  • Great truck

I bought my 99 dodge ram 2500 slot quad cab 4x4 diesel new and now have over 320,000 miles on it. I have done a lot to it over the years to make it more reliable than original. Most people don't and that's where all the negativity comes from. Start off by replacing all the weak points of the vehicle when the time comes to replace it, only replace with better parts and you won't be sorry. Here's my list: power chip from stock 230 hp up to 350hp and 700 plus torque. Before that upgrade transmission and torque converter to handle the power, not much more money than your stock transmission that came in the truck. Upgrade your exhaust to 5" and upgrade your pickup fuel pump to an AirDog fuel and water separator. The stock transmission and torque converter will never handle more power than what came with the vehicle. Bigger exhaust will let the truck breath easier with the added power. Power chip gave the truck the power it should have had in the first place. The Air Dog system has a lifetime warranty and will replace your stock pickup pump which was junk to begin with. I just replaced the Air Dog pump after it went out recently and the company replaced it for free. Was installed about 10 years ago, try that with your stock pickup pump from dodge. Also replaced the front axle with one from an 2001 dodge. Better calipers and brakes.

  • 5.9 cummins 24 valve. Easy to uprgade and modidy

Plenty of power and torque. Easy to work on for the DIY guys. Upgades are fairly simple to install and plenty of room under the hood to navigate.

  • first diesel

2500 4X4, quad cab, diesel. This trucks engine will go forever with proper fluid and filter changes. I am currently in the process of rebuilding the transmission as they tend to fail if left stock and can not handle much power above stock. another required upgrade is a new fuel system to properly supily fuel to the VP44 injection pump. it is lubricated by the fuel alone so any drop in pressure or excess water/air in the lines will cause premature failure. the axles and transfer case are solid but the rear end limited slip is a ratchet design and tends to fail after 200K miles or so. to this end i recommend installing a select able locker or for cheap you can remove the limited slip clutch plates and install spider gears converting it into an open diff for cheap. the calipers are single piston where as the 01+ models are dual piston. as its a 2500 it has very hard suspension but i intend to replace this with a thuren fabrication suspension system with variable compression coils to make a softer road ride. the engine bay does not have much extra room so installing any on engine equipment such as air compressors or welders is difficult but you can replace the alternator mount to give you just enough clearance to install a yourk ac compressor to drive air tools above it. these trucks will not get up and go from a stop like a gas will but they will pull your house down at idle... it is very common for these trucks to have issues shifting at highway speeds. mine locks and unlocks the torque converter rapidly between 40-50Mph causing lots of jerking and speratic RPM jumps. this was caused by the ground wire from the tourq converter being to close to the alternator and the EMI sending the wrong signals causing random locks. this is fixed by wrapping it in tin foil and moving it out of the way of the alternator. all in all i bought this as a project truck and it is running great for work. i love rams as they are so easy to work on and find parts for. also you can fit 35" tires on it with out any lift and a 2-3" lift can fit 37. if you have a wide tire then a rim with a -12mm off set or greater will give your control arms clearance room while at full steering lock.
