What it is: The Sierra 1500 is GMC's entrant in the half-ton, full-size pickup truck segment. It’s a corporate cousin of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, sharing the same platform, engines, body styles and major mechanical features. The Sierra has different styling, particularly in front, and GMC positions its vehicles as more upscale than Chevrolet’s. Competitors include the Ford F-150, Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra.

Three cab styles — regular, extended and crew — and three engines are available for the Sierra 1500. All the engines are gas-powered: a 4.3-liter V-6, and 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V-8s. As with the Silverado, the Sierra is available in 2500HD and 3500HD heavy-duty versions that offer a turbo-diesel engine and higher payloads and towing capacities.

The base truck gains a standard 7-inch touchscreen radio and a backup camera. The tire pressure monitor now includes a tire-fill alert that monitors how much air is pumped into a tire.

Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD
The GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD heavy-duty pickup trucks are the true workhorses of the Sierra lineup and are designed for hauling heavy payloads and towing large trailers.

Changes for 2018 include a standard backup camera on all models with a cargo bed, a standard 7-inch touchscreen radio for the base model and a new grille for the Denali version.

What’s Special

  • Standard 360-horsepower, 6.0-liter V-8
  • Available 445-hp, turbo-diesel 6.6-liter V-8 with 910 pounds-feet of torque
  • Maximum towing capacity of 20,000 pounds with a conventional trailer hitch (3500HD with dual rear wheels)
  • Maximum fifth-wheel or gooseneck towing capacity of 23,300 pounds (3500HD with dual rear wheels)

  • At 100,000 miles eight lifters went out of my vehicle

At 100,000 miles eight lifters went out of my vehicle couple months later the water pump went out of my vehicle. I wonder when the other eight lifters will go out. The engine light goes on and off and I figured out it was a hood sensor that needs to be replaced after YouTube Internet figured out that’s why my alarm would go off periodically on the vehicle. I’ve reached out to General Motors and had no response to helping me with the issues just to relay me to an advisor who would help me fix it instead of compensating me for this year truck which is probably a lemon. I think this year’s model has some recall issues that they will not admit to. What is good about the GMC? Is it rides like a Cadillac. It is comfortable and the interior is very nice but all said and done. The engine needs to perform at least up to 200,000 miles before having any serious annd costly issues in this day and age. Specially, with the cost of how much they are. At 100,000 miles a truck like this should be barely broken in.

  • GMC makes garbage!

My GMC SIERRA 1500 w/ 5.3l V8 has been at the dealer for 5 months waiting on an engine due to lifter failure. Worst customer service ever. Don't by from GMC.

  • Avoid

Issue after issue. This truck is serviced religiously by GMC dealership we purchased from. AC went out in February, CV joints had to be replaced in July, computer system went out in August, transmission went out in October.

  • Transmission failure is very common

Transmission failure is very common. After 30+ emails and calls to Gmc they have responded with the same amount of emails and phone calls however there’s no resolution to my problem I keep getting pushed to someone that cannot make a decision in regards to the transmission failure that I am experiencing. I am reporting this transmission problem to the national transportation highway safety administration in Washington DC if you were having the same issue you should do the same

  • This is an attractive and enjoyable vehicle.

I traded my Chevrolet Silverado for this GM Certified GMC Sierra 1500. It is an attractive and enjoyable vehicle. Some years ago I had a GMC and really prefer them over a Chevrolet. This vehicle is just what I need for hauling and general driving.
