Expert 2007 GMC Sierra 2500 review

Our expert's take
Full article

If price is no object, the 2007 GMC Sierra Denali is probably the best pickup truck on the market. Comfort, utility, luxury, styling — I’m not sure it has ever been packaged this well.

If price is an object, well, it was nice knowing you, Denali.

Even so, when you think of how many masters this Sierra Denali Crew Cab is prepared to serve, the list price — $48,645, loaded — may not be that exorbitant. It can tow up to 8,500 pounds, carry five adults in leather-clad luxury, go most anywhere you want with its full-time all-wheel-drive so long as the trail isn’t too treacherous, and do it all safely: Standard equipment includes Stabilitrak stability control, anti-lock brakes, side air bags, rear parking assist, OnStar emergency-communications system, and that margin of safety that comes only with all-wheel-drive.

And you won’t be lacking in creature comforts. The test truck had a wonderful Bose stereo system, a rear-seat entertainment system, heated seats and steering wheel, a power sunroof and power adjustable pedals — clearly, there weren’t many option boxes on the order sheet that went unchecked.

Though any GM V-8 truck engine is more than adequate, the Sierra Denali has a big 6.2-liter, 403-horsepower V-8, mated to a perceptive six-speed automatic transmission. The all-wheel-drive system is transparent — there is no low-range gearing, and ground clearance is really too low to attempt serious off-roading, but the truck did come equipped with an underbelly skid-plate package.

Wheels are big chromed aluminum 20-inchers, which added a sobering $1,995 to the price tag, but they helped the taut suspension make this one of the best-handling big trucks I’ve driven. Steering is spot-on precise; brakes are strong and linear. The styling of the Sierra Denali, painted “Onyx Black,” was just this side of flashy. For a pickup, it drew plenty of admiring looks.

As good as the Sierra Denali is, it helps, of course, to start with a competent platform, and these GMC/Chevrolet full-sized trucks are nearly viceless. Add to that the commendably good build quality on this truck, which was assembled in Ontario, Canada.

If there’s a downside apart from the price, it’s the Denali’s expectedly grim fuel mileage: EPA rating is 13 miles per gallon city, 19 mpg on the highway, and the trip computer pegged our overall mileage at just less than 15 mpg.

If you can make do with less truck for substantially less money, you can work your way through the GMC Sierra lineup and get a pickup that might not have the Denali’s power and flash but still has plenty of muscle and lots of luxury features.

But if you want the ultimate — well, here it is. Financing is available.

  • Best full package pickup.

The Duramax will never be the monster engine that the Cummins is. But, when you take into consideration the whole pickup, neither ford or dodge can come close to it. The fuel delivery is the biggest problem i have with Duramax. The suction system instead of a pressurized one is not a good choice especially when the fuel is also needed for lubrication of the pump. A leak is hard to find and will cost thousands if not found. And they will never come close to touching the Allison transmission.

  • Best truck I ever owned

I bought this GMC Sierra 2500HD for camping. I got the extended cab so that I would have a 6 1/2 ft bed and not too long of wheel base. It is a great truck. Comfortable and pulls trailer great. Bucket seats and real console are great.

  • Do It All Vehicle

This pickup does everything. It's my baby and I'll never get rid of it. It's been a tow rig, a daily driver and a work pickup. I've raced it, off roaded it and taken it on cross country trips. It's a 3/4 ton but doesn't ride like it. It's comfortable and spacious. I can't say enough good things about the Duramax engine. With 200k on the odometer, it's barely broke in. Mines a little modified so it's making almost 500 horsepower at the motor and it'll fly. It has no problem pulling anything I hook to it either.

Plenty of power in the 6.0 liter, lots of room and easy access with the 4 doors and plenty of cargo space with the long bed. Very comfortable to drive without a lot of uneccessary bells and whistles.

  • Best Truck on the Market

I've owned two 2500 series trucks with the Duramax/Allison combo and I have never had 1 issue with either. I traded the first truck in with 70K miles and the trade-in price was incredible. These diesels hold their value, and I've heard nothing but positive experiences from friends who own similar rides. Can't say enough good things about this truck. GM hit this one out of the park.

  • Great Towing Truck

I purchased a used 2007 GMC Sierra 2500 HD - SLE specifically for towing a heavy (!5,000 lb) 36 ft fifth-wheel trailer. I could not be more pleased with this vehicle! The 6.6 L Duramax diesel/ Allison transmission combination is awsome, providing excellent towing characteristics on even 10 + percent mountain grades. The special towing setting with transmission-braking system is excellent, providing great down-hill speed control without the need to ride the brakes. Driving comfort is excellent & fuel consumption when towing is acceptable at 12.7 mpg, considering a TGVW of 25,000 lb. Outstanding American product! GMC can take pride in this extremely well engineered, well built machine. It definitely out-performs so-called competing products from Ford & Dodge. I pass them regularly, as they grind up mountain grades hauling much smaller trailers than mine.
