Along with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the BMW 7 Series has been setting the bar for full-size flagship luxury sedans for almost 50 years. Today’s powertrain lineup includes a powerful and smooth inline-six engine that’s rated more than 30 mpg on the highway, as well as a PHEV with 35 miles of electric range and a twin-turbocharged V-8 that flings this nearly 5,100-pound sedan from 0-60 mph in about four seconds. Whichever powertrain you choose, sumptuous luxury comes standard in the 7 Series, with nearly any indulgence you can imagine merely an option package away.

What’s New for 2026?

There are no major changes to the 7 Series for 2026. A revamped 7 Series lineup is arriving for 2027, incorporating BMW’s Neue Klasse styling and technology.

Pricing

BMW doesn’t structure its vehicle lineups around trim levels like most manufacturers do. Instead, it offers the 7 Series with three different powertrains that each come with largely the same standard equipment. Myriad stand-alone options and packages are available for each version, allowing buyers to spec this sedan to their liking. The following prices are correct as of June 2026 (manufacturers sometimes change a vehicle’s pricing over the course of a model year):

Trims and Features

As BMW’s flagship sedan, the 7 Series carries such a lengthy list of standard equipment that you might wonder what’s left for the options menu — until you look at the options menu. Standard safety technologies include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep steering assist, blind spot warning, automated parking, front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking, and automatic high beams. Every 7 Series rides on an air suspension with adaptive dampers and 20-inch wheels. Other exterior features include LED headlights, rain-sensing windshield wipers, soft-close doors, a panoramic moonroof, a power-operated trunk, remote start and keyless entry and start. The 7 Series’ interior is upholstered in synthetic leather upholstery and boasts power-adjustable front seats, heated seats front and rear, a heated steering wheel, four-zone automatic climate control, glass control knobs, ambient lighting and power rear-window shades. Cabin tech includes BMW’s Curved Display — which joins a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen into a single display — a head-up display, navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Bowers & Wilkins surround-sound system and wireless device charging. The 740i xDrive adds AWD but is otherwise identical to the RWD 740i. The 750e gains real leather and the PHEV powertrain, while the 760i adds rear-wheel steering, ventilated and massaging front seats, and heated armrests front and rear. Available on every 7 Series, the Premium Package includes a 360-degree parking camera and lane-centering steering. The Executive Package adds the same equipment, plus updated headlights, automatic doors and ventilated front seats.

Powertrains and Fuel Economy

The base 740i is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine with 375 horsepower and 398 pounds-feet of torque. In the plug-in 750e, that same engine is supplemented by an electric motor, generating a total output of 483 hp and 516 pounds-feet of torque. In the 760i, a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 provides 536 hp and 553 pounds-feet. All three engines are backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission. RWD is standard only in the 740i; BMW’s xDrive AWD is optional on the 740i and standard on the 750e and 760i.

Interior

The 7 Series’ spacious interior is a blank slate for buyers, who can choose from multiple colors, synthetic or real leather, and a host of lavish extras. Heated front and rear seats are standard, with ventilation and massage available for all. Heating is also optional for the front door panels, the center console and the underside of the dashboard. Other highlights from the 7 Series’ options list include reclining rear seats with integrated footrests, a 31-inch rear-seat entertainment display and an upgraded Bowers & Wilkins audio system with 40 speakers.

Versus the Competition

The 7 Series’ archrival is the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which has a significantly higher base price to go along with its more refined styling, classier interior, comfier seats and more available power: The outrageous AMG S 63 E Performance makes 791 hp, 1,055 pounds-feet of torque and has a claimed 0-60 time of three seconds flat. You could also choose to save a few grand and go with the Genesis G90. It can’t match the Germans’ available power, but the Korean brand’s flagship includes more standard comfort features, including Nappa leather upholstery and heated, ventilated and massaging front seats. Heated rear seats are also standard, with ventilated and massaging rear seats optional — like many of the luxuries available on the BMW and Mercedes.

Do We Like the BMW 7 Series?

The BMW 7 Series is an exemplary luxury sedan. Its engines are smooth, powerful and — in the case of the standard inline-six — surprisingly efficient. The PHEV 750e boasts an impressive electric range, and no matter its engine, the 7 Series boasts nimble handling for a vehicle so large. If their drivers can restrain themselves, these big BMWs will be a plush and serene place to pass the miles — or entire days.
