Vehicle Overview
A Trailhead option package that dresses two-wheel-drive Rangers to look like 4x4s is the main addition for 2000 to the best-selling compact pickup.

The Trailhead Group, available only on 2WD Rangers, includes 16-inch all-terrain tires, five-spoke alloy wheels, higher ground clearance, fog lamps, and a grille, bumpers, front tow hooks and torsion-bar front suspension like those on 4WD Rangers. The package is aimed at buyers who covet the rugged look of off-road models but can’t afford the higher prices on 4x4s.

Bigger changes are due next fall on 2001 models. A sporty model called Edge will debut with new styling, and Ford will offer a tubular cargo bed extender that adds two feet to the rear. A two-piece hard tonneau cover with a lockable front compartment will be a new option.

Ford also will introduce a new four-cylinder engine during the 2001 model year, though it has not announced specifications, and horsepower on the current 4.0-liter V-6 will jump from 160 to 205.

Mazda sells versions of the Ranger as the B-Series pickups with minor styling and equipment differences. Ford owns a controlling interest in Mazda.

Exterior
Ranger comes in three sizes: A regular cab is available with 6- or 7-foot cargo beds, and the SuperCab extended-cab version comes with the 6-foot bed. Short-bed models are available with optional flared rear fenders, which Ford calls Flareside.

Two rear-hinged rear doors are optional on SuperCab models and require that the front doors be opened first. Rivals at Chevrolet, GMC, Nissan and Toyota already offer, or will by next year, crew-cab compact pickups with four conventional front-hinged doors. Ford, however, says it has no plans for a crew-cab Ranger. Instead, Ford says the Explorer Sport Trac, a sport utility vehicle with four doors and an open cargo bed, fills that role.

Interior
A three-place bench seat is standard on all Rangers, and front buckets are optional on XLT models. SuperCabs add a pair of rear jump seats. Unlike General Motors’ compact pickups, ordering the rear doors does not eliminate either jump seat. However, like the rear seats in all compact pickups, the ones in the Ranger are too small for adults to be comfortable.

Under the Hood
The standard engine for two-wheel-drive models is a 119-horsepower 2.5 liter four-cylinder, which will be replaced during 2001. A 3.0-liter V-6 with 150 horsepower is standard on 4WD models and optional on 2WDs. A 160-horsepower, 4.0-liter V-6 is optional on 2WD and 4WD models. All three engines are available with manual or automatic transmissions, and with the 4.0-liter engine the automatic is a five-speed instead of a four-speed.

The 3.0-liter V-6 can burn 100 percent gasoline or a gas/ethanol mixture up to 85 percent ethanol. The 4WD system can be engaged on the fly through a dashboard switch.

Ranger also is available as a battery-powered electric vehicle, though few retail buyers opt for this zero-emission vehicle.

Four-wheel antilock brakes are standard on XLT models. On the XL, a rear antilock system is standard and the four-wheel system is optional.

Performance
Ranger doesn’t blow away the competition in looks, performance or features but offers a well-designed, attractively priced lineup that attracts more buyers than any other compact pickup.

  • Got this car after my grandfather passed and I love it.

Got this car after my grandfather passed and I love it. Got it with just over 60k miles but he hadn't maintained it over the years so a lot of work had been done over the past couple months. Needed a new radio, gas tank, oil fill, back window, tires, had some electrical issues and rodent damage, etc. It runs great and I get a lot of compliments on the looks of the truck. I wish it was stick shift and had 4WD but it's easy to drive. I have the passenger seats in the back which my friends cram into and we all fit. Love this truck so much!!

  • 243, 800+ miles and does everything I need it to do.

243, 800+ miles and does everything I need it to do. Interior still excellent. Have done replacements and repairs as you would for any 24 year old vehicle. Shifter bushing needs replacing (today), first time ever. I ve taken very good care of it, no doubt, but would with any vehicle. Hope to keep it another 250k miles!! I m original owner, purchased May 2000!

  • Super reliable!

My 2000 Ranger (3.0 V6 2WD) has over 180k miles on it and still runs great. I replaced a full injector and the upper and lower ball joints, but that's it. Everything else has been maintenance (e.g., brakes, tires, spark plugs, shocks, hoses, etc.). If you find a 2000 Ranger in good shape with under 150k miles, buy it.

  • Replaced almost everything, but remains reliable.

Bought my 2000 Ford Ranger XLT 5 speed manual in 2003 for $3k from a co-worker and I've replaced just about everything but the engine, estimated $10k in parts, so far. But not bad for a 20 yr. old truck. At 230k miles today it rides good although the suspension probably needs replaced. Just a few exterior rust spots and ragged out interrior.

  • Best Truck EVER!

My Ford Ranger just turned 22 years old and has 205,000 MI. I bought the car on an impulse as my old vehicle which was a Saturn, the air conditioner had stopped working and I live in Florida and was driving home from work which was about a 40 minute commute and I simply couldn't take it anymore, and just pulled into a Ford dealership on my way home. I looked at the used vehicles and found this Ford Ranger that was white, and was a step side extended cab, that already had tinted windows and the bed liner and only had 24,000 miles. So I traded in my vehicle and drove home in my new truck. It has been so reliable and in all those 22 years all I've had to replace was a PCV valve, my lower ball joints, change the brakes and tires and a blower motor for the air conditioner. I think that's a pretty great record for vehicle and couldn't imagine my life without it.

  • This is the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned.

I've had this truck for over 20 years. No problems. I've only done the regular maintenance and had to swap out the radiator after 15 years and had to replace the alternator. If you can find a used Ranger in good condition with under 120,000 (and has had the camshaft synchronizer replaced if it has over 100,000 miles), it should prove to be a reliable vehichle. Mine has the 3.0 liter V6 with automatic trans. I understand that the new Rangers are also expected to be as reliable.

  • Very Good Little Truck

This is actually a 1997. I’ve also owed a 1999 Mazda B4000, which is actually the same truck. They are very good truck. Just the right size for an occasional haul. With normal factory recommended service, it can last a long time. They have been known to go 300,000 miles. I wish they still made these small trucks. The new Ranger is not as small.

  • Without a doubt, my 00 Ranger, she is reliable 💯!

Bought this Ford Ranger with 130k on it and a history as fleet truck 5#! She is just a plain Jane 2WD Auto XL. I put a rebuilt tranny in it because i got it for $1400 without a reverse. After nine years of being my only vehicle, going thru divorce, moving 5x etc..I only put brakes , new brake line, tires, spark plugs and filters... and reg.maint. so @ 130k My fly wheel cracked and i replaced it. & the starter. Also, all flushes , I put 110k on it, and never had she left me stranded, even when i was behind on money and went TOO long between maint. Intervals!!! My Engine is still strong and has much life left.!! Great all over all little runner!!! I love my truck...wont sell it no way for some new trucks hassles! True Blue for my pick/up😉
