Full article

What Is the 2024 Mazda CX-30?

The Mazda CX-30 is a subcompact five-seat SUV with a choice of two four-cylinder engines and standard all-wheel drive on all trims. The base powertrain is a 191-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission. For added verve, there’s an optional turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 227 hp when running on regular gas and 250 hp on premium; it’s paired with the same transmission.

Direct competitors include the Subaru Crosstrek, Hyundai Kona, Honda HR-V and Chevrolet Trailblazer. According to Cars.com’s cargo measurements, the CX-30 has 13.7 cubic feet of cargo space.

What’s New on the 2024 Mazda CX-30?

A Carbon Turbo trim joins the line, making the turbocharged engine available at a more affordable price. The Carbon Turbo also has unique features and trim, including exclusive Zircon Sand exterior paint, black exterior trim elements and terra-cotta-colored, leatherette-trimmed seats. All turbocharged versions of the CX-30 get a new 10.25-inch infotainment screen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, along with wireless phone charging. This screen functions as a touchscreen only when using these phone-mirroring systems.

What Features in the 2024 Mazda CX-30 Are Most Important?

Standard features include:

  • 16-inch alloy wheels
  • LED headlights and taillights
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Cloth upholstery
  • Wi-Fi hot spot (subscription required after data trial)
  • 8.8-inch multimedia screen
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity
  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control with stop and go capability
  • Lane departure steering assist
  • Automatic high-beam headlights

  • Heated front seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Navigation
  • Satellite radio
  • Bose premium stereo
  • 360-degree camera system
  • Blind spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert
  • Rear automatic braking

Should I Buy the 2024 Mazda CX-30?

When it comes to driving enjoyment, there aren’t many small SUVs that provide the same degree of fun you’ll get from the Mazda CX-30. Its agility and size make it easy to park, too. Downsides include poor rear visibility, a cozy second row and an infotainment system that eschews a proper touchscreen in favor of a quirky rotary knob controller on the center console. On the plus side, the quality of the cabin is excellent; it feels upscale. The CX-30 also has a sporty nature thanks to its highly accurate steering, strong brakes and taut suspension; the latter, though, might be a tad too firm for some SUV shoppers.

  • The turbo is remarkable feat of engineering.

The turbo is remarkable feat of engineering. 227 HP from regular unleaded and torque that leaps right from the get-go, maxing out by 2500 rpm. 29 MPG on a trip with 2 hours of highway and 1.5 of city stop & go. Add 93 Octane and you get 240 HP and change. Very responsive steering and suspension. The Premium Plus will spoil you rotten. THAT SAID ... the gas tank is tragically under-sized. Good luck getting to 300 miles even on a well-behaved week of driving. Though 2 gallons remain when the panic lights up on the dashboard, you won't know how much you've used of it thanks to zero=2 gal on the gauge. Also, at 1 of those is just used to keep the fuel pump cooled. We've wrestled for months now over whether it's even safe to drive around these parts with a measly 275 mile range.

  • I love my CX30.

I love my CX30. Only a few very minor complaints. The back seat is small. I would only recommend it for small children. Since i'm the only user, it doesn't really apply to me. The car overall is small, which makes it easier to maneuver and more fun to drive than larger CX models. I'm 6'3 tall and have no problem fitting in the driver's seat - plenty of head and leg room. The other complaint is the small gas tank (under 13 gallons). Even though, I don't regret buying my CX30. It's a lot of fun! I would definitely recommend not looking at any trim level lower than premium due to all the options the premium includes. I opted for the non-turbo. It's fast enough without it, and was 3K less.
