our expert's take

Vehicle Overview
A new SE model joins the roster this year for the Stratus, a front-wheel-drive sedan scheduled to be redesigned for the 2001 model year. Stratus is built from the same design as the Chrysler Cirrus and Plymouth Breeze. While production of Plymouth’s version ended in December, the present Stratus and Cirrus will continue through the end of the model year and new models will be introduced for 2001.

The new SE model slots below the sporty, better-equipped ES as the entry-level Stratus.

Exterior
Stratus, which comes only as a four-door sedan, shares its cab-forward design with the Cirrus and Breeze. The three cars differ only in front and rear treatment, wheel designs and exterior trim.

Interior
The cab-forward design and 108-inch wheelbase (longer than either the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord) give Stratus impressive interior space for its overall length of 186 inches, which is more the size of a compact car than a midsize. The roomy trunk holds 15.7 cubic feet of cargo, and the one-piece rear seatback folds for additional space. The seatback can be released from inside the car or from the trunk, and it can be locked.

Dodge is in a generous mood this year, giving the base SE model power windows, locks and mirrors and an eight-way power driver’s seat at no cost. Front bucket seats are standard in the five-passenger Stratus.

Under the Hood
Dodge’s generosity extends to the engine compartment with the SE model. A 132-horsepower, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine and five-speed manual transmission are standard, but SE buyers can get a 150-horsepower, 2.4-liter engine and automatic transmission at no cost. Don’t turn this offer down — the 2.0-liter engine is too weak for this car.

The ES model uses a 168-horsepower, 2.5-liter V-6 and has the AutoStick automatic transmission, which allows clutchless manual shifting by tipping the shift lever left or right.

Performance

Stratus and its cousins at Chrysler and Plymouth are attractive, roomy sedans that perform capably. Sales have lagged recently, so hefty rebates of $1,250 and up make them more attractive from a price standpoint.

  • Big car feel.

Wife"s car for fourteen years. A city runner. Average repair cost untill 2018 when the average cost got more,(per hour). 65,000 miles when the Nissan dealer gave me zilch for it. My fault for trading as we found out at the dealer that State farm had mistakenly cancelled my insurance six monthe before and had no way to get it home on a labor Day Friday afternoon.

  • Average Car

Got this car only a month ago. Bought it as is because our other vehicle saw better days and finally went. It is ok but pretty low to the ground which I am not use to. I am hoping it can last for a couple of years to try and get us through. Mainly being used as a point A to point B car. Has some things that will need to take care of but had to get something quick and cheap. At this point it seems to be ok but will see down the line.

  • Avoid at all costs.

I owned a 2000 model and at 92k miles, everything fell apart. Literally the mirrors fell off of it. Just a car to go from point A to point B.

  • 9 years and still running

Well, my parents have purchased a Stratus SE with 2.4l DOHC engine brand new in late 99. Since then it has been running great even after 90000 miles. This car has proved to be very reliable and it had needed only tires and brakes replacement as well as the common dealer services. No tranny or engine problems so far. Since 2008 I have been using this car as my transportation to college and it proved to be very economic, fast and still reliable. Before this car I didn't trust in Dodge cars but after this one I have totally changed my mind.

  • 2000 Dodge Stratus (2.0L)

I bought our '00 Stratus 4-dr/gold, 2.0L in '03 with 103,000 miles on it for only $4300. It now has 193,000 and still runs great! A fantastic value. The 2.0L engine was last made in '00 after five years, so nearly all bugs were worked through by Dodge, to include the head gasket. Very comfortable car. 2.0L engine does not have lots of power which is exactly what I wanted since this car was driven by our three kids to/from high school and college. Only repairs in last 5+ years have been transimission solenoid pack ($700) when it wouldn't come out of 1st gear one day. Also had freeze plugs changed (leaking) and had timing belt and water pump changed since they had access at same time ($900). Overall there has been minimal maintenance. Engine is still smooth, but transmission shifts hard every once in a while. Today, they are changing oil pan gasket and crankshaft sensor due to leaks. Other than that, it should be leak free and ready for our last child to take it to college. Also switching to high mileage Mobil One synthetic oil. Overall, very pleased with reliability, drive, and comfort.

  • windshield glare

i love the car but have a real problem with the sunglare on the windshield to the point where it is sometimes dangerous. i drive directly into the sun coming and going to work every day. there have been several times where i have had to pull off the road because i can not see and often do not see walkers or bicyclists until i am on top of them. i even bought good polarized sunglasses in hopes that would help. i would sure love to hear any suggestions someone might have. other than that the vehicle is the best car i have ever owned.

  • Reliable. Sporty. Economical. American!

I purchased this car in 2001 with only 17,000 miles on it. It now has over 116,000 miles and this American vehicle is still going strong. I have been pleasantly surprised at the reliability this vehicle has given me. I have done no major repairs to the vehicle to this point, only routine maintenance.

  • The Car For Those Needing Work and Play

I have had my used 2000 Dodge Stratus SE for one year now I must say, I feel great about its performance, styling, and handling. I do recommend performance tires of 205 on 14 or 15 inch rims. The cup holders are not the best designed features of the car. When holding containers, the shifter gets in the way once placed in park and when cornering, the drinks can tip over. The cab-forward design and shorter front end makes parking the car interesting. I had repark several times because I came up short of the parking barriers. When parking, the car seems to glide into any space with ease. The car wants to 'roll like an autobot' once you press the accelarator. The brakes hold well, but I recommend upgrading to performace. When making turns the car is very responsive and seems to have a better understanding of the road conditions. I recommend the 2.4l DOHC as a well balanced car in terms of speed, manueverbility and performance. The one thing that is hard is actual maintainence. The compact engine compartment makes it differcult when replacing certain hoses. Still, I would recommend this car to anyone looking for a good performer.
