Expert 2009 Ford Ranger review

our expert's take
Our expert's take

our expert's take

Vehicle Overview
The Ranger is offered in only two cab styles: regular and SuperCab. The regular cab comes with either a 6- or 7-foot cargo bed. The SuperCab comes with only a 6-foot bed. Four trim levels are offered: XL, XLT, Sport and FX4, which is geared toward off-roaders.

New for 2009
Ford didn’t add anything for 2009, but the automaker did kill a few features. The 3.0-liter V-6 engine was dropped, as was the 4×4 regular cab. The only other changes are packaging revisions: A Class III trailer hitch is standard on all V-6 models, and Sirius Satellite Radio is standard on FX4 and Sport models.

Exterior
The Ranger’s outward appearance hasn’t changed much since 1998, other than minor hood and bumper updates for 2004. The Ranger remains more of a compact pickup.

  • Sport Package features monochromatic theme
  • Sport has horizontal-slat grille
  • Other models have H-bar grille with nostrils
  • FX4 models have three skid plates, limited-slip rear axle, 16-inch wheels with all-terrain tires and rugged vinyl floor covering

Interior
The Ranger interior is bare-bones basic, with few frills. Leather seating is available whether you get the 60/40-split bench seat or the bucket seats, and there’s an available Pioneer sound system with seven speakers (SuperCab only). The FX4 and Sport pay the most attention to style, with eye-catching gauges and a rugged appearance.

  • Rubber floor covering for Sport, FX4
  • All sound systems have audio input jack
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel for FX4

Under the Hood
There are two engine options for the Ranger.

  • 143-horsepower, 2.3-liter inline-four-cylinder engine with aluminum block and cylinder head, dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and 154 pounds-feet of torque
  • 207-hp, 4.0-liter V-6 with iron block and aluminum cylinder head, single overhead camshaft, two valves per cylinder and 238 pounds-feet of torque
  • Five-speed manual
  • Five-speed automatic

Safety
The Ranger offers several safety features, thought side-impact and side curtain airbags are not among them, nor is an electronic stability system.

  • Four-wheel antilock brakes
  • Driver and passenger airbags
  • Seat belts with front pretensioners
  • Anti-theft engine immobilizer

Of Interest to Truck Owners

  • SuperCab 4×4 maximum gross vehicle weight rating: 5,280 pounds (4.0-liter V-6 with payload package)
  • SuperCab maximum payload capacity: 1,660 pounds (V-6 with payload package)
  • Regular cab maximum towing capacity: 6,000 pounds (V-6 automatic)
  • Available axle ratio: 3.73:1, 3.55:1, 4.10:1
  • Minimum ground clearance: 7.9 inches (4×2), 8.0 inches (4×4)
  • Approach angle: 25.1 degrees (regular cab 4×4 SWB), 24.9 degrees (SuperCab 4×4)
  • Departure angle: 27.0 degrees (regular cab 4×4 SWB), 27.4 degrees (SuperCab 4×4)
  • Ramp breakover: 22.2 degrees (regular cab 4×4 SWB), 18.6 degrees (SuperCab 4×4)
  • Regular cab cargo-bed load height: 29.7 inches (SWB), 29.2 inches (LWB)
  • SuperCab cargo-bed load height: 29.5 inches (4×2), 31.9 inches (4×4)
  • Cargo floor length: 72.7 inches (SWB), 84.6 inches (LWB)
  • Cargo floor width: 54.4 inches
  • Cargo floor width at wheel well: 40.5 inches
  • Cargo bed depth: 16.5 inches

  • Owned my first Ranger for 20 years,370,000 miles w

My ranger was purchased used, it replaces my 97 Ranger which I owned for 20 yrs til it was totalled @ 370,000 miles. Only major component failure was rear end dif at approximately 200,000 miles and it still ran strong at time of wreck. Prompting me to set my sights on another Ranger to buy. My 2009 is 2.3l (as was my 97) w/auto trans (97 was manual), owned now for 2.5yrs I have to say I'm VERY surprised at the 09's performance which I expected to be a bit sluggish compared to my 97 as it was a reg cab and the 09 is supercab (which should weigh more?) but happy to report that I'm loving my 09 even more. This truck accelerates very well and seems to be cut from the same cloth as my 97 which was the most reliable ride I've owned and at age 60 I've owned more than a few. Before I reach my limit of 500 words, I'm a big fan of the Ranger: easy to maintain, fun driving, handles much like a sports car, looks great with a little customization, I could go on, but you get the idea!

  • Nice Work Truck and errand runner

I own the 2wd rear wheel ranger; that means it has no 4X4. Had this vehicle for 7 years, will load furniture and light loads. This truck is light and is Terrible for winter time! Use another vehicle or put winter tires on it and it will cost you some money. Another thing, check the bed before buying one mine is rusted and might not pass inspection. Reliability is amazing we have the 4 cylinder with the auto transmission. Interior is bland as of 2020, no cd player, aux or any future features. If your a labor worker boy you will get some bang for your buck. Please do not expect this thing to tow.

  • A Great Work Truck!

This truck met all of my needs when it came to going to school or towing and hauling bulky stuff for work. I loved that it had such low mileage and was kept well. It drove smooth for a smaller truck and I never had any mechanical issues with it.

  • Perfect light truck for commuting and weekend jobs

I bought my Ranger new in 2009 but it has less than 50k miles. I use it to commute occasionally and it is mainly the weekend workhorse for suburban living. It replaced an identical 1998 except that this one is an automatic V6 and it's predecessor had the 4 with a stick. I got rid of the 1998 at 140k miles with having only replaced the timing chain (in addition of course to the usual tires/battery, etc.) My 2009 has not had any problems other than the Takata airbag recall that I had done last week. In working with the dealer on this issue is was not one of their finest moments but my service rep ended up knowing what to do and how to make it right. While I like the new technology in the reborn 2019 Ranger, I am not so sure about the required 4 cylinder engine. Thought about getting a new one since I have had such a good experience with a total of almost 200k miles between the two trucks, but when I do I probably will switch brands in order to stick with a V6. However, at less than 50k miles the only thing I would be getting would be new infotainment technology; the working aspect of the my current truck is fully adequate and no less than a more current model year.

  • It?s a FORD!!!

I wanted a nice pickup that gets really good mileage! It?s a 2.3 4 cylinder 5 speed! Runs great! I?m 6?5 so it?s rather small, but all around a great little truck!

  • Solid truck, has served me well

I love this truck, I just don't use it much anymore. I am the original owner and it has hauled everything from mulch to furniture to lumber and has helped my two children with several moves.
