Expert 1999 Honda Accord review

Full article
our expert's take

The 1999 Honda Accord EX four-door has styling as bland as the Sonata’s, but it’s more than a step up mechanically. The 2.3-liter, 150-h.p. 4-cylinder is very lively, the 5-speed manual very smooth, the 25 m.p.g. city/31 m.p.g. highway mileage rating very attractive.

One major gripe: the seat bottom stops less than halfway down the thigh, which may be the design of choice for a bar stool, but not for a car seat that needs to provide long-distance comfort.

Too bad the seat was so skimpy, because ride and handling is most pleasant. The suspension system smooths road abrasions Sonata lets filter through.

Decent price: $20,900 that requires only a $415 freight charge to motor away with such standard equipment as variable-assist power steering; four-wheel disc brakes; anti-lock brakes; keyless entry; AM/FM/CD-player with six speakers; air conditioning with cabin micron air filter; cruise control; power locks/windows; trunk pass-through rear seat; power plug; body-colored power mirrors and side moldings; tinted glass; alloy wheels; 15-inch, all-season tires; and power moonroof.

Wonder why Accord vies with Camry for nation’s best-selling car? Look at the base price and the list of standard features, which defines value. Imports made their mark in the U.S. by keeping the standard equipment list long, the option list short, and Honda seems to be going back to its roots with this Accord.

  • I'd buy a Honda Accord again

I have a 1999 Honda Accord EX and it's a 4 cylinder. It's a very reliable car.Being able to fold down the back, seat to allow longer objects has been a useful option. We bought our Accord with 248,369 kilometers or miles on her.I now have 397,390.4kilometers.She's still going strong and regular maintenance is the key plus driving it on highways after being used for short distances.I'll buy a Honda again.A newer and one that has air conditioning.Honda Accord LX 4 cylinder is very econmical gas wise.

  • My 1999 V6 Honda Accord.

It has been a flawless car. Still runs like new cause I keep up maintenance and garage it! Car looks mint still and has only needed the basics after all this time! Just gave it a complete overhaul and paint. Should be good till I have to buy electric. Amazing car.

  • This isn’t on Honda but the dealers level of care

I think it was either flooded or the odometer was changed out. Or their mechanic used break clean or gas to flush the motor out and ruined the valve guide seals and the rest of the engine seals

  • A good car when new

It is a very good car when new, but as it ages (beyond 15 years of service) , the ball joints, drive shaft, power steering rack, tie-rods become unreliable. even failing whilst motion.

  • Smartest purchase ever

I bought this car (used) when I lived in northern Missouri, then I moved to Louisiana so it has been through all kinds of weather and always parked outside. I drive it for basic commute and roatrips. Only repairs I had to make were maintenance-related, not costly: only had to replace the catalytic converter because it was stolen. My car now has about 200,000 miles and runs GREAT. I expect it to last even longer. It is amazing!

  • Most Reliable Car I Owned

This was my first car given to me by my uncle. This car can last you easily another 100,000 miles or more due to it being a Honda. This car is perfect for a retiree or as a first car for your child as a reliable safe way for transportation.

The car kept going in conditions in which more expensive cars went to the side of the road to rest or wait it out. We particularly liked the sunroof.

  • Vary reliable and great community.

This car is awesome. It's very reliable and tough. If you thought a ford was tough then you haven't owned a Honda. This car is coming up on 300k and haven't had a single darn issue. It's absolutely amazing.
