Expert 2019 Honda Civic Type R review

our expert's take

What Is the 2019 Honda Civic?

The Honda Civic is a front-drive compact car available in sedan, coupe and four-door hatchback body styles. It competes with the Hyundai Elantra, Nissan Sentra and Toyota Corolla. The sedan and coupe can be powered by a standard 158-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine or a 174-hp, turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder, while the regular hatchback comes only with the 1.5-liter engine.

For performance-minded drivers, Honda sells Si and Type R versions of the Civic. The Si model is available in sedan and coupe form and features a 205-hp version of the turbo 1.5-liter engine. The ultra-performance Type R comes only as a hatchback with four seats and is powered by a 306-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. A six-speed manual is the only transmission offered for the Si and Type R.

What’s New on the 2019 Honda Civic?

Subtle front and rear styling changes update the looks of the sedan and coupe. Inside, there’s better sound insulation, updated trim and the addition of a volume knob and hard keys for the available Display Audio touchscreen multimedia system. A new Sport trim level slots between the base LX and midlevel EX, and the Honda Sensing suite of active safety features is now standard. Honda Sensing includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist and automatic high-beam headlights. (Si and Type R models don’t get Honda Sensing).

What Features in the 2019 Honda Civic Are Most Important?

The Honda Sensing suite adds a lot of worthwhile active safety features to the Civic’s standard features list. Stepping up to the Sport trim brings the Display Audio touchscreen multimedia system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. Moving to the EX trim brings Honda’s useful LaneWatch system, which uses a camera in the passenger-side mirror to help you keep an eye on things on the right side of the car, like cyclists in a bike lane.

Should I Buy the 2019 Honda Civic?

Even lower trim levels of the Civic deliver an engaging driving experience, and the high-output Type R ratchets the driving fun up considerably. It’s worth looking at the turbo 1.5-liter engine over the base 2.0-liter because it offers better performance and gas mileage.

  • Compliant on roads, fun on road course

Car is surprisingly compliant, I’ve had a few big Audis and vws with low profile tires and this car is really comfortable in comfort mode, took it immediately to a private event at Palmer a few weeks back and the car in stock form did fabulously, definitely lives up to the hype.... and then some. Only downside so far is the lack of options for tires since this car has odd-sized tires, non oem wheels are out of the question, the car has zero torque steer, aftermarket wheels would make all the magic go away. Also, 30mpg is a big plus. I traded my 2011 Range Rover sport for this and honestly the Honda rides better. Leaving the car stock will be the main goal, the car to my eyes is absolutely perfect and livable for daily duties. One thing I’ve noticed lately is that the car has not stopped from appreciating. Future classic is an understatement.

  • rebuild due to valve damage after four months .

Great other than having to rebuild my engine after 4 months of ownership due to a bent valve due to over rev the ecu said but it didn’t even log what rpm it over rev at so I don’t see how that could work even when I haven’t miss shifted it but south point Honda in Oklahoma won’t cover the damage done to my engine even when I took it in soon as the light came on when I filled it up so I kind of find it bullcrap that this happened when I paid $40,000 for a vehicle that was supposed to be reliable but I kind of find that funny when it there top of the line vehicle and it’s so this not even 4 months it to owning the car that it engine did this. I would buy it if you can find one that isn’t a defect . The way I got it fixed and guess what not even 2 months later the same lights just came on.

  • Great looking car and fun to drive

Just bought this car a few days ago and still love it. Unfortunately the weather took a turn for cold weather and I am unable to drive it due to the summer tires. I do plan on getting all season tires put on it which would make a world of difference to be able to drive it 12 months of the year in Illinois. I can’t actually vouch for the reliability but it’s a Honda so I’m assuming it’s very reliable.

  • I went from my 05 Prius to this...

After I drove it around for an hour or so to get my shifting swagger of my pre-Prius days (15 years ago!!), I gunned it and holiee shiiiiiiiiiiii. I felt like a criminal. I'm mostly a well mannered gentleman but at that moment I must tell you that it feels good to be a gangster. A few of my buddies are rolling new 911s now and I thought for the longest time....actually every night on YouTube....about possibly getting one. Well, after receiving this Type R yesterday, I'm glad that I spent a third of the money to get enough of the fun with this. It's good enough for a guy that prefers to stay in his nice sofa than some cold hard jail cell. I don't wanna be put in the slammer. I got two kids. This, my friends, will do the trick for you too. Live a little, you know.

