2023 GMC Sierra 1500 review: Our expert's take

What Is the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500?

The 2023 GMC Sierra is a full-size pickup truck that shares a platform and powertrains with its sibling, the Chevrolet Silverado. The Sierra is available with a standard turbocharged four-cylinder, two optional V-8s or a torque-rich turbo-diesel inline-six. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but the Sierra can be outfitted with a variety of four-wheel-drive systems and a number of features to boost towing capacity or all-terrain prowess. The Sierra is a hardworking truck at heart, but it can be turned into a veritable luxury vehicle in its range-topping Denali trims — just be prepared for some sticker shock if you scale the heights of this truck’s option sheet.

What’s New on the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500?

The big news for the 2023 model year is the addition of an off-road-themed AT4X AEV Edition. This includes adventure-related hardware like a front winch, additional underbody skid plates, front and rear steel bumpers, and black 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in chunky 33-inch all-terrain tires. GMC has also improved the horsepower and torque ratings of the optional Duramax turbo-diesel inline-six. Output for the diesel now comes in at 305 horsepower and 429 pounds-feet of torque.

What Features in the 2023 Sierra 1500 Are Most Important?

  • 17-inch steel wheels

Should I Buy the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500?

The GMC Sierra has an impressive roster of powertrains and features that take the fight to key rivals, especially the hugely popular Ford F-150 and Ram 1500. While it’s more expensive than the Silverado, the Sierra is equipped with higher-quality cabin trim and additional features to help justify the price premium. If you’re new to the full-size pickup truck market, however, you might be in for a rude awakening when you see how high the asking price of a Sierra can go in its top-of-the-line Denali Ultimate trim.

Very disappointed customer

I bought my 2023 gmc sierra truck a couple months brand new/used. I started having problems with the brakes. Took it to the dealership and they said there was nothing wrong with my brakes. I’m still dealing with that annoying noise on my brakes. A month ago my front dash screen went blank. Now today a new truck I can t drive my truck out of my driveway! I had no oil and it sounds like my truck motor is going to blow up. I had a couple months took my truck in the dealership to get my oil changed!!!! Then no oil !

Like the truck but also disappointed

Got the duramax diesel and getting 24 city and 32 highway is very good. Truck drives nice and is very comfortable. My 2 issues with this truck is the backup camera at night is useless (very dark) and interior lighting is not very good. You would have thought a 78k truck would have footwell lights, but it doesn’t.
