Best Sedan for 2019
October 31, 2018
Well, that's my opinion as a new owner of a 2019 BMW 540i with most of the options.
Handling is incredible. The ability of the rear wheels to turn slightly is very noticeable at low speed. This car tracks sharp turns better than any I've driven.
Now, if you purchase the "driving assistance plus" package, the car actually steers itself at speeds above 30 mph. This is spooky at first. You are driving along and suddenly the car jumps right or left into the lane. The first time I felt that, I thought "oh no" I have a flat tire.
It takes time to adjust to a car that thinks your steering out of a lane, but once you do (about a week or two), you'll love this feature. Currently you still have to keep your "fingers" on the steering wheel, but soon, that might be optional. Right now you can release the wheel for about 30 seconds before you get a complaint.
One fault. The trunk would not close fully. It's all electronic, and therein lies a problem. The sensors on the latch failed at about 200 miles. Fortunately it's under warranty and was easily fixed in a few hours at no cost.
This car has so many sensors and electronics, I would expect faults like this are likely. However, I would expect most occur under warranty, and in my opinion, the safety and comfort features provided by these new electronics are worth the cost and mechanical issues.