  • Japanese engineering masterpiece, made in England

Base Civic has been the best car to learn driving for decades. It starts out with good bones. But, no enthusiasts would talk about front-wheel drive sports car, an oxymoron, until Type R changed everything. The Honda shift, Brembo brakes, Honda engine, suspension tuning, name it. The suspension comes with comfort, sports and R+. Cars are full of compromises. Yet, it is practical, and does everything at the same time at such an amazing capability. It is a bargain, and you get a masterpiece to drive around. Pushing the FWD car to the limit used to be nothing but ugly. I think both Honda and VW (Golf GTI) should receive a special award. There are few downsides, though. While twenty inch wheel is great for driving experience on a good road, when the road becomes full of potholes, which is rather normal in New England, it may cost you north of $500, for just one pothole. The manufacturer removed spare tire AND the scissor jack! Towing industry must have bribed politicians. Removing spares should be illegal. People who are comfortable driving without spare should just unload their spare and the jack. Do not force us to follow the crazy practice. Leave us alone.

  • I Still Dont know how I feel....

Best all around Bang for your buck "IF!!!!" you can find it for Sticker price I had to go to 17 dealerships to finally have one sell me one at sticker price. It is amazing car. TIRES: Current Stock tires tend to scramble for traction more times than I would like but sticker ties should fix that. RIMS: These 20" rims... this is a surprisingly comfortable ride, but allow Jesus on your side if you hit a pot hole, to bless your rims for another ride. TRANSMISSION: Seems to have an issue with downshifting which seems to be a known issue by most TYPE R owners. The shifter will not go into 4th, 3rd or 1st easily occasionally has been my issue. This is very annoying when it happens especially since its a brand new car but no where near a deal break at this point in ownership. COMFORT:Seats are next level comfortable, OMG car is almost worth just the seats on long trips short trips, sometimes I just want to hope in the car just to relax. PERFORMANCE: Is not...whats the word.... Fun. What I mean by that is, i've driven EVO 8, Silva, Intera, Miata, Prelude, RX-7, Skyline, RX-8, and WRX STI, and the Honda Civic is a better performing car than all of these vehicles, however all of these other vehicle FEEL more fun to drive because of the way the Type R delivers its performance. Its calm, collected, third gear will launch you from 30-->80mph in like 3-4 seconds and you have no idea you are retardedly beyond the speed limit until you hit the breaks and then the speed becomes apparent. Around turns it just grips and takes you through the turn. No drama, no excitement, no fun, just surgically, expertly, confidently a driving professional. This may be an awful description but I really hope it helps someone out! CLEANING: If you are doing it by hand there are so many nooks and crannies on the exterior it is quite the endeavor. Also the alcantara/suede/ whatever it is seats grab particles and hair like nobodies business. Overall the worst part about this vehicle is having to deal with the Honda dealerships.

  • Amazing to Drive.

This car is so responsive it amazes me every time I drive it. It’s the fastest 4 cylinder front wheel drive there is. 306 HP. Great on gas, comfortable, plenty of leg room and room for groceries and a car seat if needed. I love it!

  • The best daily driver I’ve ever owned!

This car is great! Behind the boy-racer styling is a truly satisfying experience behind the wheel! Plenty fast enough, and looks great, plenty of room for the 4 passengers and luggage room! The fwd system is amazing, no dramatic torque steer pulling you off the street. I’m extremely happy with my purchase I’m into 6 months of ownership and can’t wait to take the car to a road course!

  • Most fun car I've ever owned

This is, hands down, the most fun car I've ever owned. It is great for road trips (four door hatchback), it has plenty of room for the extra passengers and their luggage and can still make the trip exciting, or comfortable - your choice! Don't bother test driving, just buy this car.

  • I look forward to driving it every day

Of all the cars I have purchased in my lifetime, the Honda Civic Type R stands out as my most satisfying purchase. I’ve owned high performance Audi’s & Subaru’s, and had more run of the mill Nissan, Chevrolet, Volvo and Acura products in my driveway as well. I also have had the opportunity to drive a 2006 Corvette extensively. While all of these cars had their pros and cons, none of them put it all together to meet my needs quite like the Type R. It’s fast and exciting to drive, with an amazing amount of power coming from the 2.0 liter turbo 4 cylinder engine. It accelerates, handles, shifts and brakes like a sports car, but has the practicality of a typical hatchback, and offers selectable driving modes to accommodate your needs at the time. If you want a compliant cruiser, select “comfort” mode do it, but in sport or R+ mode, the Type R can light up a windy road like few other cars. The styling is a bit over the top and a touch juvenile, but I love it. As for the interior, the seats are amazing and the steering wheel, pedals, clutch feel, shift lever, instrumentation, etc. are all designed to make you a better driver. The Type R isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you want a relatively practical car that is an absolute blast to drive, check it out.

  • Awesome car! Smile generator!!!

The Civic Type R brings the usefulness of a hatchback and performance of a sports car all in one awesome package. The styling may not be for everyone but the fact that it is all useful to the balance and performance of the car makes it worth it. My only knock would be the faux vents shoood have been opened up to aid in engine cooling since when it’s on the track engine temps can be an issue. Everything else is superb. If you get it you will not be disappointed
