What Is the 2023 Mazda CX-9?

The Mazda CX-9 is a mid-size SUV with room for six or seven people onboard, depending on whether a second-row bench or dual captain’s chairs are ordered. Powering this three-row SUV is a 227-horsepower, turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel drive. While it’s far from being the newest face among a strong roster of rivals, the CX-9 still has much to offer compared with competitors such as the Ford Explorer, Honda PilotHyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride.

What’s New on the 2023 Mazda CX-9?

Mazda has dropped the entry-level Sport trim from the CX-9 range, making the most affordable model a CX-9 Touring that starts north of $40,000. Standard features now include dual second-row captain’s chairs, leather seats, wireless device charging and a sunroof.

What Features in the 2023 Mazda CX-9 Are Most Important?

Standard features include:

  • All-wheel drive
  • Second-row captain’s chairs
  • Automatic LED headlights
  • 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi hot spot (data subscription required after free trial)
  • Heated front seats
  • Tri-zone automatic climate control
  • Push-button start
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane keep assist
  • Blind spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert
  • Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability

Available features include:

  • 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Power liftgate
  • Power moonroof
  • Second-row retractable sunshades
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Heated second-row seats
  • Bose premium stereo
  • Navigation
  • 360-degree camera system

Should I Buy the 2023 Mazda CX-9?

If you want a three-row SUV that’s fun to drive, the 2023 Mazda CX-9 should be at the top of your shopping list. While it’s more expensive than some rivals, the CX-9 comes standard with many comfort and safety features that are optional on competing mid-size SUVs. Its third row, however, is best left for kids, and the optional 20-inch alloy wheels add a bit too much firmness to the ride over rough pavement.

A great handling, comfortable 3 row mid-size SUV

Despite this being the final year offered (the CX-90 will replace it soon) the CX-9 is still a looker. The 6 speed transmission shifts smoothly and the 2.5L turbo has plenty of power to move this 4200 pound AWD, SUV. Seats are very comfortable in both first and middle and I keep the third row folded down leaving a good sized cargo area for hauling groceries, 50lb bags of birdseed, softener salt and anything else I need to carry. And I absolutely love the way this thing handles! It feels far more like a nimble car than a 3 row SUV. The 12 speaker Bose sound system is clear and powerful. The cabin is very quiet at all speeds. The ride is firm but solid and comfortable. Not a squeak or rattle. I have the Carbon Edition and I feel it looks as fresh as any new three row mid-sized SUV out there. I traded my 2019 Ram Limited (an incredibly luxurious truck for the Mazda and I was concerned about adapting to a smaller vehicle but the CX-9 is everything I could have hoped for. I would recommend anyone who enjoys driving and has to occasionally carry some bulky stuff to consider one of these before they're gone.
