Expert 2013 Cadillac Escalade ESV review

our expert's take
Our expert's take

our expert's take

Vehicle Overview

Cadillac’s Escalade ESV offers more room for those who find the Escalade, a full-size SUV, just a bit too small. Its wheelbase is 14 inches longer than the full-size Escalade, and its total length exceeds the standard model by more than 20 inches. Third-row occupants benefit from increased legroom, and cargo capacity behind them nearly triples. With seating for up to eight, the ESV competes with other luxury SUVs such as the Lincoln Navigator L and Lexus LX 570.

As with the regular-wheelbase Escalade, the Escalade ESV gets a full complement of luxury features, including leather seats, plenty of exterior chrome and optional 22-inch wheels. It’s available with rear- or all-wheel drive.
New for 2013
There are no significant changes for 2013.
Exterior
Built on the same platform as the Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL, the Escalade ESV stretches more than 20 inches longer than the regular Escalade. Fourteen of those inches go to extending the wheelbase, which allows for larger rear doors unconstrained by wheel wells. Despite the bigger dimensions, curb weight increases by just 260 pounds for rear-wheel-drive models. Exterior features include:

  • Jeweled headlights
  • Cadillac’s now-familiar eggcrate grille
  • Rectangular taillights in back
  • Eighteen-inch wheels standard
  • Available Platinum Edition features LED headlamps and unique 22-inch wheels
  • Power liftgate standard

Interior
The ESV’s extended dimensions don’t yield significant gains for first- or second-row occupants, but third-row passengers gain nearly 10 inches of legroom. Cargo volume behind the third row increases from 16.9 cubic feet to 45.8 cubic feet. With the third-row seat removed and the second row folded forward, maximum cargo volume is 137.4 cubic feet — about 28 cubic feet more than the regular Escalade. Interior features include:

  • Optional DVD entertainment system includes a second 8-inch screen for third-row passengers
  • Standard leather interior, automatic climate control and power-operated front seats
  • Standard seating capacity is seven; available second-row bench expands capacity to eight
  • Available Platinum Edition features a heated steering wheel, heated and cooled cupholders, a leather-wrapped interior and a DVD entertainment system with two extra screens integrated in the back of the front head restraints

Under the Hood
The Escalade ESV uses the same engine as the regular Escalade: a 6.2-liter V-8 with 403 horsepower and 417 pounds-feet of torque. It works with a six-speed automatic transmission. Cadillac includes standard scheduled oil changes, tire rotations, replacement of engine and cabin air filters and multipoint vehicle inspections for four years or 50,000 miles. Mechanical features include:

  • 8,000 pounds (RWD) or 7,700 pounds (AWD) of towing capacity when properly equipped
  • Optional Magnetic Ride Control replaces mechanical shock absorbers with electronically controlled shocks that GM says react to the road more quickly
  • Available full-time all-wheel drive

Safety
Safety features include:

  • Standard four-wheel-disc antilock brakes
  • Standard electronic stability system with rollover-mitigation technology
  • Standard side curtain airbags in all three rows of seats
  • Standard front-seat side-impact airbags
  • Optional blind spot warning system

  • Love this suv

Very roomy, great tow capacity. My kids love that there are two drop down DVD players. Heated and cooled seats are so nice, along with heated steering wheel. One touch windows and sunroof...I could go and on about this vehicle. Very glad we purchased it. The only thing that’s taking some time to get adjusted to is the gas mileage. I fully expected to get less gas mileage than I did in my midsized suv compared to this tank. But obviously that’s what happens when you get a big suv with a big motor. But having all the extra space for my kids and cargo is worth it!

  • Nice RIde

We bought the 2014 Escalade ESV Premium 5 days ago. I really enjoy driving the vehicle it is smooth tight and sharp. My only negative is the engine power, however it does have power just not what I am use to. I know with the size/weight of this vehicle I was going to loose that zip of the Land Rover I traded in but the interior room for my growing family is awesome. The luxury in and out is beautiful. My only other negative is the console area that is wood grain over the cup holders seems to scratch easily. And I've only owed it 5 days! Anyway the Caddy is all in all an awesome vehicle which will suite my large family very well for years to come.

  • what an awesome vehichle

I have been looking at purchasing an ESV for over a year now and made my way to the Cadillac dealer in Temecula to determine if I could find the one I wanted. Black on Black Premium edition of course. Maricela was very informative and was able to locate the vehicle I was looking for. She made the entire experience enjoyable and worked hard to earn my business as I was looking to lease this vehicle at a certain price point. The finance team and Marisela made it happen and I could'nt be happier with this gorgeous vehicle. This ESV has class, styling, elegance and attitude and im the envy of my friends and neighbors. I broke it in by driving to Vegas of course!!! The Premium edition is just below the Platinum edition. The difference is no embroidered seats and two less dvd displays. The premium has 2 dvd screens and the platinum has four. The premium has all the trim and convenience packages as the platinum so i went with the premium.

  • Stylish go getter

I have owned many vehicles from a Tahoe to a crossover to a extended cab truck and nothing fits my large growing family better than this escalade ESV! It's so trendy and comfy and has more than enough rear space for your items from luggage to groceries. Some of my kids are in car seats and others are 6feet tall they all fit with the second row bench option. Hands down best power and style out there for a SUV however it's pricy.

Reliable with a sports engine. Nice for rough driving and speeding ha! dont forget tht! My next car will be Bugatti Supersport or Lambourghini Aventador. Idk I need to get what I can afford. Whateva! • Amazing car!

When we needed something a little bigger, we knew to go with GM. We decided it had to be between a Caddilac Esclade and Gmc Yukon XL Denali. We decided, the Caddilac ESV was the choice. Rides great, sounds great, looks great, and fits the whole family, plus the one on the way!
