  • only expensive for people with soft hands

  • Expen$ive to own!

Handles like no other car on the road. Had more alarms than all other cars on the road. You'd better invest in a car lift and tools.

  • Truly mixed bag

How I felt about this car depended entirely on my last visit to the shop. Incredibly expensive to keep on the road, example: $11800 for valve guides at 47,000 miles, and all servicing either on time or earlier. You can buy one for a song because of poor dependability and cost of repairs. But it was fun to drive - traded it for $2500 rather than sold because a diagnostic check would have revealed about $17,000 of suggested repairs. The luxury of a 4-year warranty and zero interest loan cannot be overstated.

  • Powerfull sedan

People always say that BMW's are so expensive to own. NOT TRUE. They are designed and engineered to last. Just the little things they do help you keep the car in great shape. I have had mine for over a year now and aside from oil changes I have spent ZERO dollars on it. It is a 2005 and it still runs great and the paint still looks great.

  • High maintenance and poor transmission.

The car is fun to drive when it's not at the repair shop. Problems start after 50k miles, transmission problems. My friend bought a similar car after seeing mine. He also had similar issues.

  • I have had mine since 2008

I brought this car in 2008 as a CPO vehicle. I have the sports and cold weather packages. Needless to say, I know a lot about this car. Most of what you are reading about the car is true, but I don't have a lot of the issues some people are having. My car is a 6 speed manual, so I don't have any transmission problems. I have a 125000 on the car, and still have the same clutch. Oil leaks. Yep. Sorry to say unavoidable. The repairs can get rather costly, but find a good mechanic you will be able to manage it. Bottom line. I can not find another car that performs anywhere close to my 545. Even the newer BMW's are the same or not as good in some cases, so why spend money for something I already have. I have thought about selling or trading it, but I simply can't do it. So if you are thinking buying this car, make sure oil leaks have been addressed. If you find one in good condition, you will not be disappointed with the performance. Isn't that the reason we drive BMW's anyway?

  • Great all around car.

This was a very well-rounded vehicle for me, ahead of it's time in terms of design, performance capabilities, and creature comforts. Though I wouldn't buy another one solely due to reliability issues ranging from faulty electrical systems to costly engine/drivetrain issues which were very difficult and expensive to resolve even for BMW mechanics.

  • GREAT sports sedan until around 100k

Awesome, Awesome driving vehicle when new - sell them around 75k or they'll reach 100k where I am and maintenance you to death - very, very expensive, and everything known to mankind is going wrong....recommended but up to limited mileage. It also does NOT retain its value, so be prepared for some major depreciation. Overall, loved the vehicle, but won't own another due to high expense

  • Horrible Car!!!

I bought my 2005 545i with 78k miles on it. BOTH the transmission and engine failed. I took it to the dealer, and they said that it could not be fixed! They had to order a new transmission and engine for the car! And of course this all happened when my warranty expired!! I was absolutely furious! It doesn't stop there... I changed the fan on the car 4 TIMES! And each time it cost me $470. I am VERY disappointed by BMW's Lack of responsibility and taking care of these problems. The dealer said that these were all recalls. But, on "Cars.com" it states that there are NO recalls! I even called a close personal friend of mine who works for BMW in Munich, and he told me with all honesty that BMW has never known how to build a proper V8 engine. Overall, I will never buy another BMW again!
