our expert's take

What Is the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning?

The 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning is a fully electrified version of America’s most popular pickup truck. Available with anywhere from 230 to 320 miles of range, the F-150 Lightning has seating for five and comes standard with all-wheel drive. Acceleration is surprisingly quick, and it’s accomplished in near silence.

There are two battery pack choices. The standard-range pack delivers 452 horsepower; the extended-range version ups that to 580 hp. The roomy cabin features a 12-inch Sync 4 infotainment system that has large graphics and is easy to use after only a few minutes of familiarization. While it’s an EV, this is still a big and heavy truck at heart; body roll and steering feel remain trucklike when driving with verve through corners.

What’s New on the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning?

The 2023 F-150 Lightning remains technically the same as the 2022 model year, yet a significant price jump means the most basic version of this electric pickup now costs approximately $58,000 — roughly $16,000 more than its original sticker price.

What Features in the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Are Most Important?

Standard features include:

  • 12-inch touchscreen
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Navigation
  • 5.5-foot cargo bed
  • 12-inch digital instrument cluster
  • Heated front seats
  • Vinyl seating surfaces
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Underbody skid plates
  • Locking rear differential
  • Blind spot warning
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Lane departure warning
  • Rear parking sensors

Available features include:

  • 15.5-inch touchscreen
  • Wireless device charging
  • Power-operated running boards
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Max Trailer Tow Package
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • 18-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system
  • Leather seating
  • 22-inch alloy wheels
  • Power-deployable running boards

Should I Buy the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning?

The Ford F-150 Lightning represents a seismic shift in the pickup truck market. While rivals are relatively scarce for the moment, competitors like the Rivian R1T and upcoming electric versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra will give the Lightning a run for its money — and while we’re speaking of money, the escalating price of the Lightning could make it a harder sell compared with the regular F-150 lineup. But for truck buyers who can adapt to the EV lifestyle (and who appreciate very quick acceleration), the Lightning is the complete package.

  • Dependable and Versatile

I recently had the pleasure of test driving, and I must say, it left quite an impression. As someone who values both reliability and versatility in a vehicle, this pickup exceeded my expectations in more ways than one.

  • Best truck ever

What an awesome truck. It will allow me to do everything I could do in my regular F150. It is a fun vehicle. No, I am not towing long distances often. It is Used for traveling 50-75 miles daily. I can also take out of town trips with it, no issues.

  • CRAZY GOOD

XLT. Starting with value, this won't truly be known until trade-in time. I have a bad back & find the seats very comfortable. Interior & dash have a little too much plastic. Fit & finish are very good. Frunk is great for small cargo. Power is beyond expectations, throttle down & there is no lag, really nice in the mountains. Ride is so smooth don't even know when doing 80+. All in all we are very happy with our new truck.

  • Performance, efficiency and pro power is great

This has been the best truck I have ever owned. It costs 12 to fill up and gets 250 miles, that an 80 mpg equipment. Imagine that in any other truck, unheard of. Ride is great, smooth and quiet, and tons of power, pickup is incredible. And then there is the features: we powered several event with the pro power, food trucks, music events, middle of nowhere camping adventures. And it bearly impacts the battery. This thing has been the coolest truck I've ever owned. No regrets.

  • You're nuts to buy this truck

This is by far the worst new vehicle I have ever owned. It is way over-priced for what is delivered and what is delivered is not always what the manufacturer claims. Firstly, we did not buy this truck for any of he reasons this survey offers as a choice. We bought it as a farm truck that could serve as a backup power supply in the event of a loss of grid power. If that is your intention, be prepared to spend an additional $20,000 for hardware and software for your home. Also, be prepared to spend additionally on subscriptions for basic needs of the truck that should be satisfied by your smartphone hotspot and is not. I can understand additional fees for subscriptions like satellite radio but not for basic features required for regular truck operations. Warning messages from the truck appear regularly about using hands-free operation. Yeah, right, try using voice commands that the truck understands. This is the dumbest voice command device I have ever encountered. Alexa or even her not-as-smart sister Siri run circles around this truck's voice command operated features. The almost entire software programming and interface are amateurish. When in simple not augmented cruise control there is an incessant warning to keep your hands on the wheel. My hands are always at 10 and 2 o'clock without fail. But the truck continues to alarm the driver to "keep hands on wheel." When warnings are incessantly inappropriate, we tend to start ignoring them and that is not good... that Is a problem. Range over 300 miles? Fagetta about it. Firstly, that is only on a 100% charge which can take hours to achieve even on a partially charged vehicle. And, you still will not get that kind of range unless you are within a rather narrow range of outside temperatures and on flat ground. And, put a trailer or fill up the truck's bed and watch the range of the vehicle take a major hit. This truck is Not ready for prime time. Actually, it's not ready for any time soon. I waited almost 3 years to finally get this truck and thought that that might not be so bad since Ford would correct any issues with a version 1 model. Sorry. It ain't happening. My Rivian brothers and sisters don't have anywhere near the problems with their vehicles. We have a Prius with almost 300,000 miles on it and have had 0 issues since mile 1. I wanted so much to love this truck and I could go on and on about its issues but my blood pressure is rising just reviewing about it. It's a disaster. In closing, we tried to sell this truck on Truck Trader when it had only a few hundred miles on it and at an over $10,000 loss. We never got one call on it. That should tell you all you need to know.
