kilowatt-hour battery provides an electric range of up to 38 miles. The PHEV powertrain is not available in the X6.

The X5 and X6 M60i xDrive get a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 that generates 523 hp and 553 pounds-feet of torque. AWD is the only choice with this engine, which returns 17/22/19 mpg in both body styles. In the M Competition variants, the V-8’s torque output stands firm at 553 pounds-feet, but horsepower increases to 617 hp. AWD is again standard, and both variants are rated at 13/18/15 mpg.

Safety Equipment and Standard Features

The 2025 BMW X5 and X6 come with Active Driving Assistant standard. This safety suite includes forward collision warning with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane departure steering assist, blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors.

Other standard features on the X5 and X6 include a panoramic moonroof, heated front seats and the BMW Curved Display, which abuts a digital instrument panel with the central touchscreen under a single piece of curved glass. Navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and wireless device charging are also standard.
